  • The finest war comic of all time. Meticulously researched and imaginatively created by both Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun for the 1980's comic, 'Battle', Charley's War remains as the gold standard for war comic storytelling.

Thank you so much. I really love how it stands up so well today. The true meaning of 'timeless classic'.

I read every one of those. I remember them all to be honest - Charleys War, Jhonny Red at Stalingrad, The General Dies at Dawn and then on to 2000AD for Rogue Trooper and the Ballad of Halo Jones to name a fraction. I even remember hating Rick Random!!! Man they were great stories and fantastic comic strips. Intellegent stories that knocked the socks of anything Marvell...

In the 80s, my ex-squaddie, Thatcher-loving dad bought this comic for me on a regular basis. He thought he was moulding me into a patriotic flag waver. Little did he know, Pat Mills was turning me into a pacifist, socialist, republican with a grudge against the ruling class. The comic is truly a masterpiece. It had a profound effect on me and gave me a lifelong fascination with WW1. Anyone else remember the Biggles books?

Didn't read the Biggles books, it was all comics for me lol I recently dug up my old Warlord and Bullet stuff, along with Action and 2000AD I didn't have time for books, it seems...🤣

I remember Charlie's war from Battle and Eagle and Battle back in the mid late 80s

I find it so amazing that this story and character has resonated for so many people, even if you 'grew up' and never read comics again lol

The fact that these comics were so widely distributed means that a lot of people have fond memories of Battle (and lots of other stuff tbf) and outside of 2000AD, Charley's War was the best for me.

One of my favourite stories in my favourite comic, but if I remember correctly Charley's War continued on into Britain's involvement in the Russian Civil war in 1919 -1920. I remember as a kid staring at the pictures for ages mesmorised by the details but not realising it was a work of art until I became an adult. Battle was a great comic and so was Battle/Action when they amalgamated but Battle/ActionForce was the beginning of the end for me, it started to become childish with stories based on toy figures.

For sure. The glory day were def gone by then. I still can't quite believe how powerfully CW stands up now. Superb.
