I'm fairly sure the camera also splits the difference when you select a group that has units in several places on the map in AoE2, rather than jumping to the most recent addition.
I’m surprised siege towers work that way. I thought they would setup against an opponent’s wall and function like a gatehouse allowing footsoldiers to move on and off the wall from that point.
That is how they work, and how they worked in AOE2, he just didn't take the time to try it out because he was busy with the battle. Once it is 'hooked' to the wall, you can selected troops and send them on the wall and they will use the Siege tower as a ladder. Remains to be seen if a fully manned wall becomes a legit defensive strategy.
@@AFBBProductions I'd like to try Chinese gunpowder units lining the walls with the great gatehouse landmark built. It would like pretty cool especially on a mountainous fortress looking wall
Hey, Spirit, I was wondering if AoE 4 does well enough are you thinking about making Civ overviews? The Civ Overviews are some of the most interesting videos on the platform, and seeing them for AoE 4 would be dope!
The first few weeks to months should be all about balancing the multiplayer and fixing bugs + optimizing. So it would be even longer than just waiting for stability in player population.
So, the funny thing about that is that when I was a kid (8ish?), I introduced a friend of mine to Age. He went home and told his parents how I introduced him to the game "Ancient Vampires". Yeah, their parents had a chat with mine about what games I was showing their son XD
@@omarm7968 XD After they talked with my parents and realized what the game was, they had no issues with their son playing it, and they even got him the game a year or so later. But that initial conversation 😂😂😂

Id love to see some of your Mongol gameplay. I really liked playing them and was super excited to play some more when it launched. I learned however I am absolutely horrible at the game, so much to learn.
Usually play as mongol by immediately search for stone and built ovo, then place the town center on the corner of ovo with position near any resources (wood/gold). All villager then goes to the sheep and Create more villager to wood till 100 and create ger to gold (to wood if your tc already near gold). Get to feudal, place archery range on another corner of the ovo then spam mangundai till get about 5-8. Go with your khan and kill enemy villager as much as you can, while also create more and more mangundai. Create blacksmith if you have the wood, research siege, then build barrack so you can create battering ram, 2 is enough. Now end your enemy. Even hardest feels easy
Happy that you main the Mongols, as they are my main faction as well and I think there will be many nuances to be found for their play (that you will hopefully find and highlight).
I think the game does, it reeeally got me crazy how spirit didnt even got a spear or two to protect his archers and how he didn't make a single ram with them. Both rides, to yellow and red, could have killed them if he had added 5 spears and two rams on them.
@@ronansuperfrog8425 I think it always does is just that it gets more important with every age, in early ages like feudal is easier to get around with more of the same unit, like bows or infantry. But is always useful to mix even a couple units because the counters are very hard in comparison to previous aoe games I feel. Specialy for destroying buildings if you are going for an archer rush, you have the economy is not that hard.
If you dont mix units you will get countered very hard. No cavalry? Splash artillery will murder you. All heavy armor? Enjoy getting crossbowed/handcannoned to death. Archer cavalry? Enjoy dying to grounded ranged, especially cannons.
Oh yeah and speaking of hotkeys, I found one major annoyance during the stress test. They swapped the buttons and hotkeys for the lumber camp and mining camp compared to AoE2. I constantly built mining camps by accident near tree lines and such, my muscle memory let me down. Not as much letdown as the design team regarding hotkeys in AoE4 though. XD
*Select all Military:* Ctrl + M (or Ctrl, Shift + C) Also, when I want to pump out as many of one unit from a specific building, I hotkey that building to 9 or something (ctrl + 9), and then just tap 9, and hold down Q to queue all of that unit. Nice playthrough, man. You make me feel so useless at this game, haha.
I think the main purpose for siege towers is to drop some units near enemy archers firing from the top and cut them down. If there aren't any you can run down the gates , but dropping only 8 units at a time seems a bit slow otherwise.
This has given me such a great visual as to how I need to play. Been playing almost 2 weeks and I've been able to point out so much wrong I've been doing...like rushing farms for instance LOL.
Scouts can hunt deer with ranged atk, and they can also pick up the corpses and bring them back to your base. So no point to not build your mill at the berries, which you can't move.
@@redhammer92 its super cheap (75g/25w) and available from the second age. You really shouldn't run out of food resources other than deer before you can easily acquire it. And it will pay itself back through saving you wood from not having to build farms for longer.
you can also press ctrl+shift+c to select all military, then ctr+click on the icon of the type you want to see, then home to see where it is. rebind home if that's a key you want to use often i suppose
So far, I've been enjoying the game, though some of the controls are gonna take a bit to get used to. Now if I may add, the Hotkey for "Select all idle military" is Ctrl+, by default. (for some reason you can't set it to Shift, but oh well.) Sadly, there's no hotkey for selecting only Villagers at this moment, but I guess for now if we were to select units+villagers, we can Shift+click their icons in the UI to deselect them, or Ctrl+Click the unit icon we want it to select only that unit type.
Try pressing F1, F2, F3, and F4, it cycles through selecting all of various building types, then you can just click on the variety you want to work with.
even easiest sees the whole map, play on revealed map to see how it cheats, because it sends units where it cant/couldnt see. Did you build up heavily ? No attack. No defenses ? Assaults, where there is nothing defending, like trade. This is standard relic cheating ai. Their standard troll procedure in previous games (CoH, 2, DoW 2,3 = line of sight evasion.for troll sake) A few months before Western Front armies, they implemented a non-vision cheater, where they would explore and react, without prior knowledge, so ambushes were possible. WFA released and all the AI progress was reverted. In CoH 2 for example trying to ambush an AI is impossible, it does make mistakes but otherwise evades your line of sight without seeing your units.
You can sorta select all TCs by pressing F4. It will also select all landmarks and if you try to queue villagers, it would distribute the queue among all of the structures that can produce villagers.
If you control+click on the unit in a group it will isolate that unit If you shift click it will remove them from the larger group. So shift click vills to leave them out of army movement. Control click to select them to build something.
I think one problem is the camera it's really low, to the point that trebuchet stones fly above the camera position. They should move the camera a lot higher, but zoom in so you can se the entire trajectory of the stones, like in AoE2 (even if that is 2D) but the effect is the same. Satellite view vs drone view

Not to mention leaning to manage your eco under early pressure from players with better/more mobile civs. If you get to castle age with a desirable number of villagers and ressources, you really survived the worst and it's time to increase pressure with a balanced army. This is really unrelated, but why did you remove your intro song from your videos?
Would be good to have some AOE4 intro with your old song :)
At 18:27 it looks like you autobuilt farms around the mill... how did you do that? 🧐
My question too!
@@ReVeralife Hold shift and right click the mill
Tried out the Chinese yesterday... The tax collectors are pretty clutch and hilarious 😂
Me getting stomped by Hardest: I suck
Me finding this video title: Oh it's something good players make vids on beating, maybe I don't suck
Spirit: I think I'll add a 2nd AI at Intermediate b/c 1 Hardest will be too easy
Me: I suck
Can someone let me know if AOE4 has a progression system? For example, does finishing single/multi games offer any rewards for playing? An explanation would be nice. Thanks!
You level up and earn some cosmetic rewards. Nothing that changes the gameplay.
Like the other said. You unlock nice goodies, like Icons, Background theme and a different statue which is inside your Hometown.
Any reason why you did not choose build RAM at earlier stage (after researching from blacksmith)?
WOuld it be viable to rush a player with Peasants since they use bows?
The player your rushing would know that you wouldn't have any eco to train proper units or build a landmark
What if your archers are arranges with the Z key and each row is a control group,(1, 2, and 3) with the whole group being 4, so you can activate Row 1 palings and not everyone in the group..?
Will you make Civ overviews and balance changes videos on AOE4
I think the big thing you were missing in castle was building rams
After few games I must say its realy like Age of Mythology (visual and gameplay mechanics) without monsters. And I love it. Sound design is so pleasent to ears.
Also for those who want more gritty AoE RTS check out Ancestors legacy. Its excelent game and units have over 1000 different combat animations!

What are your thoughts on zoom level?
too much big.

That unsymmetrical 'Victory' banner is giving me an OCD attack... how could they miss it?
How are you moving your military waypoint without the camera jumping? I hit f1 and the camera always jumps to buildings
btw there's a "Select all army" hotkey :)
Here I am trying to be A.I. Intermediate and getting my butt kicked. GG. I like your outro song.
Does anyone know what the deer stones landmark does for the mongols? All it says is it gives "the yam network" wtf that means XD
More movement speed for units and Vills .you can expand the range with Towers
@@zanto9812 thank yee mucho grande
Question - is hardest ai any harder than in beta? I played against it and it seemed that it's really easy compared to extreme from aoe 2 de which i maybe could beat only using certain tactics, not just normal gameplay.
to be fair aoe2 ai has had years upon years of iteration. but yea seems like it's pretty east
1v2 as Holy Roman Empire with the 2 AI on hardest with Roman Empires 400% infantry keep is so overpowered lol
22:30 do you think sotl knows he can use more than one controllgroup?
hardest ai too easy for you and here i was struggling to survive easiest lmao
Damn, you're bad. Are you doing like 15 APM or smt?
they need to fix walling and so building next to each other make a barrier.
Thanks again Spirit
I don't know if my game is bugged or what but i tried skirmish against a easy A.i today to try and learn the game.
The description was an easy A.i with light attacks and small armies or something like that.
3min into the game i had a army of around 60 units in my base.
It'll poke you here and there but it pulls punches often.
@@HighLanderPonyYT i definitely got both pocked and punched 🤷
How do you build so many farms at once with one worker? at 15:19
shift+click on the mill builds around it
I am currently playing against the hardest ai and tbh right now it's having an off day. The minute they get rush, it's almost instant win
