- In my opinion this is either one of the best, or the best, performances of this song after Elton had his throat surgery in 1987. It comes from the October 17, 1988 concert at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The reason it stands out to me is that he hits every high note that he chose to include in the song post surgery, including the falsettos and they all sound good/strong, he has a generally good energy and spirit, and he sings the song mostly clean without much growling or angry birding. Overall the cleanest performance I've heard of the song after he had the surgery on his vocal cords!
What do you think?
Performance aside, the moment I love the most in this version is how the audience all cheered for him after he sang the first falsetto/head tone in "shine the light' phrase.
Definitely the best thing about eltons 88-89 concerts, When Elton lets loose and the crowds go wild
well actually , in 86 when elton sounded terrible people still cheered . Only elton can give that energy .
This is a great performance but in my opinion, my favourite performance post surgery is on the October 20th, where he attempts and succeeds with 6 yes I dos' at the end, and all the shine a light falsettos as well. This being the link to that performance. -> ua-cam.com/video/BmkPgtZxLu0/v-deo.html
Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami are great contenders but I'll have to agree with you!
All of those come SUPER close, the thing that put this one above them is the presence of ALL Bb4’s at the end on the “Yes I Do!”s, and he does do this on a handful of the October 1988 shows but this one is the only one where we have a clean voiced and fully functional Elton.
Chicago for me is a nearly perfect post surgery version but he does the G4 phrasing at the end instead. Otherwise it’s a major contender for #1.
@@MrAccount3 mhm, he only did all of the falsetto's once in 1989 in Lyon but they sounded weak so he quit using them.
You guys are super wonky on this topic, and I LOVE IT!
@@karmafrog1 we are elton fans , we know our stuff .
@@Bruh1986. Gonna be doing a deep-dive Elton thang on my channel in a few weeks, I'll try to remember to come back and bug you dudes about it!
i really like the growling tbh, never understood peoples problem with it
Maybe when it was out of control during some shows, such as Philadelphia on 4/5th October where his voice was blown but he still belted falsetto's.
@@bluerazor7049 u can't belt falsetto's , he was hitting those notes in chest voice . He could actually hit a C5 in chest voice till about 1990 I think .
@@Bruh1986. Probably till 1998 or 1994/1995. His voice didn’t sound like 1979 anymore by then!
his tone sounds ragged, the best versions are from two nights in miami and columbia, which by his energy and delivery sound like strong 86 us shows and even though he doesn't go for all the notes there his tone and flexibility is much better
