    I’m a forward. This content is so good (and for some reason kinda calming and I don’t know why😅) I’m here watching it. I have mega respect and love for goalies though. They’re my big goofball angels in extra padding. There should be an international hug a goalie day!

    Can we get a 101 on butterfly slide? I'm an out of shape, over weight, over 40year old who just got back into the game after 22 years away and struggling to figure it out.

      That just takes time to figure out your flare and if you have modern enough pads that can slide smoothly.

      @duckattak thanks brother, keep working at it and one day it'll click

      @@itsgoldeneh5992 took me a few months to get it down down where I could control where I went. It took time. I would practice every stoppage of play. Now my main issue is I can’t lift the puck or launch it. I’ve missed so many empty net goals because I don’t know how to launch it haha. There’s no good video out there that shows how to do it really so I struggle

      Former college tendy here! So there are three major components to remember when we butterfly slide. The very first part is our backwards momentum. You want to have a strong c-cut backwards. This will give you the momentum you will Cary in the second part. Part 2 is the weight/ momentum transfer you want to put most of your weight on the push foot or the opposite foot of the direction you want to go. You want less weight on your lead leg as you drop into the b-fly. The third part is point your lead leg toes in the direction you want to go. Your toes are your steering wheel. Little tip as well is lead with your stick this will help direct the puck away and cover the five hole. This helps especially for less flexible and older goalies. Part three is follow through by dropping your push foot as you follow through. Pro tip: don’t do the half butterfly where the pad of your push leg stays vertical you want it on the ice for the seal and the contact with the ice will control your momentum so you don’t over slide! I hope this helps!

    I still struggle with what I can "panicfly". When I am fooled on a shot, bad habit takes over. I pull my heels together in desperation, pulling my already not closed knees apart. This has led to some salty 5 hole goals. Good to know max flare is not always a must.

    I’am 18 years retired goalie and i like your videos. In my “carier” was nobody to tell my this things a I must learned alone with system “try and fail”. It makes many mistakes in my style.

    How do we reduce the gap in the middle that exposes your inner knee pads? Got a well placed shot right above the kneecap that stung, not sure if its how i butterfly or just the movement to make the save that exposed me. Is it normal for that happen - would be the first since i started playing 4 months ago?

    Can you do a video on how to drop to a butterfly properly? I am fine but sometimes I drop and I have a good sized five hole and I drop the same again some time later and it’s a perfect overlap and I never really take notice of how I dropped for each one

      Try driving your knees into the ice inwards. One common mistake to make(i’ve done it aswell) is just drop to your knees or jump down to the ice. Ive learned if you drive them down together you Will have success!

      to add to the helpful comment regarding knee drive, try having the mindset of "nothing under & nothing through" when you drop in the BF. A term a goalie coach once mentioned to me was; "box up".

      Terrible biomechanical advice. Drive your knees into the ice together. Valgus form. Say goodbye to your ability to walk when you get older.

      @@jasonbarlow8161that's how it's done. Butterfly is rough on the joints, if it bothers you don't do it and have a weak 5 hole or play standup

    What do you recommend for paddle size? I’m 5’8” and I use a 26” which I feel is too big when in butterfly but any shorter and don’t keep my stick on the ice in my stance

    • @MarcoCostantini33
      @MarcoCostantini33 11 місяців тому +1

      26 definitely too big for that height

    • @great_gravity
      @great_gravity 3 місяці тому

      I’m 6’3” and use the same size paddle as you. Sounds like you’re not crouching enough in your stance if your paddle isn’t touching the ice. When I’m in my stance or in the butterfly my stick is positioned right where it needs to be on the ice, and when I’m standing the stick is not even close to being there. Sounds like you’re just not getting very low in your stance.

      If your knees are shot I would avoid the butterfly and play standup

  • @jimclements2890

    If the shooter is in tight, would it not make more sense to have that narrow BF as opposed to flair the pads a bit and open the 5 hole?

    • @somethingsomething8511
      @somethingsomething8511 5 місяців тому

      You shouldn't be opening your 5 hole a ton when you do a blocking flair and your stick should be be projected out to cover the direct 5 hole attempt. You want your legs flaired out because you won't have the time to react with a kick save.
