Dr. Bill, I recently found your videos, I started learning ASL two months ago. I love the way you teach and all your awesome videos.
Love this series on superpowers - been obsessed with comics for awhile so this is great vocab for me to have! Cäsar definitely thought you meant Evel Knieval when you said David Copperfield - Both great performers!

This looks like a great video! I have been learning sign language and some of your videos are extremely helpful, but I am far from fluent at the moment. It would be great to have closed captions available to help this material be more accessible to those who aren't fluent in sign language? Thanks so much for all the great work you are doing!
I agree that the option to turn on captions is a great resource or benefit to the learning process. Captioning companies charge $7 to $10 per minute of ASL to English captioning.
Thus a video like this one will cost around $350.00 to $500,00 caption (faster turn-around times cost more).
Considering the total number of videos, the captioning of this channel can be done for the amazingly low price (ha) of around $105,000.00

Someday I truly do hope / plan on captioning these videos. For now though I've made the decision to focus on creating more lessons rather than captioning existing lessons.
For those who can't understand the more advanced discussions, I encourage them to start at the beginning of the ASLU playlist and work their way up to the more advanced content.

@@sign-language It's actually really exciting to get to a place where I can mostly understand the signed parts in between the text. It's a great comprehension check.
I think not having the caption helps me to focus on the signs. It would be too distracting to have to read and pay attention to the signs at the same time. When I am not sure about a sign, I just slow down the video and try my best guess. In my experience, the sign will come up again and with context most likely I will understand the meaning. However, the best way is to learn is to start watching the videos from the very first video in the play list and then follow the sequence.
Fun video! I appreciate the link for the phone in your comment. I've always assumed that the casual sign for WATCH only applies to TV watching. Is that right or not? Thanks.
I know of no reason why the "WATCH-(casual)" version would be limited to just "TV." Real life experience indicates that the sign is used as a general way to express casual or relaxed watching.

Can we use any of the signs for poison to also mean venom or only BONES? And since this is superhero themed, could we use any of those for the character (Venom) (in context)?
That is a great question.
In circumstances where English concept of Venom is being mapped to (as in the character named Venom) I would avoid doing the "P" handshape at the neck as a version to sign Venom since the "P" is more closely tied to the term "poison" than "venom." However, lots of people sign lots of "stuff." So my advice is to stay very flexible and open minded about comic book character type signs and expect quite a bit of variation. The "bones" sign would be great for Venom except it also works well for the Crossbones character and thus it is going to depend on which character you are discussing as to whether the "bones" sign means Venom or Crossbones.
I can imagine someone promoting either a one or two-handed version of "teeth" to mean Venom (for obvious reasons).
Until any particular sign for Venom becomes well established I'd just spell "Venom" and follow it up with BONES -- in the context of discussing Spider-Man or similar comics.

Another option option would be the sign we use to mean HAIR-RAISING-(on arm).
