  • The first part of the poem used a hymn-like melody to represent an Orthodox service, which is later interrupted by chaotic revolutionary songs and anti-Christian poetry. Like Shostakovich's 2nd Symphony, the piece ends in a tonal, triumphant, but trite "proletarian" chorus.
