  • A guide to Hügelkultur, a guide to Hugelkultur.
#Hügelkultur is a word with German origins. 'Hügel' means 'Hill' or 'Mound'. 'Kultur' in this context is about the earth or soil.
The practice is hundreds of years old.
It is a #sustainable form of gardening similar to #permaculture which essentially involves burying #organic matter in a trench or pit and then covering or burying it in #soil.
Eventually the #organic matter will break down, decay and #compost and feed the soil above.
    Billions of soil organisms, #invertebrates #insects, #worms, #nemetodes, #bacteria and #fungi, will digest the #earth.
Larger logs are used at the bottom of the mound, these are rich in carbon. This locks the carbon in and acts as slow release #fertiliser. For balance a variety of garden waste and kitchen waste is added, this can include cardboard and grass cuttings.
Maintain a good balance between ingredients, not too much of any one thing, especially grass cuttings, as these can become slimy.
Include kitchen waste and sods or turf and top it off with soil. Plant directly into the soil.
Water each layer as you build the mound because the decomposition process needs moisture.
The decay process will produce heat and create a #hotbed for your #plants
With occasional top dressing and feed the Hügelkultur mound will supply food for up to 10 years.
