Swallowing or deglutition is the process by which the food passes through the mouth through the pharynx and into the esophagus. As simple as it may seem to healthy people, swallowing is in fact a very complex action that requires an extremely precise coordination with breathing. Both of these processes share the same entrance : the pharynx. Failed coordinatio results in chocking or pulmonary aspiration. Swallowing involves over 20 muscels of the mouth, throat and esophagus which are controlled by several cortical areas and by the swallowing centers in the brain stem (tronco cerebrale). The brain communicates with the muscles through several cranial nerves. Swallowing consists of 3 phases : oral/buccal phase : this is the voluntary part of swallowing, the food is moistened with saliva and chewed, food bolus is formed and the tongue pushes it to the back of the throat (the pharynx). This process is under neural control of several areas of cerebral cortex including the motor cortex. pharyngeal phase : starts with stimulation of tactile receptors in the oropharynx by the food bolus. The swallow reflex is initiated and is under involuntary neuromuscular control. The following actions are taken to ensure the passage of food or drink into the esophagus : - the tongue blocks the oral cavity to prevent food from going back to the mouth - the soft palate blocs entry to the nasal cavity - the vocal folds close to protect the airway to the lungs. The larynx is pulled up with the epiglottis flipping over covering the entry to the traches. This is the most important step since entry of food or drink into the lungs may potentially be life threatening. - the upper esophageal sphincter opens to allow passag to the esophagus. esophageal phase : the food bolus is propelled down the esophagus by peristalsis - a wave of muscular contraction that pushes the bolus ahead of it. The larynx moves down back to original position.

Yesterday, at work (assembly line) I attempted to quickly use my albuterol inhaler... I didn't check it for debris. Took a big puff, something blocked my airway. I thought it was a tiny piece of "Lifesaver" candy. I hustled off the line to handle this (away from 50 people), though, I kept my eye on a friend, just in case I needed the Heimlich. One big cough and out comes a finger cot. They're worn on fingers... they look like little condoms. Wow... that was frightening. Hope, I learned my lesson: never, ever be too busy to check the inhaler for debris. I wonder how many people have died this way... there ought to be a statistic out there about it. Thx for listening. And, thanx for this video... I was trying to get a better idea of what physiologically happens during choking; this was helpful.
Sadly, there are a number of additional steps that occur that are not shown in this video, does not show the link between additional following mouthfuls triggering movement further down the throat. This would be more helpful for those dealing with swallowing difficulties if it did.
Is this deglutition marvel beyond computational analysis? That is, the involvement of all these muscles, especially during the critical phase of deglutition, the closure of the larynx by the epiglotis, whose actions are mostly involuntary, be one day elucidated? Could neuroscientist draw a detailed neuronal pathway for the involved cranial nerves impulses, and from the regions of the cortex, as well? I’m just intrigued, astounded, as to how natural selection used the vehicle of waves to accomplish many, if not all, of its functions: this deglutition wave, the peristaltic waves in the esophagus and colons, the wave of the heart function during systole, etc, etc, etc.
LOL! I'm here because I'm deathly afraid of swallowing pills. Now that I know that the epiglottis folds downward and not upward as I'd thought, I now feel a little better... just a little.
After my throat was severely injured by anaesthetists I asked my GP where my oesophagus was - he just pointed in the general direction of my upper chest & then swiftly moved onto another subject. The medics & hospital lied & covered up my injuries so my throat was left very painful & infected for a year & my neck was injured & a new lump in front of my throat & big squeaks when I swallowed liquids & clicks from inside my throat. After 15 years I'm left with difficulty swallowing: things get stuck as they go down (small tablets, nuts, buts of apple etc.) and sometimes they go down the wrong way and I choke & have to cough to try to get them out. Sometimes when I turn my head the bit of bone or cartilage?) they broke in the front of my throat near my voicebox clicks & moves and the whole front & right side of my throat really aches sometimes. For a long time I had tiny red dots down the front right side of my neck but my GP took no notice of any of this and refused to help me get info from the NHS hospital here in the UK. The anaesthetists got away with doing all this to me (and giving me brain damage & damaging my eyes/vision & wrecking my digestion and causing right inner thigh muscle to flop out and a weird 'hole' in my thigh muscle) but i'm left to live with all this 24/7. I've been left for 15 years to try to guess what they did to me & the damage they did to my body - they should have been honest & open and told me the truth right at the start. That's why I'm here: to try to learn again: due to my brain injury I keep forgetting) how swallowing works - IF this is true?!
You should try seek another professional from another hospital. The doctor from your previous treatment wouldn't even bother to look futher into your condition due to afraid of being sued for mistreatment. Though you can file a lawsuit against them if your condition are 100% caused by their action. Ofcourse with hard evidence such as your medical records treatment in hand. My advise mam, go to another hospital maybe different region as possible if you value your health.
First step seek primary continuum care from another clinic. After that ask for futher evaluation maybe from professional care on secondary continuum of care or if necessary Third. But from another hospital.
@@arnolddy9862 Yes, finally after a year I went on train to London (an hour away) to A&E at a hospital (because xmas lunch was wrecked coz swallowing hurt SO much=infection) but the junior female person got to me take sips of water & coz I I could swallow them (though it hurt lots) she decided my throat & swallowing were fine; she did a few neurological tests (to test for my brain damage) and one of them I couldn't do well at all but she announced I was fine, at end she wrote my GP a letter (gave me) saying everything was 'normal' and advising referral to local neurology. I went (before or after this, before I think) to my GP surgery & asked for very urgent appointment to address my severe throat infection but receptionist refused (no reason given): the woman at reception was SO condescending & weird; then I did a BP check (2 of them) on their machine close to reception and got 2 different readings when I told the same woman at reception both readings readings (I think I kept the read-out printed slips) she said something like "oh you're doing REALLY well" in nasty condescending tone of voice (as though I was a child), but I don't think she noted them down or her refusal to give me an appointment or why = according to copies of my medical records I was given later. That night (?) I felt SO ill & couldn't breathe properly & my throat felt a bit worse so in desperation next day (?) I asked the female doctor(?) if my throat would always be like this now (& clicking when I swallowed) and she answered icily "I don't know". They promised to arrange a barium swallow 'soon'(?) but i had to chase this and change my address to friends who lived in the area. The barium swallow (which maybe shouldn't have used barium because of infected+ throat/tongue?) was awful: the docs turned the screen away from me so I couldn't watch and although I choked (aspirated) one time they later announced it was 'normal' - and doc(?) I saw a bit later there ran through the images & announced "all normal" but skipped through them so fast I couldn't see or ask questions & didn't explain at all. He put same thin tube up my nose (nasoendoscopy = easy & NOT painful but my GP had tried to put me off for examination of my throat before all this by saying to me "you WON'T want a BIG TUBE PUT DOWN YOUR THROAT" & I said yes, I would, to get the TRUTH = this GP carried on like this & was SO pleased with himself... then I finally changed GP: way too late but maybe at same practice or other they'd have neglected/mistreated me the same as SOON as they contacted the hospital or heard HOW/BY WHOM I was injured = by doctors) and down into my throat & announced "all normal" & let my friend look at vocal cords = NOT where my throat (epiglottis/tongue?) was worst injured at this time, vocal cords were injured at start, don't know if anything DID she there then so much later. I asked to look but he said the tube wasn't long enough so I couldn't, I don't know if that was true. And lots more. I tried SO hard. It can be some kind of swallowing disorder, the best you can do is going to the doctor or consult a speech therapist, they can discard anything serious and give you management if necessary (sorry for my bad english, I hope you understood me :) )
I have an eating disorder, one day I woke up and I can't swallow food, my tongue goes down my throat but I don't swallow and I choke, I've already learned to choke but I can't swallow solid food, I have to eat very calmly and drink water before swallowing to dilute everything, the doctors can't find anything, maybe it's for someone was that so?

This is kinda scary question to ask ...."I been sick awhile they told me it was BRONCHITIS but im not coughing much anymore but when I sleep I suddenly get up Gasping for Air as if Im choking" it scares me alot not enuff to even go to sleep anymore
You may want to do a lung function test. If it's not the lung, you may have sleep apnea, you may want to see a doctor - an oral surgeon/dentist, for proper diagnosis. We have some info on sleep apnea in this video : ua-cam.com/video/za4tDIyd3fg/v-deo.html
The pharynx functions as a passageway for air and food, provides resonating chambers for speech sounds, and houses the tonsils which participate in immunological responses to foreign invaders.
I was coughing for as long as I could remember over 12 years now I have try all kind of things and I had all kind if test done but I still have the problem can anyone related to this
i have this problem whenever eating the thing is i can SWALLOW but the part where the muscles pushes the food to the esophagus i CHOKE is it because of acidity(acid reflux) or?? please this is my first time this has come to me it has stopped but then it has come again help anyone please?
+xodemifan1xo You should see a doctor, i dont think anyone would be able to help effectively just by your description, you need to be looked at. Good luck!

Behaviour therapist
Charles Shamash it is impossible as it is a natural reaction
Process of swallowing takes less than 6sec . Plus the body blocks the air passage way so there is no way u get a food particle in ur. Mouth avoid talking and laughing too much when lu eat , drink water with ur food too , that’ll help , I had this feeling too but know since I’m doing Mbbs I now know that it’s a fully Automatic process , automatically initiated

I am otherwise prefectly healthy 42 year old male, have difficulty swallowing SALIVA only , 100% normal when eating food and 90% normal when drinking water. What could be wrong with me?
It can be some kind of swallowing disorder, the best you can do is going to the doctor or consult a speech therapist, they can discard anything serious and give you management if necessary (sorry for my bad english, I hope you understood me :) )
I have an eating disorder, one day I woke up and I can't swallow food, my tongue goes down my throat but I don't swallow and I choke, I've already learned to choke but I can't swallow solid food, I have to eat very calmly and drink water before swallowing to dilute everything, the doctors can't find anything, maybe it's for someone was that so?

You may want to do a lung function test. If it's not the lung, you may have sleep apnea, you may want to see a doctor - an oral surgeon/dentist, for proper diagnosis. We have some info on sleep apnea in this video : ua-cam.com/video/za4tDIyd3fg/v-deo.html

Larynx is a small tube that connects the pharynx to the trachea.

When I swallow food, the food is touching my uvula and I was choking for a second and it's irritating and it's weird
Nice sir
what the disease that we have to find this reflex?
What is pharynx role?
The pharynx functions as a passageway for air and food, provides resonating chambers for speech sounds, and houses the tonsils which participate in immunological responses to foreign invaders.

+xodemifan1xo You should see a doctor, i dont think anyone would be able to help effectively just by your description, you need to be looked at. Good luck!

When we are eating while talking the food enter into lungs and that wise we are coughing....
