  • A ball bearing can #float on the #mercury. Also ‪@theCodyReeder‬ has a lot more videos on this and similar topics. #density #Hg #demonstration #science # #elements

My father worked in an engineering shop that made bearing races for lighthouse tops. In some light houses theglass screen floated on a 'bearing' of mercury

Codyslab has a great video of a full size anvil floating in mercury.
And showing that mercury while dangerous, isn't as bad as its made out to be. Like submerging his entire arm in mercury or holding some in his mouth and then later getting a heavy metal test done at a doctors office and having it come back as clean/safe

The lenses in lighthouses used to be floated on mercury, so that they could be spun around the lamp friction free.

You know what they say about deep fryers, the closer you get to the hot oil the safer you are? Yeah. Don't drop the bearing from six inches up. Drop it from two inches up, and it won't splash on you.

I wish I had that much mercury, I'd love to use it as a anode to collect all kinds of reactive metals by electrolysizing different exotic salts...

Yes, organic mercury compounds will end you in a gruesome way. Elemental mercury is less toxic by comparison.

I came for the glasses, learning what you're trying to teach subconsciously I'm sure. Osmosis.

How are you prepared for when that glass breaks and all that mercury goes all over the place? Is your table like a pool table and we just can't see the pockets for collecting the spilled Mercury?
You're not dropping a stirbar into a flask, that causes enough breakage often enough , no... you got to be dropping steel balls into something heavier than lead!!
Is that what happened to the other half of the mercury?

Elemental mercury in small amounts isn’t really an issue. You could swallow a bit and be mostly fine. It’s when it’s bound to other atoms to form a compound your body can absorb that makes it so dangerous (di ethyl mercury)
