Agnes Moorehead is my favorite character actress of all time. She was different in every role she played and amazing every time. She stole every scene she was in as Velma the dedicated housekeeper and that's saying a lot when you're working with all that talent. Agnes was nominated for the fourth time for Best Supporting Actress and I think she should have won but at least she was recognized. She was just too good to ignore.
I saw both this film and "Jane" when I was about 7 or 8 and was horrified (lol) Saw "Jane" again as an adult and happened to catch "Charlotte" just last year on the teevee. Such a great camp classic. Bette gives her usual stellar performance, Olivia de Havilland was all poise and elegance to Bette's 'diamond in the rough' and Agnes Moorhead, who I had only known from "Bewitched", was absolutely mesmerizing. (and was delighted to find out afterwards that Olivia de Havilland was a dear friend who greatly admired and adored the divine MIss Davis) :) (and another fantastic review from the indomitable Monsieur Hayes!!) 🤗
This was a great Actress .... she knew her part well ... I like the scene on the hospital steps when she meets Olivia ...." in the light of day " fantastic movie ...total top notch acting from all the cast .....Agnes M. was so great in her role as well ....she was playing with super stars
Word! What adds to the poignance is Mary Astor’s career was ruined by a sex scandal at the height of her fame and never really recovered. She’s talking about it as much as her downfall in the film. It’s heartbreaking
This was the creepiest movie I ever saw. I loved it more than all those horror movies I saw as a child. The actors, this day and time, can't hold a candle to those old timers.
Thank you Steve! I love your info and humor, especially the Vivien Leigh quote (hysterical!) gotta love the party scene at the beginning where the hair-dos from the roaring 20's look like a 60's episode of American Bandstand.
That combination of styles always drive sme a bit crazy. If you're gong to do a period picture, go all the way! Thanks for watching and Best Wishes; Steve
Great review, Steve. You're right about Mary Astor, she was the best. When you mentioned the supporting cast at the end, I thought for sure you would mention John Megna, the scene-stealing, little Dill Harris in "To Kill a Mockingbird", as this was his follow up movie. He appears at the beginning of the movie. John was Connie Stevens' brother.
I loved John Megna. He was Connie Steven's brothet. He was a wondeful actor who died of AIDS and when they do the "To Kill A Mockingbird " documentaries, they rarely give him his due. Thanks for watching!
I was about six years old when I first saw this movie in a Drive- in at night. I overheard Mother tell Dad that we (kids) would be asleep before anything scary happened. Then I HAD to STAY AWAKE! lol Perfect first movie memory !

I loved Mary Astor's character Miss Mayhew, and loved also Cecil Kellaway's compassion and kindness for Bette's Charlotte. Thanks for the review !

A big "thank you" for another wonderful movie review! You're incandescently happy when you tell us these behind the scenes stories and how the actors worked with or against each other. It's like you're sharing a Valentine of something you truly love, when the actors reach in and reveal complex feelings. Olivia DeHaviland was probably a better choice for Miriam. She's refined and beautiful (scandalously attractive in that evening gown) and so makes for a more effective villain.

Hook, line and( if you would only bring your particular joy to On Borrowed Time, another film that deserves your brightness and awareness )sinker, I"m in. Thanks Steve. Another GREAT, in depth review. I've seen this movie 10...15 times and I just listened to you word for word with my mouth opened... Like I've never seen it before. Ha ha ha. It's a GREAT film... So eerie and sad all Grey and old tattered, yellowed lace. That Agnes Morehead is THE FREAKIN BEST.... Just FANTASTIC! All of that dialog, so quick/fast OMGGGGGGGGGGGG! I also loved Cecil's character (he was the sweetest to her) and Mary Astor. I hated D'Havilland's FACE! You just want to SLAP HER good! Ha ha ha! THANKS AGAIN!

Thank you Steve for uploading new content! I'd be curious to hear what you have to say about the infamous shoot of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and the feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
I wonder if we'll ever see the footage shot with Joan Crawford. I've done web searches but I can't find it. I wonder if it even still exists. I love Olivia de Havilland and thought she did a great job as Miriam but I could see Joan Crawford knocking this performance out of the park.
dp20024 There are several publicity photos with Davis and Crawford with Bob Aldrich regarding Charlotte and there is a video of Miriam, played by Crawford coming to the mansion to help Charlotte. She gets out of the taxi, and lifts up her sunglasses to look at Charlotte, played by Davis. It is so historic!
You're so right, Steve; this movie is so much fun to watch!!! Everyone performed like they were enjoying chewing the scenery but Mary Astor & Agnes Moorehead are the voices of reason in it!!

Absolutely great review. Gave us all the mystery elements without destroying the surprises. I was a kid the first time I saw it and had to turn away at the gazebo scene and the staircase scene (without giving it away). There were other heart beating moments. But honestly, I didn’t understand the sub plot regarding Jewel and Miriam until I was an adult and had watched it several times. What a revelation. lol. Great movie! Hi Steve, I've just discovered you and I'm so happy! You are a delight and I find your presentation of my much-loved classic pictures most entertaining! Again, I feel that I have discovered a treasure in you! Thanks so much!!
Yay Steve (and of course Johnny)! Cute outro too! Saw this movie eons ago, had forgotten everything about it, what a great succinct rundown as usual and with the usual rich bits of context. I'll keep loving TOQ as long as you keep doing it! Mwah!
Well it's just a matter of preference I guess. De Havilland leaves me cold, personally. She might be good technically but for me there's always something missing. That being said, I've just watched Lady In A Cage (another role meant for Joan) and she was terrific in that.
I know. The atmsophere and cinematography are gorgeous. You can actually feel the heat and dampness. Aside from all the in house shenanigans, it's an incredible production and Aldrich at his best. I love Bette and Joan's work, but their respective egos always got the better of them. The trouble they both caused on this film and the huge cost of the delays, marked the end of a major studio giving either of them a first class production again. They always got in their own way. Thanks for watching and have a lovely, SAFE weekend. Steve
LOL! Dear Carlo; Thank you for your tremndous compliment from a tremendously grateful Tired Old Queeen at the Movie! Happy Summer and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
I saw this movie in 1964 when I was 10 years old, I had nightmares for years after. I’ve seen it dozens of times since and still remember how it scared me. I just love these hag movies, there was one with Debbie Reynolds and Shelly Winters that I would love to see you review.
Bruce Dern told this story about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford one was in her dressing room and she yelled out tell that C-Word I'm not coming out till she stops picking on me. The other responded by yelling tell her when she's ready to come out and work we'll be ready instead of waiting for her to quit putting salve on the sores on her back that she got from laying on it for 25 years so she could have a god damn career. God they hated each other lol..
Nice review, thank you. The lights are always shining on the Hudson sisters (of course, great movie too!) but I prefer this movie. The melancholy, the dark family secrets, the plot(s), just everything is top notch. French poster at the end of your review, nice! Merci
I love this one too. All those wonderful classic actresses together and to see Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor , who quietly gives them all a run for their money. Simply fabulous. However... I would have given ANYTHING to have seen the lost foortage that Joan shot. She actually filmed all her scenes without Bette. Wouldn't that have been fascinating.? Thanks for watching! Steve
Steve Hayes, have you seen the FX series Feud: Bette and Joan? It talks about the making of this film and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. It's excellent.
Typical '60's. They never depicted the hairstyles and make up of the period, which bothered me even then. But then, this always drove me a little crazy in most period films. The make up was inevitably from the period the film was made as opposed to historical accuracy.
She had a heart. She was also incredible savvy and used to the Hollywood game by then. She did win a Golden Globe, so she didn't come out empty handed. She should have had the Oscar for "Magnificent Ambersons" and for "Mrs Parkington" as well...so it goes.
Nothing beats Steve’s insight and insider knowledge on films. I wonder if today’s aging stars are open to doing low budget hagsploitation film. Sigourney Weaver, perhaps?
@@emjayay BETTE DAVIS: " I always thought that acting should be larger than life. That's why people went to the movies. To take themselves out of the every day occurances. Now everything is SO real." That was taken...not verbatum, mind you..from an interview she did with Playboy Magazine in the '70's. If you can find it, it's still one of the best interviews she ever gave. I think what it all comes down to, is that it's simply the nature of the art form. Ever changing, ever evolving and with technology where it is and where it's headed, who knows when they'll get to a point where they animate everything and there will be no more live actors? ...I hope not in my lifetime. . Have a great day and please stay safe. Best; Steve
I ❤ love Agnes Moorehead in this! And she almost didn’t get to play Velma. She had already signed the contract for Bewitched, and Screen Gems was getting ready to film the first season. There were delays on the set of Charlotte because of Joan Crawford feigning illness, and time was running out. Luckily for her, Olivia de Havilland stepped in, and they were able to complete Agnes’ scenes on time. Agnes was never too thrilled to be appearing in a weekly series. If it cost her the part of Velma, she would probably have been very bitter and angry. Thelma Ritter would have played Velma if Agnes could not.
TOQAM you could play all the parts in this film. You do it so well. Agnes Moorehead was superb. Franky, sometimes I wanna react to people just like she did
Agnes Morehead was a respected actress in Hollywood since her time with the Orson Welles players. But her role in this film showed how really versatile she was. I wonder why they thought to cast her for this particular role. The Oscar nomination was truly deserved.
Definitely! And I hoped she would have won. It was a tough catagory that year. There was no one like Aggie. Orson wellles thought she was the most versatile actress gh e ever worked with, In fact, he wanted her for the role that Edward G, Robinson had in "The Stranger". Thanks so much for watching. Best; Steve
I agree. I still think Agnes should have won the Oscar! Consumate actress. and Mary Astor, so lovely in her two scenes. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful, SAFE summer. Best Wishes; Steve
We used to watch this on the afternoon-movie TV show after school. It helped make me what I am today! Thanks for the review--I haven't seen this in years--must remedy that.
This film is a "must see" and a guilty pleasure. Thank you for not spoiling the ending.
Nothing guilty about it, this movie is WILD! It's better than "Jane"

Victor Buono was 26 years old here. You can see how young he is if you look.
What a picture this would have been if Joan had finished it... It's great, but knowing but could have been is torturous.
KAOS I think the reason it's so great and had so many stars of such talent is because Joan wasn't in it. When she left, the real talent came running!
KAOS I think Miriam wouldn't have been as effective if Joan played her. Joan was more known for playing evil bitches than Olivia was 😉
KAOS Olivia de Havilland can act rounds around Crawford and I can't imagine how she would make Miriam seem innocent in the beginning

I saw this movie in 1964 when I was 10 years old, I had nightmares for years after. I’ve seen it dozens of times since and still remember how it scared me. I just love these hag movies, there was one with Debbie Reynolds and Shelly Winters that I would love to see you review.
"What's The Matter With Helen?" Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out. Steve
Oh my god I so want to be baby Jane for Halloween!
Wow!
Hey, Steve! I just discovered your youtube page and am LOVING IT!!! When will you review "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"
It's on the list! Thanks!
It's the 1920s and at the party the girls all have Annettte Funicello hairstyles from a beach movie....
Typical '60's. They never depicted the hairstyles and make up of the period, which bothered me even then. But then, this always drove me a little crazy in most period films. The make up was inevitably from the period the film was made as opposed to historical accuracy.

I absolutely love your videos! You are Fabulous. thanks for all the stories!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Not winning the Oscar would have broken Moorehead's heart--had she had one. Love her!
Give 'em time.
It's really a different world of film, super high quality TV (like you have to pay for) and acting today.
Well, with films, it's always about lucky breaks.
Looking forward to watching and critiquing the movie
Alot of fun.
I am watching the parts you imitate Bette Davis in your videos!! love it
Oh Miguel< you are such a cutie! Thanks so much! I'm not so sure Bette would be all that thrilled, but...Happy Summer! Steve
Love all your videos and reviews so much. Im a big classic film fan. I'd love to see you do a review on Imitation of life starring Lana Turner
It's on my list! Thanks for watching!
TOQAM you could play all the parts in this film. You do it so well. Agnes Moorehead was superb. Franky, sometimes I wanna react to people just like she did
Take a tip from Agiie?Velma, it doesn;'t make you very popular. LOL!
Hilarious review! And yes, there's a ton of scene chewing from start to finish!
Best Vivien Leigh impression ever!
OMG! Thanks so much!
Thanks again for a brilliant presentation -- and performance ! -- Mr. Hayes. You should have been in the film!😄😍
LOL! Are you kiddin' ? They would have chewed me up and spit me out the first day! Steve
Cecil Kellaway was an Australian citizen born in Sth Africa
Thank you love your Vlogs !
Thanks for watching! Best wishes and stay SAFE! Steve
I love Betty Davis she was a great actresses acting as a good +bad person,I loved this film 10/10👌
Best; Steve
Loved the movie, who knew that was Agnes Morehead? And one of my favorite actors, Victor Buono: highly underrated, if you ask me.
Omg please do American Gothic (1988) would love to see your commentary on that lol
Another wonderful review of a fun camp classic. by the extremely informative and wildly entertaining, film historian, Steve Hayes. A+++
