My brother's signature work shirts were Hawaiian prints, but constructed with the wrong side of the fabric on the outside. He was a rocket scientist for the Navy. I think I'd like to try a memory quilt. That's kinda recycling.
I use Doyg Leko's ruler a lot. It has made my life sew much easier. When I have done cross stitch in the past I used a small crochet hook to weave the ends of my thread. Yes, I wear my threads on my clothes too. 😆
When I have a cross stitch project with a border around it, I like to try finishing the whole border first and then just fill in the center parts. That way I am motivated to get the border done since I really enjoy working on the center.
For your cross stitch border, the trick to carrying threads across, is to leave your threaded needle on the top of the fabric. Just stop stitching that last cross, put the treaded needle on your needle minder. When it's time for that color again, finish that last cross, carry the thread to the next section and you're on your way. It's muc easier than stopping and starting all those threads. Hope that helps.
I do alot of projects for Christmas, then get them out 1 by 1 and finish them. Love your projects. Am in the process of finding your wreath tutorial to make a couple of them for gifts. Thank you for all you do!!!
We recently purchased a king size sleep number bed but with twin sides so my husband and I can adjust separately. So now I plan to pull out my old king sheets and use them for backings or to cut up for quilts! I’ll have SO MUCH FABRIC STASH!
I cut up a favorite dress of my grandmother's - one we all remember her wearing - and included some of the fabric in baby quilts for what would have been her great-great grandchildren. Made those quilts extra special.
Love you, love listening to all your projects. I’m starting Scrappiness is Happiness. You got me started on it. And I’m heading to the calendar to see what I will join.
I'm amazed at what you get accomplished! Secret Lives of Color borders are just perfect, and Sweater Weather is coming along very nicely. I have too many projects ongoing right now but I think I need to add SW to my future list. 😉 Your pink Oliso iron looks so clean. My pretty pink one decided to grunt and stick in the down position and it won't heat up anymore.
I love the alphabet fabric as a border on that quilt - and, yes, the pink just sets it apart. I’m also loving the Sweater Weather quilt. 95 projects!! Wow! No wonder I can’t keep up. I have 2 of your quilts at the Longarmer and a third goes this week. I’ll have to count but I’m guessing that I may have 1/3 or less of your number of projects for the year - and I’m retired and happily sewing up a storm.
Good golly!!!! 95 projects for one year?!?!?! I thought I was doing good with the 20 that I will have done completely by year end. You definitely are an inspiration for me. Thank you!!!
You do better than me! I got 4 or 5 tops done, to of which I quilted on my home machine. Other 3 were QOVs so our longarmer did them. (One was awarded to a veteran recently.)
I am loving the alphabet fabric for the Secret Lives quilt! Do you remember that I made a plan last week for my Christmas flying geese? Well, I am already on the struggle bus. 🙃 Sometimes it's hard to sew after the sun goes down after a crazy preschool day.
@@PatSloan I try, but sometimes the kitties just want and need to play. I have found that it's easier to hand quilt or bind at night instead of piecing. I am almost ready to do some hand quilting on a different quilt. 15 minutes tonight will do it, if I am not waylaid by cats!
I've been hitting the thrift stores for cotton shirts and sheets. I am so "proud" of myself when I am cutting them up. And I also buy new flannel sheets on sale each winter to use as backings. Thank you
Sometimes, I just have to make up my mind to get through it and I sit down and plan for a finish. I think making the decision to get through with it is the hardest. Once I make up my mind and get a plan, it seems to take away the dread of it and most of the time I am well pleased with my finish, I'm always talking myself through stuff.
I make shopping bags for charity and use upcycled fabrics for the linings. Some fabrics are like new and can be used for the outside as well. Loving the progress of the *secret lives* 😍
After seeing your sweater weather blocks (put together on your board ) that really is going to turn out really pretty!!!♡♡♡♡ I don't have that many light background fabrics, ( what if I used white corner stones and reds and greens for the blocks)?
I have only used pockets off jeans for a pocket on a toy and fabric from a Halloween costume (Dorothy of Oz) is still being cut up. The costume fabric is really very lightweight, so not quilting cotton. Should I use interfacing with it? We have used patches from uniforms onto quilts.
I am also working on sweater weather…I counted last night and I have made 48 units!,, my daughter said not to use my flamingo fabric! But I said “ if Pat Sloan can use flamingos so can I!!! “😂😂😂
@pat Sloan how different is flannel from quilting cotton to sew with? I’m a beginner, have yet to make a quilt, been working on hst, flying geese etc I’d like to make a quilt for my sister and put a piece of our moms flannel pjs on the back, should I use a stabilizer on that piece?
I've used lots of flannel in quilts with no issues. If the fabric is really lightweight, and especially a plaid, use a very lightweight interfacing o. It before cutting. Use a slightly shorter machine stitch for sewing and watch for fraying. Usually if you use a spray starch first, it will keep things under control
Yes, of course I have to make a plan to be sure I complete a project. I once did cross stitch Christmas stockings for my mother- & father-in-law. I made sure to work on them in parallel because if I completely finished one before starting the second one, it would be hardr for me to get it done. I needed to be really finished with the project when I did the last little bit..
My brother's signature work shirts were Hawaiian prints, but constructed with the wrong side of the fabric on the outside. He was a rocket scientist for the Navy. I think I'd like to try a memory quilt. That's kinda recycling.
I loved seeing the thread on your sweater. Jenny Doan calls those quilters jewelry. 😁
Lol! That’s exactly what I call it… bribing myself. Or rewarding myself for getting the “less fun” done. Whatever works. Ha!
I talk to myself through doing projects all the time. lol.
I use Doyg Leko's ruler a lot. It has made my life sew much easier. When I have done cross stitch in the past I used a small crochet hook to weave the ends of my thread. Yes, I wear my threads on my clothes too. 😆
That alphabet border on the Secret Lives of Color really makes it. Your projects are so pretty, love sweater weather too!
thank you!
How are you going to cram that fabric from the sweater weather bin into those apparetly already full light bins? Lol!
My mother was the queen of recycling. She made things look like she meant to do that.

Thanks for the info!
Pat, your comment about hubby's shirt too funny. I look at shirts on men, and think fun fabric for a quilt. 🥰
exactly!

Oid sheets for the stash builder win! 😀
We have the same bed and I've done the same with our old sheets. Did make an oversized king quilt (120 x 120) though for on top of both sides.
I cut up a favorite dress of my grandmother's - one we all remember her wearing - and included some of the fabric in baby quilts for what would have been her great-great grandchildren. Made those quilts extra special.
that is so sweet!
I love the sweater weather block, so versitile. And the little pops of color are great.
Love you, love listening to all your projects. I’m starting Scrappiness is Happiness. You got me started on it. And I’m heading to the calendar to see what I will join.
Your Secret Lives of Color quilt is absolutely beautiful 😍
I'm waiting on my copy of the book.

I’ve found and have enjoy watching The Catbird Quilts. She uses mens shirts. Fun video to watch.
Just hearing the number of your projects makes me anxious!
you don't have to do them all
Morning Pat. You are such a great teacher
You are so organized. I try so hard and it is just a nightmare.
I am loving the alphabet fabric for the Secret Lives quilt! Do you remember that I made a plan last week for my Christmas flying geese? Well, I am already on the struggle bus. 🙃 Sometimes it's hard to sew after the sun goes down after a crazy preschool day.
set a time and tell yourself you will just do 15 minutes. then stop if you have to
I set a timer often.

That's a great idea!
I’m so glad you settled on the alphabet fabric. It just feels right.
it does!
You inspire me so much! I want to get the sweater weather book and start my own version of this quilt! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks for sharing with us as you it does help a lot
Thanks Pat!
Oh, a selvedge of alphabet fabric left over for the red zinger!
Thank you 💞
thanks Pat, I enjoy your thought process ofcworking thru your projects. you give me so many ideas and options.
You are so welcome
I have started measuring my finished top and cutting strips accordingly. Otherwise I have so much left over.
Good Morning!😃
After seeing your sweater weather blocks (put together on your board ) that really is going to turn out really pretty!!!♡♡♡♡ I don't have that many light background fabrics, ( what if I used white corner stones and reds and greens for the blocks)?
Reverse the fabric. Colored for large rectangles and lights for corner squares. Make it scrappy or all one color.
thank you! you can definitely use colors for the rectangles and white/black for the corners
I use a very lightweight interfacing on those types of fabric in quilts. Works great!
I am also working on sweater weather…I counted last night and I have made 48 units!,, my daughter said not to use my flamingo fabric! But I said “ if Pat Sloan can use flamingos so can I!!! “😂😂😂
that is great!!
I need the directions for the size of these blocks.
Did you sew your border seams straight across or angle them on the alphabet fabric? Love the way it turned out! Thanks for the inspirations !
straight across
My book isn’t here yet :( impatiently waiting
❤❤❤

@@TLStitches ty so much for taking the time to help me out this old lady beginner appreciates you very much. Have a wonderful day
Can you tell me how large is the rectangle and the corner squares.
Sandra you have to purchase the book - here is the link shrsl.com/3r14m

Does anyone know the name of the quilt that is on the back wall of Pats studio. It’s the opposite wall of her design wall.
i do! it is linked under every video, here it is again ::Fall Quilt behind is in the layer cake book at shrsl.com/3r55s called birthday cake
Thank you
What do you do with your stickers?
put them on journals, letters to friends, on containers
What size is the sweater weather blocks?
you have to purchase the book go to shrsl.com/3r14m
Why not trim and then press?
Like I show you in the video, if you are not 100% on your seam then your block size will be wrong if you do it that way
