It isn’t that fast; the limit on motors of these are 377mph-559mph. Of course these people are forcing it to max. But just bc it is max doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful to itself, but people thought it would do vvvveeerrryy little to no harm at all.
As the voltage goes up, the arc gets longer, until it can bridge the gap between opposite sides. All power then goes through the arc, it becomes a carbon arc lamp, and quickly burns up the carbon rods. Rapidly disintegrating carbon also sticks to the commutator helping to bridge the arc around to the other side. The big generator has better reaction-force spring brushes. It probably took this abuse with no damage at all.
That first one... Holy fucking shit fucker, sounded like a goddamn jet spinning up, Put a damn propeller on that thing and you could probably fly a fricken house!
These perfectly working motors could have been sent to less fortunate countries like the United States. But blowing up in the name of science is much more worthy.
Many of these experiments are actually illegal in the former Soviet republic of Motoristan; motor worship is the official state religion there. They even have a dishwasher motor on their flag.
This can make a cool episode in some car chase, where the hero turns the engine of his electric car to the overdrive mode and seeing it literally burn, but still providing power to escape (or catch up). Also, internal combustion engines don't fail that spectacularly.
Yeah, internal combustion engines just kinda chuck parts through the block (usually a connecting rod or piston) but electric motors not only sound like jet engines but they actually explode in a rain of sparks and bullshit!
i love all these vids, there is one thing yet to be seen on UA-cam: a motor disintegrating by true rotational forces - the common mode of failure seen so far seems to be a combo of commutator/winding overheat.
What I'm curious about is how in the hell did you get that huge generator up there? Unless this is in another room of course, but damn, those are some spectacular burnouts, I had to watch it twice!
Wow, red stinking hot commutator bars! Good job, the builders, balancing those armatures so well that they can spool up way past their designed rpms without dancing across the floor.
If you put a laser in the path of the spindle so it interrupts the beam, and the uninterrupted path into a photosensor, and hook it up to an oscilloscope, you might be able to get RPM readings at failure vs. max spec. Are the brushes the cause of failure, or are there bearings burning up from friction at flame-out?
Well i enjoyed watching this man did them motor's hit some SERIOUS RPM,LOL they were cooking and on fire AWESOME i love stuff like this i say thank god for people doing stuff like this it is what make's life interesting sound's like a jet,lol WE HAVE LIFTOFF.
I wonder if you were to put those in a sealed container with a clear lid and fill or pressurize it with sulfur hexafluoride to reduce arcing, and thus reduce contact erosion, you could get some serious R's out of those. I know the Navy's new railgun uses it as a pre-charge buffer gas to help reduce it's considerable plasma rail erosion, it would probably work fairly well on a motor's contacts. High power electrical cabinets that are prone to large arc flashes have canisters of it that spray inside the cabinet if they do go off, it's like Halon is to regular fire, but to electrical fire/plasma except it acts as an insulator. The only limits to revs would be the resistance heating.
