First time taking up a Maule M-9 for a quick trip around the pattern. Quite different than my J-3

- My Friend Alec stopped by with his Maule for some photo's and Video for his Flight School (Northeast Aviation). He primarily does Seaplane training in it so I wanted to get some time in it before the floats go back on. (After Sun N Fun). The acceleration and Climb rate is really really impressive. The best part is you can carry people, Gas, and luggage all at the same time, lol. I'll be back in this place when it's on floats up in Maine later this summer
I own and fly a 63 Maule M4. Sinks like a brick when you want it to. Awesome company.
I love your videos and I love the Maule! Tell your buddy that if he wants to avoid the tailwheel shimmy, don’t be so aggressive on the up elevator after touchdown. He’s really hauling back on it while he’s still going pretty fast, and that’s pushing down really hard on the tail. That downforce will drive the axis of the tailwheel pivot way forward of vertical, and ANY tailwheel will shimmy with that geometry, like a loose wheel on a shopping cart. Tell him to ease up on it… just let the tailwheel settle, don’t pin it so much. It’ll steer a lot better if it isn’t shimmying! If that doesn’t help, make sure the pivot axis is vertical or a little aft of vertical at rest. I.E., the leaf springs haven’t sagged at all. If that still doesn’t do it, he may need to take some slack out of those chains. Signed, a guy who’s spent a lot of time chasing tailwheel shimmies!
Thank you! Will absolutely pass it along! Appreciate it!
One of the best videos I’ve seen for teaching young people about tail wheel aircraft with the larger tires. It’s above my skill level for sure! Not for beginners without the competent instructor
You simply are not used to a vernier throttle. Actually they are in many airplanes, and I LOVE it! The silver middle button goes to the palm of my hand. And I love to TWIST the throttle, for fine tuning!!
Yeah, I think I’m just used to the Cub. Towards the end I quickly got used to it
For setting cruise power and fine adjustments I would agree with you, however they can be hard to use, especially for primary students.
Haha. I understand the frustration but I grew up with a vernier throttle so I was getting into trouble accidentally tightening the friction lock on the throttles of my current planes. I’m used to it now, but I miss the fine adjustment with the vernier. (I understand the vernier is a real pain when you need to jockey in formation, but I haven’t done that in decades.)
Added a Vernier Throttle and Mixture to my 1971 M4-220 and Love 'em. Makes fine-tuning easy. ^v^
Nothing beats the good ole J-3 !
Plane and Simple !!!
It really is nice, nothing to look at or do but Fly it!
Great job. I flly a Maule M7. Cross country and Bush flying all in one, Love it.
Gorgeous aircraft, love the big vertical stab
It unfortunately was in Northeast East Philly (On Amphib Floats) a few weeks ago when a line of weather came through and it tipped over and the wing collapsed. Hopefully back in business soon
Great videography, as always. Beautiful plane.
Thank you! Appreciate it
I got my Private and Instrument in a Maule years ago. Mx7-160 but it still keep you honest with your feet. I loved every minute of it… made me a heck of a tailwheel pilot. Gave me such a good feel for TW I started flying DC3’s at 1,100 hours total time.
I have about .2 in a DC-3 and it was AWESOME
My passion for aviation started in Maules. It WILL be next plane!
They really seem to do EVERYTHING well.
Such a gorgeous plane. We will be shopping for one next year.
I think about all the places I’d love to fly to and camp and the Maule really does check off every single box…
That is one of my favorite airplanes.
I love the little ducky and the hula girl 😂
An FBO had a tri-gear and a taildragger version for lessons and rental. I tried getting my tailwheel endorsement there. What a beast. The one I flew was an accident waiting to happen. I figure there must have been something wrong with it since otherwise everyone's lauding these planes as sensational. Went somewhere else for the signoff and to my knowledge no one else checked out to rent it either.
I have since checked out in a J-3, Super Cub, Super Decathlon, Citabria, Husky, Zlin, oh and a Stearman, I found them to be pussycats all.
good fly every time for you and nice sunday
Learned tailwheel in a Luscombe, it had that dreaded throttle. Got into a Maule M4 and it was second nature. Definitely didn’t like it at first, but it’s nice for fine tuning that MP/RPM.
My buddy has an 8E, beautiful plane but humbles me every time, lol.
@@Bananasssssssss That’s what all the “old timers” said: “Learn to fly a Luscombe, you’ll be able to fly anything.” Don’t think they’re wrong. 😂
The spring gear legs make a difference if you come in a touch down to much it will put you back into the saddle to go around because I’ve done it in one !! 😊
I’ve got a couple videos of it doing just that 😂
Flying from the right seat is so much different but better you can learn also because of how much forgiving it is to landing on a grass runway makes it easier to rolling it on like butter and your directional control and feet alive.
If I was close enough where you live at I could show you more about this Mauler
Very nice looking plane 👍🏻👍🏾
Talking about looking; for decades I advocate not to wear those look-out limiting devices (baseball caps) in any cockpit, especially in general aviation infested airspaces.
Use a non irritating sun lotion and good sunglasses.
Safety before fun and good looks 😇
A friction lock throttle is an option if you prefer that over a vernier throttle.
Truth be told, I got used to it after flying it a bit
Looks like a blast
Jealous about that useful load for sure. Odd question: Are there no shoulder harnesses? In a bush configuration I'd be sporting four points. Another great video Joe. Thanks.
It does! I need to get better at wearing them. Even in the Cub. And thank you! Appreciate it. Going to start cranking out weekly videos if I can
Very good useful load for sure.
What is the cabin width?
Comments for Maule videos!! Love it!
The Useful Load is impressive, only 120lb shy of the Bearhawk 5.
I would love a Maule for getting down to the ranch. Perhaps one day.
Hi Joe, Just Subscribed and came over from Instagram. Nice video, I am down in Maryland at W48 with a RV-8 and know one of your co-workers (JJ). I hope to meet you at a local fly in.
Thanks Mark! I hope to venture out this summer a little more than my Usual spots!
I own an M7/9 and use full flap every time to land as slow as possible. These Maule's like to be slow, the landings are butter if you can ballast the plane aft and land slow. Also, we put a friction lock throttle in... hate that button style.
M5 loves full flaps too. Also not sure why these guys didn’t use shoulder harnesses 😮
Yeah I need to get better at that. Probably because I’m so used to not having them in my Cub
I flew a Bonanza with one of those throttles. Definitely different after flying a 172 with the traditional push/pull style for a few hundred hours. It made landing interesting for a little bit.
I’m so used to having to keep my
Hand on Cub throttle or it pretty much vibrates itself to idle 😂
A sic plane, my Champ is jealous
My Cub feels incredibly inadequate, lol
I was hoping you would slip it! I love slipping my Maule.
I should have. 😂
I really need to move to the States…
I thought this was the rc FMS Maule for a sec lmao
Haha it does have the exact Scheme 😂
Damn thats a hefty useable load! Beast
Can basically carry my Cub 😂
Nice but I prefer the Cub
Is this his own field? Just noticed there were no radio calls. The Maule is a beast. Love the Piper Hershey Bar wing and big flaps and 4 doors!
Allen Airstrip 3NJ9
If you been in aviation for a while you know that is standard throttle for high performance aircraft chech out some your local Cessnas etc
Been flying since ‘96 and first time I’ve seen it, lol. One other HP prop plane Ive flown was a 182 and didn’t have it but I’m going to look around at airport. Curious how many have them.
On another note, my tail wheel shimmy was fixed when I switched to a Scott tail wheel. If you get a shimmy a little forward pressure on the stick takes some pressure off and helps
I Love my Scott on my Cub
Little caption...we used checklists but edited out....... lol. Good call otherwise faa would be knocking at your door next morning
Can never be too safe 😂😂 CYA always
I cannot stand the vernier throttle. Flown many airplanes with them and I hate it. I can see how people would like them for fine adjustments. Just not for me. Awesome airplane otherwise. Always wanted a maule.
They make a vernier throttle without the button. You can just push pull and twist for fine adjustments. Best of both worlds….
A friction lock throttle is an option if you prefer it over a vernier throttle.
I’ll fly along with you
OMG at 0:26 your headset cord! How can you sleep at night? :) Really good video. I have a few hours in Maules. Cool planes, I don't fit!
😂😂
I thought you were gonna say was one thing that you didn’t like was your landings!
I didn’t wasnt a fan of that either 😂
did I just see you & your plane on Trent Palmers post? :)
I dunno! Maybe? (Would be cool, lol) Have a link?! 😁
@@Bananasssssssss
My bad , it was another Maule but same colours as yours :)
Looks nice

FWIW: My shimmy is almost completely caused by low pressure in the tailwheel.
Great airplanes !! Do they still have the negative 7 deg. flaps for increasing cruse speed.
Yes they do!
Was that a bee flying around in there with you guys? 5:21
Yes, yes in fact it was 😂😂
Not used to the knobs? lol
@@Lee-qp6gf lol, not that style 😂
Lock on the throttle is fully dangerous, what's the benefit?
Just keeps it where you set it, instead of vibrating out of position
Turn Coordinator already dead?
Nah it worked
Did you say photo ship......Hmmmm !!
IFR GPS but no gyros? AI or heading indicator?
Yup! No attitude indicator, lol. It does have a “bomb” AHRS thing on the wing though
Where in Jersey are you guys and can I hitch a ride?
Yup! Flying W (N14)
That thing sounds mean
It really does!
Right hand should be on the throttle for t/o….🤨
The Maule was the worst plane I have ever flown…. Just horrible…. I am too tall for this playmobile plane !!! Only Hobbits fit in this plane. And the controls….. OMG the design team must have been nerds, the plane is horrible to control. The stickforces gave me the rest. Simple to fly, easy to land , almost no groundloop tendency! It i don’t want one not even for free
What have you been flying I've been flying maules for 40 years among other things for a living and I'm 6' 2" 260 lbs don't have any problems with it 4000 plus hrs in them love the cargo doors it'll haul anything you can get thu the doors
