  • Plastics have become a central part of our lives, from their use in agriculture to the convenience they provide in single-use packaging. However, the mismanagement of plastic can result in significant environmental and economic impacts. The CSIR has built a considerable capability to help address the plastic issue in South Africa, from technology and laboratory testing, unlocking high-value end-use markets through innovation, the application of modeling capabilities to inform product choice, to evidence-based strategy development. We explore the role of bioplastics in addressing the plastic issue in South Africa.
    About the CSIR:
The CSIR, an entity of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organisations in Africa. Constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1945 as a science council, the CSIR undertakes directed and multidisciplinary research and technological innovation and industrial and scientific development to improve the quality of life of all South Africans.
