    ... absolute EXCELLENT Video!
A few weeks ago, I bought a Panasonic RX-DT610 for Ebay.
Both Cassette Tape Decks don't work at all. The Seller listed it as Tested/Working ... and NO Returns 😮.
I'm getting a 10-inch Phillips Screw Driver and open it up.
I hope to God I can get them to work.
God Bless and Deliver you and your Family.
    🙂💯🎬

Ah, one of the best boombox ever!
As of the year it was build, it actually there's a difference. The 1993-94 build quality has dropped alot with cheaper components compare to the 1991-92. I myself have the 1992 model and the CD player can play the CD including CD-R with no problem! Although it did had a new motor as it doesn't want to change tracks. When I played the 1993 model and the RX-DT690 for CD player, it won't read the CD-R as kept searching and searching!
Apart from common cassette with new belts, new idle gear and leaf sensor that requires cleaning, the sound quality is great!

That's interesting. The dreaded batch change where they go from good to not so good quality. I just released a part 2 where I finish repairing the cassettes and try a few commercial tapes to see what they sound like. They are a good sounding box.

The cassette decks and cd player on these units are temperamental. Mine sometimes works, sometimes on only one deck, sometimes only in reverse mode... The CD usually loads, but then won't play.
I wired in an Aux line and just use the radio and bluetooth now. Great sound though.

They do have good sound even if nothing else works. It could be the belts in your cassettes. I forgot to check them in this first video, but they were the problem with the decks not operating from cold and jamming the tape and other intermittent stuff. I will have a part 2 video out soon covering that.

Hi there. Own this very unit, yet neither cassette works. Also own the *RX-DT690,* as well. In which while the CD player does work, even brand new CD’s periodically skip a beat or two along the way. So with your extensive knowledge on the subject, I was wondering might you think either issue would be worth getting repaired? And if so, what might be the cheaper of the two (parts, labour etc. included)? Any info. in that regard (if you don’t mind me asking) would be very much appreciated. Thanks kindly for your time. Cheers!!!

The CD would likely only need a service so would be the cheapest to repair. Cassettes can be fairly time consuming and parts may not be available if needed. You may find the CD player mech can be swapped between the two units if the one 680 works OK. Its only some screws and a couple of connectors and you could do it yourself.

Wonder if I could trouble you for some advice? I have this unit and recently the CD player has gotten pretty dodgy-reads some CDs, not others, with no discernible pattern. Sometimes it'll struggle with specific tracks, sometimes it'll read the table of contents but not play, sometimes it just spins without picking up any info at all.
I tried swabbing the lens, to no avail. Does that sound like it needs a new laser? Or is there a way to better assess the issue?

The lasers do commonly fail in Panasonics/Technics. It can be worth trying to clean the prism under the lens to see if it gets them going again. If that fails its usually time to replace the laser.

@@StevesElectronicRepairShop Thank you for the answer! I've found sellers on eBay who sell both the standalone optical pickup as well as the entire traverse unit, and it's $50 vs. $100. Can you advise if there's a reason to buy one over the other, or are there likely to be cheaper knockoffs available? Even $50 is a significant expense if I'm not totally sure the laser is the issue.
Meanwhile I will try cleaning the prism as well if I can get to it. Was also going to try relubricating the rails.

@@lacquerware6962 Its worth trying a service. The whole traverse unit is easier to replace, and might be worth it with units that get faulty spin motors, but I dont think these ones have issues with the motors. I used to just replace the pickup as the rest is a waste of money usually. If its failing to read some discs its almost 100% certain to be the laser.

    Tape deck oke?

The CD player failed in my RX-DT690, I replaced it with a pull from a RX-DS17. Now, I just need to figure out why my tape motors are getting no power.

    • @StevesElectronicRepairShop
      @StevesElectronicRepairShop  Рік тому +1

They seem to use the same laser if not the whole CD mech in many models. Finding a good low hours one is the problem. There should be 14V on the + terminal of your motors. Most likely that is missing. The manual is available on line. I think I got a copy from Elektrotanya. They have some fusible links in them so one of them may have blown.

@@StevesElectronicRepairShopI had found an ebay listing with clear pics of the cd mech, so I was able to see it was identical.
Good place to start on the tape deck, thanks.

Why are there two battery compartment?

One to power the boom box. The other to keep the clock, and presets when unplugged.
