  • Part 2 of the FlightFactor A320 series. Learn to fly the A320 with an A320 pilot.
    We join the flight just prior to top of descent and explore using Managed Descent, Open Descent and Vertical Speed to manage the vertical flight path leading to a conventional ILS approach to runway 21 at Lisbon, LPPT
    Errors, Omissions, Simplifications, Clarifications :-
    1) When the engines have been shut down on stand the fuel pumps should also be switched off. This is a task for the pilot monitoring.
    2) The GPWS Terrain caution is due to the terrain closure rate. The aircraft is descending on the normal profile while the terrain rises to meet the aircraft. With an EGPWS fitted aircraft this is less likely as a terrain database allows the EGPWS to do "Envelope Modulation", making the warning less sensitive in known specific locations. Like navigation data accuracy, PAPI positioning, runway lighting etc, this is just another allowance one has to make for a simulated environment. Similar issues occur on real full flight simulators.

    Graham, Your attention to detail is phenomenal. Your turned on the strobe light before you crossed a runway is just one example of which I could name many.. You "place" the speed brake into position and do not "flick" it, you set the transponder to 2000 after the flight. Military flight schools make future aviators fold their socks, align their uniforms in the closet, shine their shoes , utilize the "gig" line while wearing the uniform and have all the rank insignias proper distances from the edges of the collar etc, to teach one thing which is "attention to detail". Thank you my friend for another great and extremely educational video.

    Thank you Graham for a very informative video. Great for someone that has just purchased the FF A320. It is great that you take the time to share your knowledge with Flight Simmers like myself, who, at the age of 76 will never get to fly a jet liner. Many thanks for your time.

      The avionics, flight controls and aerodynamic engineers that designed the aircraft are the ones who amaze me - they make the flying bit easy! Then to replicate that whole machine in a simulator is indeed amazing.

    I absolutely agree with the comment below about your attention to detail. I have watched many videos on how to fly my new purchase and not one of them come close to your professionalism and flow of teaching. This is one of the very best teaching videos on UA-cam and I say this as an ex IT teacher. Most of the guys that try to make teaching videos on the A320 Ultimate, in my opinion, miss out so much vital detail. Your explanation of decent options was utterly fantastic. Good teaching means get to the point and forget about talking about personal life issues and comments made. I like videos that waste no time of rubbish fillers. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos, which I will be watching another few times. I cannot believe your videos are free. Thanks Graham, Eddie.

    Hey Graham - I hope this comment finds you well. I did your tutorial flight to LPPT 1:1 this night and it was awesome to have you 'on bord'. It was like a simulator training and so detailed. To be very honest: your expertise about a320 gives a lot of depth and makes flying so interesting. You have a very reassuring and unpretentious way to explain how to manage the aircraft. Maybe this motivates you for new normal or special procedure videos around the a320. Thank You so much for your input on UA-cam!

    Thank you, very informative. Nifty little trick with positioning the view where the marshaller would be. You probably already know this, but there's a free little X-Plane plugin called "AutoGate" that will give you an animated jetways, VDGS and marshallers, provided that the scenery author put it in (not in the default sceneries that ship with the sim, but many free add-in sceneries from the org forums use it).

However, I’ve been looking at a spec for an i7-8700K, 16GB, RX580 8GB computer. That’s about the most I can stretch to at the moment but should be a good upgrade to my i5 2500 and 1GB 6850!

    Hi Super instructive Video, but just wondering, you go from STD to local QNH at about 30000, isn't this suppose to be done at Transition altitude ??

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 років тому

      Firstly in the descent Transition Level is relevant. In the climb it would be Transition Altitude. The Trans Alt remains constant, the Trans Level is given by Air Traffic Control or the ATIS. The reason is the lowest available flight level depends on atmospheric pressure. With a QNH or Altimeter setting of 988 hPa and a Trans Alt of 6000 ft, the Trans Alt would be equivalent to approx FL068, so the first available flight level (maintaining at least 1000ft separation) will be FL080. However with a QNH of 1020 hPa FL070 would be available, hence why the Trans Alt is fixed and published on the charts and the Trans Level is given by air traffic.
      Let's say air traffic clear you to descent to from cruise to Altitude 5000ft. There isn't any reason why the QNH setting isn't set straight away, in fact it's safer to set it as soon as cleared. That way the aircraft will capture 5000ft.
      If you leave STD until Trans Level then forget to set QNH (the closer to the airport you are, the more ATC chatter and potential distraction there is) you will level at FL050, which in my example of 988 hPa could be as low as 4300 ft. You could end up only 200 ft away from opposite direction traffic.
      Note the Airbus will flash the QNH value when climbing above TA with QNH set as if to say "Look! You forgot me!", but it won't flash the QNH even way above transition as you descend.
      So in summary, no, you don't need to leave the QNH setting until below Trans Level, nor do you need to leave STD until above Trans Alt. What matters is the cleared Altitude / Flight Level, not the current position. That isn't to say some company SOPs may mandate a different procedure but what I describe above is a very common way to do it. It may be different in places like the USA where a common high TA of 18000 ft is used, in Europe it can be very low.
      Hope this helps!

    So open decent, speed brake out, will increase your rate of decent.
    Or... open decent, turn speed dial up, will also increase your rate of decent.
    🙏 Graham

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  5 років тому +1

      Yes exactly. All you need is more drag! Speed brake, flaps, gear, extra speed will all increase the rate of descent. If air traffic keep us really high then slowing down to about 180 kts with Flaps 2 selected produces a very good angle of descent. Though you should keep in mind 1500 fpm at 200 kts is a steeper angle than 2000 fpm at 400 kts!. Have a look at my Groundschool: Descent Planning video.

      As far as I can remember there should always be a top of descent arrow - there may be some circumstances where it won't show up but to be honest I can't remember. I've not flown the Aerosoft model. The thing to keep in mind is simply to fly the aircraft at all times and if something isn't working right then make the appropriate inputs to change it. Using the 3x table method I describe in my video ua-cam.com/video/NBFKm7huIkQ/v-deo.html works really well, and on the Airbus Open Descent and VS work just like any other aircraft.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Charles. Failure videos are not something I'd like to do for a few reasons. To do failure management correctly you need two pilots, the full QRH and a lot of training time. The issue is the further away from normal operations you get, the less likely the sim model is to behave like the real thing. Also, the normal operations that I show I do every day in the real thing, but thankfully I’ve got a lot less real world experience of engine failures! Obviously we practice them in the sim every few months and depending on the exact failure can be really hard work, but to then translate that experience into a recreation desktop sim is a lot more difficult. Hope that makes sense.?

    Quick question - why not using DH when flying an ILS approach? Why not just use a RA of 200 for all approaches?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 роки тому

      Decision Height is only used for cat 2 and cat 3 approaches, for cat 1 and above we use Decision Altitude. The reason is the minima published is a baro minima, so must come from the altimeter not the radio altimeter. Remember that even 200 feet above the runway the aircraft is more than half a mile from the start of the runway, the terrain under the aircraft is almost never flat so 200 feet “radio” (i.e. measured directly underneath the aircraft) is not the same as 200ft above the runway. Hope that makes sense?

    Thank you so much sir! those are some great quality videos! i just have a few questions about the approach, i found my plane alwasy end up with too high on the glide slope, probably becasue i extended flaps before the appr mode. but is there a way to use flaps to slow down before the plane activate the appr mode itself?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 років тому

      When the aircraft is not in approach phase the aircraft will target climb, cruise or descent speed as required, or 250 knots if below the limiting level. It’s best to get into the habit of selecting a speed, activate the approach phase, then either select a lower speed or manage speed and select flaps as required. Selecting flap without the approach phase active is not really a good idea as you would use selected speeds to do so, and when you re-manage the speed the aircraft will accelerate.

      Most operational charts will publish this. If your charts do not have this, for an ILS (in the Sim only!) you could simply use 200 feet above the threshold elevation as the minima.

I follow your steps but it just start to auto thrust up and climb i'm was hoping the you could do a video to help me by using my airport please let me know just a short flight from KBUF to KSWF the air bus is not like 737-800 which i have for both sim P3D v4 and Xplane 11 and i have to say i enjoy more Xplane then i do P3D v4

    Hi Graham. Great videos. One thing I didn't ever realise is that you set the QNH from Std at that height at 1:40. Is this the norm?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 років тому

      Hi, sorry for the delay replying. It can vary from airline to airline. Some wait for the Transition altitude when in the climb before selecting Standard, and the Transition Level in the descent before going back to QNH. However I've always been taught to select STD when the cleared level is a flight level, and the QNH when cleared to an altitude. You can see this logic as the Airbus with flash the QNH if you have it set while above transition, but will not flash when STD is set below transition in the climb. Hope that makes sense.

    Hello sir how do you know when to engage approach phase

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 роки тому

      Usually Pilots preference - I usually wait until I'm finished with managed descent, so usually below 10000ft, and when I need to slow down to approach speeds so a minimum of 25 track miles. The aircraft will activate approach phase automatically when it's in Nav mode as it passes the (D) on the nav display flightplan, but the vast majority of approaches flown IRL are radar vectored so manual activation is required.

    Hi Graham, love your videos. I wonder if you can help me. On coming into land the plane seems to be on the localiser but never seems to capture the glideslope. When ever the runway comes into sight i am always too high and have to go around. I am landing mainly on Runway 27 right at EGLL. I am obviously not setting up right but can't seem to rectify it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  5 років тому

      It sounds like you are intercepting the localiser far too close in. For EGLL 27R, fly level at 3000 ft. Flap 1 and speed managed and aim to be on the localiser with G/S FMA in Blue at 12 miles out. The glideslope intercept will be at around 9 miles. There’s a video on the IXEG series that shows self positioning for the ILS, that may help too.

Can I ask, to advice me, where I do a fault/mistake, please ? Detailed Manual is missing, unfortunately. Many thanks, Alex

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 роки тому

      Hello Alex, what steps are you taking? In general if you’ve loaded the ILS approach on the MCDU and activated approach phase on the PERF page, then the ILS approach should be straight forward. What indications do you see in the FMA columns (top of the PFD) when your are trying to intercept the ILS?

  • @Noctureal

    Hi! I'd like to know are operations overall quite strict or is there some freedom for pilots own preferences? Like I do like to use selected speed when landing. So is skipping some automation allowed if pilot so wishes to do?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 років тому

      It depends on the airline really, but for the most part pilots can fly manual flight/manual thrust if they prefer as long as certain conditions are met. Remember though it’s not recreational flying, and crews on the short haul Airbus will usually have a very busy schedule with long days and minimum rest. With that in mind we’ll do can to make each day as easy and safe as possible and the automation exists to make flying easier. If the autothrust is used, we would almost always use managed speed for landing in order to benefit from the protections that Groundspeed Mini offers.

    • @Noctureal
      @Noctureal 6 років тому

      Makes sense. I think most people like to fly Boeing in simulator because it has more to do and after all this is enternainment for us. Of course pilots who fly a lot and have long days want to let automation handle as much as possible!
      I have question also related on smoking sign and seatbelt sign auto mode. If I've read correctly they make both lights illuminate in certain situations? But how about no smoking sign because I think smoking is not allowed at least in Europe so should it put to ON position always?
      Thanks for answers and great videos. You definitely got sub from me because I really do love Airbus and it is nice to watch well made professional videos!

    One question: Nearly reaching top of desdent, I put level of IAF and managed descend, but the aircraft does not descend. I do not know why this happen? Perhaps is because I have not activate approach in MCDU. So if I want to descend i have to put open descend.

      Thank you, Graham; I will see in my next flight what you say. I only remember that in managed descend, I did not descend, so I have to put open descend if I want to do it. I do not remember the color shown on altitude in FMA.

      I’ll be looking at this in the next video, but when flying a go around the aircraft should reload the approach you’ve just flown. Sequencing the flight plan so the correct waypoint is next and the activating the approach phase should be all that’s required. Video will be out on Wednesday.

    Hi quick question, I see that on the FMA you get an up and down arrow on the mouse. I have downloaded this flight sim and I am struggling to work the FMA as I can’t turn the knobs to adjust speed heading and altitude. I wondered if it was a bug as other knobs and switching has a plus and minus symbol which to me indicates an ability to turn the knob. All I can do is pull or push for selected and managed.
    It must be me! It usually is. Any help from your good self or other subscriber would be great.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations

      Hi Martin, As David 99 mentioned the mouse wheel lets you adjust the values, and you can push and pull also. It's quite a small input area for four separate functions - just one of the compromises necessary for desktop simulation.

      Normally one would use open descent to descend early or to manage the profile manually. Managed descent when a descent to a constraint in the FMGC plan is desired.

    hi, do i have to put on ap2 after approach or is it ok to only use ap1? and can i use loc first and then later a bit i put the appr buttom its okay too?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 роки тому

      Yes you can do either. By convention AP1 is used by the Captain and AP2 by the FO (depending on who is Pilot Flying for that flight). It's OK to use Loc first, but unnecessary - the aircraft will not follow the Glideslope unless established on the Localiser first so OK to go straight to Appr.

    i dont understand how an intermediate waypoint without constraints helps when being vectored.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 роки тому +1

      It’s all about keeping the flight plan in sequence David. If the flight plan was taking you to a waypoint 15 miles downwind, and you get turned in at 8 miles the FMGC will still have that original waypoint as the target which by now will be behind you. This means navigation guidance will not be available on any go around. By adding the radial in this ensures the flight plan stays “in sequence” should you have to go back to NAV guidance for any reason. Hope that makes sense?

      I’m afraid I don’t know much about the documentation, but I’ve heard before that it’s a bit lacking - By loading the approach on the flight plan it should tune the ILS automatically, and the throttles are usually left in A/THR in the CLB detent from thrust reduction after takeoff until after landing. If you have any specific queries I’d be happy to help.

      Check the FMA's - Magenta means a managed target (i.e. from the FMS flight plan) whereas blue would be selected. I'd guess you have a departure altitude constraint and the second FMA column is saying ALT CST rather than ALT. Pull the altitude knob to get open climb and you should have a blue target altitude.
