    No chickens yet planning for next spring. Can baby chicks also use fermented feed??

    This may be a silly question, but do you just take this out on a plate for them every day? If you need to leave town for a couple days will they be okay on their dry food?

    Stretching chicken feed would be great. 👍👍

      Yesterday we walked outside with quite a bit of this stuff and they went WILD over it, I wish I would have filmed it 😂

    I have 16 birds and currently feed them pellets out of a big 7-8 gallon bucket with feeding ports. This means I only need to re-stock their food every 5-6 days.
    How do you actually feed this to your chickens? Hopefully it's better scaled than this video's example of a single pint poured into a big bowl!

      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому +2

      You can scale it to a bucket, barrel etc but it’s definitely meant more for daily feeding rather than feeding with ports that last a week or however long. We ferment enough every day to feed our flock

    So this is just for the scratch? Or do I put the layer pellets in there too?

    Peck and Scratch Feed is good quality, but the price is just too overwhelming. You are paying more for a 40lb bag where others brands almost as good sale 50lb bags for half the price.

      I get that, but those other brands also don’t have the nutrition. Definitely not something everyone can swing though!

    I mix very fine gravel with my feed. My chickens don’t have access to anything like pebbles, etc. Can I mix it in with the food and do this?

    I was feeding my chickens fermented food during the summer but the weather will soon be in the teens during the day so I switched them back to the dry food and they are hardly eating any of it. What should I do?? Thank you.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому +1

      If you want to switch them back to dry feed and they are being picky eaters and want the fermented feed, try to slowly add more and more dry food to your fermented feed over a week or so. Rather than switching them cold turkey you can slowly switch them and they may respond a little better to that!

    How does it double your feed? Mine still seem to eat almost as much. They do eat less but I don’t see it double.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому

      Have you tried taking the normal food you give them in a day, cutting it in half, fermenting it, and feeding it to them? Fermenting it stretches it quite a bit. If you keep feeding them they will keep eating though, that’s for sure!

    can you help me understand this if the fermented feed lasts longer do you feed them that every day or since it lasts longer you feed them every other day or since the feed doubles in size you wouldn't have to feed them as much since their stomach get filled much quicker? Because I tried the fermented feed about a half bucket every day and it costs me the same money so idk if I'm doing it wrong or if my brain can't understand it and I'm missing something

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому +3

      So when you ferment it you feed them less than you normally would with fry food. Take the amount of dry food you would normally feed them, ferment that, and then feed it to them after a couple days. The food expands and becomes more nutritious so you don’t need to feed them as much. What we do is we keep a 3 day cycle going so we always have a brand new start, one in process, and one finishing up to feed the birds. We pretty much start one batch daily!

  • @raymurphy8133
    @raymurphy8133 10 місяців тому +1

    Quick question. Do you need to ferment feed fresh for each day, obviously three days in advance or can it be fermented and then used over a number of days. Thanks, Ray

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому

      I’m sure you could spread it out over a few days, but you will hit a point where the ferment goes bad since it’s more of an open air fermentation. It wouldn’t hurt to maybe start a batch every other day or every 3 days and then feed from those batches for 2-3 days. As long as it doesn’t start to stink you should be good! Keep everything clean and sanitary and give it a good sniff test and you’ll be good!

    My chickens don't care for this feed. I do ferment the pellets they like but it doesn't stretch the feed at all.

    Add water to granular feed. Almost no waste, and the birds are excited when I feed them. I haven’t tried fermenting.

    When I go to scratch and peck I can’t find the item you are showing. They have organic but it’s all compressed pellets. Can you help me find what you are showing?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому

      It should say “organic layer crumbles” and then if you go down into the details you’ll see the 16% protein. I think they have an 18% too if I remember right!
      Make sure you’re in the “chickens and ducks” section as well!

      to white pepper farms,....in the video, you say any chickens feed is suitable. but that's pretty broad. and you said thsi isn't pellets, which is clear, your feed was all whole grains, but much i'd not most chicken feed
      IS pellets.
      so would you be still soaking your pelleted feed?? .
      I can't imagine that would turn out well.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому +1

      @helloshiny8475 you definitely can! It turns into a mushy substance but the process works the same! Just dump it into a dish for them and they will love it. I think the only feed you’d want to steer away from is medicated feed. Besides medicated you can use any normal chicken feed. Might even be able to use medicated.. I just wouldn’t 😂

    How long does it keep?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  10 місяців тому

      That’s a good question, you’ll definitely hit a point that it goes bad. We start one new batch every day and that allows us to just keep cycling it. I honestly don’t know how long it would last, I’m sorry! We make just enough to feed daily!
