A friend of mine made an interesting remark when we were in undergrad perhaps a decade ago. She said that if you look at the male/female distribution within academic disciplines, the _best_ predictor of this across disciplines is how much the field is perceived as "talent-driven" vs. "hard-work-driven." So something like physics - where the best people like Einstein or Feynman are viewed as "very intelligent" - is male-dominated, because it's viewed as talent-driven. On the other hand, nursing is female-dominated because it's viewed as hard-work-driven. Or even within science, compare physics vs. biology in their gender distributions. She herself was in philosophy, which despite being in the humanities apparently has a huge sexism problem, and she noted that it fits here: to become a philosopher you have to be viewed as smart, not hardworking, so the male prevalence is expected.
what is talent after all sir ? hard work done intelligently ? how to develop intelligence ? learn how to learn ? learn how to find robust solutions. consider all approaches. understand where your understanding fit into the big puzzule, get the big picture. identify your biases in your thought process.. develop the flow for working... meet sit eat with the people solving the similar problem... or if you are doing something new then isolate yourself from the world for 6 months.... bore your family members by discussing your weird ideas with them.... help someone to understand the topic... learning the models of decision making to identify how actually we are approaching the problem.. read the biographies of big personalities to take inspiration from their journey... i think comfort is the enemy of talent... but you should be comfortable to fail 1000 times... another point - sir considering we are the same AI model with some persons having more neurons than other, but we can increase the number of neurons by taking the right nutrients, meditation, exercise both physical and mental... all we have to do is training the model on more diverse and diverse data.. so that we can identify the pattern in diverse fields .. and we even might not be aware from where its coming...
If summarise all that said great talented people (e.g. Edison, Mozart, etc.), one can come to the follow conclusion: genius is 90+ percent of the hard working and all other is talent or luck.
Yes talented people must work hard in the direction of their talent. But students must find their talent during their school years so that they don’t waste their youth in studying things they do not like and cannot contribute to

Not mentioning PhD advisor is fine but people often mention university name if that helps the case. Otherwise they can just say that the person has a PhD degree. A good reference letter should amplify the positive qualities of the applicant.

Well that is a cynical take way to look at academia. To be happy in academics one must have a reverence for research, teaching, writing and publications. Otherwise one should be in corporate world. Both types of people are needed and different cultures and communities and subgroups of people are more amenable to each. You can see this in the successful professors at top institutions.

Yes there is of course the nature vs nurture debate and ways to ameliorate the situation if one does not have a head start in life.
Sir, could you please make a video on how scientific inquiry shapes one's perspective?
Sure I will

Sir, while sending the referral, is it fine if the professor does not mention the name of the prospective PhD supervisor and the university?
