  • Hello there and welcome to my video. In this video, I'll investigate and fix a computer that I bought off of eBay in the "for parts or not working" category. This specific system is supposed to be a Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF with an Intel Core i5 6500, 4GB of RAM, and no drives, but it turned out to be a surprising bit more than this and a great deal for me in all...

A rubber mallet and blocks of soft wood, are the tools for bending metal.

This was a great video. A similar situation happened to me where I had bought a Lenovo H-50 system for cheap from a family friend who said it wasn't turning on and bought a new system, but I took it home and it booted without any issues

I like videos like this where older PC's are repaired and repurposed and put back to good use and not in a landfill. I've accumulated a stash of older PC's and workstations mostly HP brand (My DD is a Dell 3620) and am trying to do the same to them. I may even try custom painting a few. Good body work on that Dell lol.

Using one of those Dell slim computer as a bench computer as nice and small and only computer that works with my various programmers while my newer computers don't. It not due to OS, it due to the chipset and USB controller in these are great with older hardware.

I tend to CUT the grillage out of such Optiplexes, to increase airflow. I'll substitute some rigid air filter instead. Seems to work :-)

The reason they say no drive for that law that prevents places like goodwill and who ever else sells used computer equipment some even take the ram out for fear of personal information be stored in ram

  • @bjarne431

Its funny, ive also picked up systems multiple times that had more ram than advertised. 99% of the time the extra ram works flawlessly after reseating it or moving it to another system

Do you have a link for that fantastical coin-cell tester?

  • @ChillyBeatz18

the reason it cant activate is because the customer (MIGHT) be using tiny11 tiny 11 is a micro version of windows 11

  • @mayday9621

how much did you pay for it ? it's a decent machine . I'm running a very similar Optiplex 3050 as my daily driver with a few upgraded bits .

A really good way to discharge the power supply is to unplug from the mains then press the power button until all LED's have lit up and then gone out.

Not bad, and yeah I'd have certainly replaced the PSU & added in a HDD. For use as a Minecraft server I'd be fine with 8GB total RAM - the two matched sticks of DDR4-2133 - especially with a Linux distro. Really not a bad unit, and I'm surprised the factory SSD even had Windows 11 on it!

WTH happened to this poor system? I'm watching with rapt attention, hoping you figure it out by the end, because I don't have clue.

When you have a metal case in need of a loving tap from a hammer, use a solid flat surface both under and on top of the point you wish to straighten (like a sandwich). When you strike the flat surface you dissipate the impact point avoiding the bumps and ripples you referred to.

I just got back to Sweden after a long semester finishing university in America and this is a great way to close out the day and finally relax!

  • @litchi4507

An Intel Core i5-6500 running Windows 11? This is not officially certified operating systems.

  • @PC4USE1

Wow,I've heard about 'bulging capacitors ' but not bulging case.

  • @Aspiring-Hobo

This happens, or can happen when these machines are piled up on pallets, they pile a million of these up on top of each other when they are hauled out the offices for sale. I have a very slightly crushed Dell, not enough to affect function though

  • @chumbawumba1959

IMHO ... this was more of a situation where the PC was jammed against something. The item that it was pressed against caused both the huge dent in side panel and also was sufficiently large and solid enough to crimp/bend the io shield area and also the face-plate of the PSU. This would explain why no real damage to the internal components but huge damage to all of the exterior face-plating on the rear of chassis.
