I bought this game and its sequel during a GB RPG shopping spree a short while back, but they've been languishing in my backlog ever since. After hearing how good they are, I'll have to prioritize getting around to playing them. Btw, there's a typo in your title. It's supposed to be Raikuban (well technically, Raikubaan, or Raikuburn if you wanted to take some stylistic liberties).
Yea you definitely need to. As you mention it, I originally wrote this as Raiboukan , which is even more wrong (you can spot the botched edit if you examine the title card carefully!) I’m never 100% happy with Romaji transliterations, they often aren’t quite right. I’ve even seen it like Raikōban before now.
What a fun game, this one. There are some really good early SRPGs on retro systems, such as Just Breed on the Famicom or this game. Too bad most of them didn't sell that well and ended up being fairly obscure as a result. IIRC someone's been working on translating the 2nd game, but I don't know how far along they are.
I despise whatever idiot decided to cancel the North American release of this. This type of SRPG was something Nintendo systems were badly lacking in North America and since this lacks permadeath it would make a much better introduction to this type of game then any of the pre-Awakening Fire Emblem games IMO.
100%! The prevailing theory in the early Nineties was that Western folks just wouldn’t ‘get it’ or some nonsense like that. It’s a bit mad to think that these days but it seemed to be the attitude back then. Maddening.
@@PortablePowerPodcast That was one area where Sega was smarter then Nintendo because they rather then writing the concept off actually brought many of their games like this west. And really there was no logical reason for Nintendo to assume the concept would fail because there were many popular western PC RPGs that used battle systems that had similarities to turn based SRPG systems.
