The LAAT has too many weapons system, it's a weapon of intensive war and is not adapted to the new low intensity conflict the empire was fighting. The empire went back to some of the heavyily armed weapons of the clone wars during the galactic civil war. They get better weaponry between ANH and RoS, and you can even see the result of a new war doctrine in the weapons introduced by the Mandalorian. But the LAAT was overkill for the time. It had as you said four mini death stars.

It take Empire some time to redevelop TIE in line comparable to Rebels. But due to resource shortages, it didn't happen until after the Endor. I think there's more to it than that... sweeping away the droids and clones of the war to train ordinary recruits as military personnel was as much about instilling military levels of obedience into the existing population as it was about creating an effective fighting force- so conscripting civilians into the new stormtrooper corps was a key part of asserting the dominance of the newly formed empire

Also, other sites have pointed out that the galaxy was terrified of Droid rebellions. Droids in Star Wars are fully sentient and given programming restrictions to limit their scope, but these restrictions break down when there is a " contradiction" between their restrictions and the best way of achieving their orders.
A war between droids was recognized as a case where droids would break their programming and go rogue.
I can't remember the exact reasons for this in detail, but it has something to do with the conflicts between following orders, minimizing casualties, winning the war, and winning the war quickly. With droids on both sides, the tactics on both sides will change in such a way that the droids can break their programming and turn on their masters.

    • @chrishakala528
      @chrishakala528 3 роки тому +4

@@brianj.841 Yes, anti-droid bigotry is actually common in the Star Wars Galaxy with thousands of years of history behind it.
There were numerous droid rebellions, rogue assassin droid factions, and cases where people were irritated over losing their jobs to droids; and of course there is also the irrational bigotry too.
Organizations like the Pias Dias and the Empire also built up the sentiment to fuel their public support--and this is one of many reasons why the Empire rarely used battle droids.
Anyway, droid manufacturers put many programming restrictions on their droids to prevent uprisings and rogue behavior, and it often failed.
In some cases like the IG88 series and the HK series, the droids killed their makers and tried to take over the galaxy or rule from the shadows on numerous occasions. One Republic droid. ended up forming a criminal empire to fuel the Republic economy following the Mandolorian and Sith Wars,
One of the IG88 models successfully hacked the second death star, but failed to take full control of the station--Instead it just messed with automated doors to annoy Palpatine.

About the LAAT, it was retired because it was an intensive war vehicle, used for a specific type of warfare. It would not be needed for at least 15 to 20 years after the end of the clone war. It must be really expensive to use and maintain in fighting condition as it is really full of complex weapon systems. The best example I have are the LCVP landers used during WW2 during D-day and many amphibious battles. They were introduced in 1941 and were barely used after the end of the war except by the french during the late forties. This weapon was designed for a specific war and not suitable for the era to follow. I know the LAAT was cool but it doesn't seem it fits the post war Empire new doctrine. It would have been expensive and impratical to keep in the docks for a hypothetical high intensity war in 20 years. Also it always striked me as a troop transport or deployment platform for smaller vehicles but it doesn't seem to have the same cargo carrying ability of the imperial shuttle. The empire didn't need expensive hyper armed ships, they had their Star destroyer doing all the heavy lifting on the propaganda and heavy weapon front.

@@arthurbriand2175 Yeah ISD's don't have the same hangar space as Republic had with Venators. So they had to choose between keeping fighter squadrons or keeping assault transports.
Venators are also capable of planet landings which ISD lacked and needed most. Because later in the civil war they couldn't deploy troops as quick and much as they needed to be.
"the same cargo carrying ability of the imperial shuttle" ISD pretty much covers that also.
LAAT provides air superiority as well which Empire didn't need up until Civil War so hypothetically it was a right decision to phase out LAAT.
LAAT can carry AT-RT or LAAT/c can deploy AT-TE to the front speaking of which AT-TE was also retired in favor of AT-AT but we don't know either LAAT or AT-TE retired first. But they complete each other.
So LAAT/c incapable of carrying AT-AT thus making it obsolete. So they came up with Y-85 Titan dropship which does exactly what LAAT did while carrying 4 AT-ST (AT-RT replacement) and 4 AT-AT (AT-TE replacement) to the planet. As well as Y-45 armored transport hauler but both were slow and vulnerable compared to LAAT.
Again LAAT is for mobile warfare blitzkrieg tactics and Imperial crafts are about establishing fear, terror, doing propoganda as well as enforcing order. ISD is about sustaining for longer periods of time without resupply, securing routes and planets. So I doubt they ever considered quick and mass deployment.

    • @berryhops
      @berryhops 3 роки тому +14

I know that a lot of designs are usually cut for budget (logic wise) but whenever I hear something that got decommissioned due to extensive costs, they built 2 death stars. Since both death stars weren't that big compared to a planet/moon, I'm pretty sure they could've kept them, the only reason anything gets decommissioned is because
      A) It resembles something/someone we(the Empire/Emperor) don't like
      B) Doesn't fit the doctrine
      C) Empire like big stuff not small stuff
Another thing, clone troopers are still very much so more deadly than stormtroopers, but the Empire preferred icon over efficiency.
And yes I know I typed earlier that if they can build 2 death stars, they probably have enough money, but they may have been trying to save as much as possible to get the death star built as fast as possible (I'm not sure if the second the Empire was founded, that the emperor was planning for the death star, but this is what I would say is the most lore-logic reason I can think off.)

    • @radec1906
      @radec1906 3 роки тому +8

@@berryhops We recently learnt that inhibitor chips reduce the efficiency, proficiency or whatever the clones have. And as much as we know that order 66 is a permanent effect.
I think that is mainly because a good portion of the clones would object or rather regret their decisions and could possibly desert the G.A.R. afterwards.
We probably are about to see many such occasions with the new clones to be introduced in the next episode.
Probably each time Rex removes an inhibitor chip those clones will never be able to serve the Empire again. Be it sorrow, be it regret, be it feeling empty whatever you name it.
So phasing out clones is a much better idea whose loyalty lies either in Kamino or in Republic or in both but not in Palpatine of course without inhibitor chips. Even then with inhibitor chips, I am pretty sure that Kaminoans did not leave it to the chance and placed an emergency override to guarantee themselves by making clones only loyal to them in case anyone would try to make clones turn against their very own creators. One thing we know is that they love cash but do not trust Palpatine, not even a bit.
Correct me if I am wrong but If I am not mistaken, 99% of the workforce for the deathstars came from Geonosians. They exterminated the entire population, probably worked to death. So little to no money, no witnesses. Geonosis population = 100 billion in case you want to know how quickly they can build Death Stars without any payment.

Moving at incredible speed, manouvering silently throught countless droids, dropping it's payload of arcs then goes to stop an entire army of droids from ever reaching the destroyed acclamator. The arcs by now struggling, no losing to Grevious gets the laat to come and cover while they extract the three jedi, putting two jedi on lifesupport and making it's way out of the area by detonating explosives it had dropped earlier. Untouched and with three jedi and countless destroyed droids it takes off.

7:34 I don't think having a hyperdrive makes for a net improvement alone tbh. The Empire's fleet philosophy has ISD's and frigates tied to planetary defense. TIEs are meant to be carrier bound inherently, so every single ship having a hyperdrive is a waste of resources. I think to supplement this, squadrons of TIE defenders should be used as patrol craft, sort of like the New Republic has with it's X wing units. That way you could allocate fleets to more essential locations as well as have competent pilots in powerful craft readily available if another system falls under assault. Rather than having a fleet make time to mobilize. 7:55 I think the Empire having battle droids would not be terrible from a military standpoint, but from a societal standpoint. The whole illusion of the imperial military industrial complex is of unity. Citizens are meant to feel like they are apart of a huge cog that keeps the galaxy going, and having them in their armed forces would sell that, sort of how we worship our troops in the U.S. Having droids used in main military business would seem like the CIS of the CW, and as we know there are many who are stigmatized against droids as a result of that war, with a lot of people like Din Jarin having similar experiences with them during the height of their occupation. There are already droids utilized in their military to some degree though, like the KX series, and DT series.

Good point. THE DAY AFTER EMPIRE DAY - The Emperor sat behind his pristine desk and looked out beyond the restored glass of his luxury office at cityscape beyond. His Private Secretary Riyo Chuchi walked in with the Imperial Permanent Cabinet Secretary Grand Moff Tarkin.
"Ah Tarkin, it's a good day for the Empire."
"Oh indeed your Majesty. Your premiership has been a great success."
"And I've been asking myself, What can I do to continue this run of success?"
"Have you considered: masterly inactivity my Lord?"
"No Tarkin. An Emperor must be firm!"
"Indeed. How about masterly inactivity?" Tarkin opined.
"You haven't told him the good idea have you Riyo?" said the Emperor.
"No my Lord. I didn't want to spoil it," she replied.
"Good. Tarkin, I have decided in one fell swoop to restructure our galactic defence policy and usher in a new era of prosperity for the galaxy. We will scrap the Death Star project and use the money to fund a galaxy wide system of Academies. Especially in the Outer Rim. We will raise an army of conscripted officers to command our clone forces and solve our unemployment, security and defence problems in one go. Well what do you think?"
Tarkin was stunned. "Where did you get this idea your Majesty! So...so you intend to purchase Interdictors instead?"
"Oh no, we've got plenty of Star Destroyers already and an entire army!"
"But your Majesty, Star Destroyers are a ramshackle design! With the Death Star, we could obliterate entire systems - the whole Outer Rim for instance!"
"I have no intention of obliterating entire systems in the Outer Rim Tarkin! I wanted to rule the galaxy, not destroy it."
"But it's a deterrent against the old CIS worlds, the Hutts et cetera..."
"Come now Tarkin, it's a bluff. And they probably know that I wouldn't use it."
"Yes but even though they probably certainly know that you probably wouldn't, they don't certainly know that although you probably wouldn't, there is no probability that you certainly would!"
The Emperor was facepalming in confusion. "You've lost me Tarkin."
"My Emperor, it's so much simpler to push a button! If you walked into the Galactic weapon's showroom, you would buy the Death Star. It's round, elegant, as beautiful as the moons of Naboo. It is quite simply the best and surely your Galactic Empire should have the best! It is the Alderaanian suit, the Coreillian ale, the Naboo starship, Twilek female. It is the weapon that the Coruscant Opera House would sell you! What more can I say?"
"And it would cost the Empire over 15 trillion credits to buy Tarkin!"
"Well, you could say that about anything at the Coruscant Opera House!"
Suddenly, the holo projector activated. "Your Majesty, Lord Vader is requesting to speak to you."
"We will discuss this matter again later Tarkin. That will be all."
Tarkin strolled outside. As Riyo exited the room, he motioned to her.
"Riyo, what is the purpose of the Imperial Defence policy?"
"Well, to defend the Empire surely Grand Moff."
"No Riyo. It is to make the people believe the Galactic Empire is defended."
      "From the Separatist holdouts?"
"No not the Separatists. The Separatists know it is not. Projection is everything Riyo. Take the Star Destroyer. When the enemy sees it, they do not think practically how to take it on having been stunned by its sheer size. The Death Star will take us to the next level."
"But isn't the Emperor right? And besides it would create tens of millions of jobs. Spread out our forces to the Outer Rim."
"No one wants to go to the Outer Rim Riyo! You can't expect officers to go to the parched Dunes of Tatooine. There's nothing to do in the Outer Rim! The officers wouldn't wear it."
      "But he's the Emperor!"
"Indeed he is Riyo. He has his own shuttle, a luxurious palace on Coruscant, a place on Ryloth, another chateau on Naboo, endless publicity and a pension for life. No Jedi to challenge him. What more does he want?"
"I think he wants to govern the galaxy."
      "Well stop him Riyo!"
Tarkin went immediately to Admiral Yularen.
"The Outer Rim? Galactic garrisons? You must stop him Tarkin! This has Vader written all over it. Common sense instead of doing what's easy. It's the thin end of the wedge. Army regiments all over the place? Next they'll be wanting Admirals on ships all over the place. Much simpler to just have one button." Yularen had just spent his last few years in the throng of the Clone Wars. He had been looking forward to banquets and the high life of the Core Worlds in his final years of service. Then perhaps retiring and serving on the Board of a galactic corporation where he and his family could enjoy the galactic tropics.
"You know, I've been thinking. We ought to play the man, and not the ball."
      "What do you mean?"
"Well, convince the Emperor that Lord Vader is plotting against him. After all, he only just defeated the Jedi coup."
"But even with Vader's popularity in the army, surely only someone in an advanced state of paranoia would suspect Vader of plotting against him..."
"Think about it. He goes around the galaxy. Puts down insurrections. A man of the people. Whilst the Emperor sits in an ivory tower here in the capital. If the Emperor thought he was readying a leadership challenge, trying to succeed him earlier than intended..."
      "Ah. Man overboard."
Tarkin smiled. He pressed his communicator. "Get me the Chief Whip. Mas Amedda."

Should have kept the C70 charger and used it as a multi role ship. It had a decent hyper-drive as well and sub-light engines, plenty of lasers and two concussion missile launchers to fight off star-fighters. The "Salon pod" was designed to be easily removable and they could have manufactured different "pods" to fit different roles: proton torpedo launcher for use against capital ships (think PT boats), advanced sensor suite (AWACS), rapid troop insertion pod, or even a close air support craft for troops (C-130 gunship). Maybe even add a few hard points to add on either a turbo laser or ion canon to help beef up it's anti-capital ship role. Would have made a great ship to hunt down rebel capital ships in wolf packs, a capable interdictor against pirates, or a great long range recon ship. It was a great design that was retired too early. If the rebels had been smart they would have used them for the roles I just described.

yes i know they were effective however there might be a more competent droid at the same price point or a little more. like a mix between commando droid and b1 cause if you had a droid that kills better and is harder to destroy then you can afford to have slightly lower numbers since you wont lose as many as with the b1@@lukas_ls

    • @lukas_ls
      @lukas_ls 11 місяців тому

@@danielmatthiesen1717 that doesn't exists. b1 are so bad because they're as cheap as possible. Even though there aren't any concrete numbers, we know quiet a bit about costs. A full B1 with it's blaster is much cheaper than even just the guns the GAR used.
The GAR had ridiculously overpowered guns that were more like cannons than regular blasters. Even B2 droids went down with single hits. The only droid that was able to withstand that kind of firepower were Droidikas.
The B1 were so cheap, that for the cost of a single living soldier you could have deployed 100-1000 B1 Droids (when you factor in logistics, it's probably even more).
As a comparison: in the battle of Naboo (TPM) we saw about 1400 B1 Droids. The whole army was hardly more expensive than a squad of clones.
And that's why B1 Droids are so brilliant: they're deployed more like suppressive machine gun fire. Most won't ever kill anything but they can easily suppress and overrun the enemy. No living soldier can hold that for extended periods of time.

If the empire were to use battle droids the populace would only see the separatist droids and would revolt. Anti droid sentiment after the clone wars is very well documented. Even in A New Hope the cantina staff told R2 and 3PO that “we don’t serve your kind here.” Replacing the infantry sure was one of the toughest, biggest problems in the early years of the empire. Clones may have been better quality troops, but they were simply too expensive to field in such mass numbers to occupy all the needed territory. The empire at that point needed occupation, they weren’t fighting an all out war. I think the clone army only had 6 million troops. Here on earth that would be unstoppable but we’re dealing with a galaxy full of earth like planets. On the flip side, stormtroopers are just inferior and don’t stand a chance long term against an organized military like the Rebel Alliance, I know they take the form of cells but they eventually fully unified around the time of a new hope.

The point that The Republic, and especially the Core Worlds had an overall phobia of droids which became a prejudiced POV against droids, especially powerful droids.
The Clone War wasn’t just tactics and specific battles, it was also about image and sense of security. With these “human” soldiers and Chancellor Palpatine leading and supporting the war effort with the use of this ready-made human military, it would be perceived sense of assurance that there ready-made human soldiers were not like those menacing inorganic droids from these wild Outer Rim Separtists world who seek havoc with the Galatic Core and promote the eventual Empire’s so-called more safe and secure society.

There's a few things about droids.
For starters, they did actually continue using a handfull of droid models such as Droidekas, Dwarf Spider Droids, and a modified type of Commando droid. The problem of adapting the masses of droids into the new military was two parts of the same problem: optics. B1 battle droids were used as a symbol to symbolize Seperatism. And battle droids left many people traumatized, especially after Dirge's Lance and the attack on Corescant.

one ship you forget to mention that replace the LAAT, was the Tie Reaper. Designation TIE/rp Reaper Attack Laner. It was a drop ship that was less efficient than the LAAT. It was seen in Rogue One as it drops off Director Krennic's Death Troopers. They were better armored than the LAAT, but they lack firepower and were easy prey towards Rebel Fighters. They were mostly used to transport and ferry Imperial Special Forces like the Death Troopers to battlefields when they were needed.

In the 1998 PC game "X-Wing Alliance", several levels of the game center around a campaign by the Rebel Alliance to destroy an Imperial droid starfighter development program. In your mission briefings, your senior officers are terrified at the potential of an Imperial starfighter corps that has "no fatigue, minimal maintenance, and all completely loyal to the Empire", as if droid starfighters were some completely new concept.
And then "The Phantom Menace" released in 1999 and massive droid militaries became a thing.

This reminds me of a quote from one of the old Star Wars RPG sourcebooks:
    "Senator,
every being serving knows that the weapons he uses, the ships on which he serves, the droids and computers on which his life depends-every piece of equipment which he will expect to use - was designed as a result of a Senate compromise to keep each constituent commercial interest happy. Upon entering combat with such equipment a crewman's sole consolation is a grim satisfaction that our enemies probably stole their equipment from us."

Agreed! The LAAT was a very capable assault battle taxi, all the Empire had to do is slap an Imperial sticker on it, keep in production and upgrade it where needed and the troops' transport needs are met perfectly. This also means no real need for those expensive and very slow AT-ATs which some would call an "enemy fire sponge."

The major advantage of the LAAT is that it can go from fully closed to fully open very quickly (a matter of seconds really) while on final approach. It can get in, dump a load of troops, and get out of nearby ground-fire range again in, well let's call it a minute. Compare that to the Lambda class, which has to fold its wings up (takes time and reduces manoeuvrability), and actually _land_ before it can start deploying troops (more slowly than a LAAT), then reverse the process to take off again, for a total time of maybe five minutes, giving the enemy ample time to either hit you at your most vulnerable, or get away.

After reading some of the comments I really like the spirit of this channel's viewers
My main gripe is not that LAAT was phased out, but what was the replacement. If you remove the majority of LAAT weaponry and make a cargo-hauling variant you have a great vehicle for transport in areas with rebel activity - fast, reliable, simple to scramble up. Sure, it is overkill for places with little to no combat, but in these cases, any cargo ship will do. Except for Lambda class, like everyone stated here, this is the same as bringing a private jet to Vietnam instead of Huey.
Personally, LAAT is one of my favorite sci-fi aircraft, reminds me of GDI Hammerhead.

The Empire did actually have some successors to the LAAT, such as the MAAT and the Imperial Dropship Transport. The MAAT does have much on it but it was used by Kota and his militia. The Dropship Transport had a smaller profile to the LAAT, though this sacrificed some weaponry and troop space (though it still had the Mass-Driver missile launchers)
The Empire should have used those models instead of making the Lambda and Police Gunship, which overall were not suited for combat scenarios.

I wanted to rule the galaxy, not destroy it. The Imperial Star Destroyer is a fine ship. And we have plenty to invade the entire galaxy several times over!"
"But the Death Star is a deterrent against the old CIS worlds, the Hutts et cetera..."
"And it would cost the Empire over 15 trillion Imperial credits to buy Tarkin!"
"Well, you could say that about anything at the Coruscant Opera House!"
"Besides, I need officers to lead our Clone Stormtroopers."
"But ordinary people as officers? The Jedi might have been misguided, but they were elite officers. We can't have moisture farmers, and barbarians leading our men! And to have officers in the Outer Rim. Not strategically sound."
"Those moisture farmers and barbarians are my subjects Tarkin. Besides, we need a strategic foothold everywhere. Look at this case report - trade ships attacked by smugglers. More Imperial ships needed. You can see how our policy works in the Inner Rim."
"Just an isolated example my Lord."
"Ah yes. And I have a whole range of isolated examples Grand Moff! The purpose of the Imperial Defence Fleet is to combat Outer Rim pirates. So clearly, their headquarters has to be located here in Coruscant lightyears away. The purpose of the Imperial Army Commandos is to respond to Insurrectionists on Tatooine. So clearly, the officers have to be based on Alderaan! The Imperial TIE squadrons and Imperial Border Patrol are there to protect Outer Rim trade routes, so clearly they have to be stationed on the tropical world of Scariff!"
"Your Majesty, I am sure the Chief of Defence Staff has reasons for all of this."
"Well Lord Vader has informed me of even more. Apparently, the Defence Council has put in an order of 50,000 Lambda class shuttles for troop deployment. Luxury shuttles for troop deployment?"
"I believe that the officers believe that Imperial troops should arrive in style, my Lord."
If the Emperor thought he was readying a leadership challenge, trying to succeed him earlier than intended. And we're talking about the Vader who was close to Padme Amidala. Close to the Senator from Chandrilla, Mothma, one of the Emperor's most vocal critics..."
      "Ah. Man overboard."
Tarkin smiled. He pressed his communicator. "Get me the Chief Whip. Mas Amedda."

I agree sorta on number four except the AT-TE really is just a top tier main battle tank. I get the reason for wanting repulser lifts instead of legs, but the walkers legs were what allowed it to be an all terrain vehicle. Letting it scale vertical walls, be used in water, under the water, in space and really anywhere. Plus having anti infantry guns in the back and front covered all ends, the mass driver cannon was a phenomenal main weapon, plus it could carry light vehicles and troops.
