    This is not a joke-🏴‍☠️
Do you know why pirates wear a eyepatch?
It’s because when they take over another ship, it’s usually in the daytime and when they have to go inside the ship it’s very dark.
So they would swap the patch to the other eye and the eye that was covered is now acclimated to the dark,
    it’s was like night vision!

Rum was a great antiseptic. And there were some dental precautions taken. Europeans did not have a severe problem with tooth decay until after the sugar trade (honey and refined sugar beet were the preferred sources before that) ...and pirates were soon to learn about dental issues and pain/inflammation. In fact they did use seaweed and alcohol to brush out residue and foul odors from their mouth. They were often drenched with storm rain and often used spices to mask odors....(bay rum for example)...but generally were more well washed than landlubbers.

Not a whole lot of what was mentioned in this video actually applied exclusively to pirates, most of what was mentioned applied to all sailors during this time period. The only real difference between life on a pirate ship and life on a navy ship was that officers lived better and pirates typically elected their captains. But sailors aboard navy ships suffered from many of the same problems that their pirate counterparts did, got paid less, and often faced harsh discipline for any infractions.

Anytime even pre 1950 was a whole different ballgame, and I'n not referring to not having the comforts like big screen tv's I am talking about just earning a living, being treated in a fair manner, all of the wars (which really are a living hell), polio, etc etc. At almost 52 I think about this stuff and am blown away at how soft so many of our 20 and 30 somethings are and how they take so much for granted, and feel that so many things are their "right", (which they are NOT), etc etc. In just the 70s and 80s we were brought up with the general rule that "if you want it you will have to earn it", and even high school stoners that took 4 classes of wood or auto shop knew they would be blue collar guy's for blue collar pay. Now our system say's "anyone can go to College" and a laundry list of other BS that the system expects the tax payers to just pay for. I love my Country 100%, but I believe the lack of tough love is not helping things.
