@Renegade Media Group Wallachia was a Kingdom roughly comprising the southern territory of Romania, defining it's southern, eastern and western borders with the River Danube, and drawing it's northern border along the Carpathian Mountains. It has a very war torn history, between it's conflicts with Hungary, trying to maintain it's independence from the culturally different Magyars. And it's more famous conflicts against the Ottomans. It's most famous ruler was Vlad III, better known as Vlad, The Impaler. Who spent most of his reign committing great bloody acts. From nailing the turbans of Ottoman Emissaries to their heads. To impaling entire villages, in an effort to keep the Ottomans from gaining the territory. I highly suggest you read up on Wallachia, because what I've for the most part summarized is doing it injustice, and it is honestly a very interesting history that cannot be explained in a single post.
Vlad III not Vlad II. Although Vlad II (also known as Vlad the Dragon) is where we get the name Dracula from as he and the his more famous son took the name Dracul which I believe is Romanian for Dragon.

Interesting that you would think the first season would work better as a movie, because that’s what was the original idea. Back in 2007, Warren Ellis (the writer of the whole series and who I am a huge fan of) wrote the series as a direct-to-video film with the possibility of a trilogy (each part having a three-act structure) to tell the full story. The project went into development hell for a full decade before Netflix and Adi Shankar, the producer of Dredd and his very own “Bootleg Universe” (who I also love), took it on and produced it as an animated series. Changes to the script were made to fit this structure, but overall Ellis’s vision remained the same. This was all for the best since the series has been renewed for a fourth season, with hopefully more on the way, and Adi Shankar is producing his “Bootleg Multiverse” for Netflix, which will include animated video game adaptations of Devil May Cry, Assassins Creed, and Hyper Light Drifter. YEAH FOR US!!! P.S. Grant Danasty isn’t in the series (yet) because Ellis felt he didn’t have enough time to develop his character, thought he contrasted with the setting, and he had a stupid name.
You know, the Church’s treated of Lisa is pretty accurate to the time period. Back then, if you had an advanced knowledge of science, technology, medicine, etc, you were deemed a witch by the religious nuts because your understanding of how the world works went against understanding of how the world works. While today, such knowledge is common and universally accepted, it used to be very rare and extremely blasphemous.
This is pretty much all wrong. Witch trials happened during the early modern period, not the middle ages. The church’s problems with science, like most things we associate with the backwards middle ages (especially societal views on women) were actually much worse during and following the Enlightenment period. I like the show for what it is, but what it is not a documentary.
@renegadeMediaGroup Funny enough, for the Anime Night group I run on discord we watched the entire first season of Castlevania in celebration of Halloween and plan on watching season 2 along with season 2 of Gargoyles in celebration of Halloween this year. Apart from the shared name/title there is little to no evidence or documentation that link Bram Stoker's literary character to the historical figure. The most consistent origin we have for the Dracula character is a nightmare Bram Stoker had after eating a very rich crab dish.
Okay I'd hate to be that guy because a I'm not and b I love this show but I have I'm sorry political problem with it. So I'm Catholic so of course I kinda feel uncomfy with the church's portrayal but I completely understand why - I am *not* ignorant to the naughty weve done throughout history - plus it's cool as an adaptation, building upon the background story beats. Trevor was excommunicated and lost his fortune and Lisa was burnt at the stake so it's cool this show exploring that and yes exploring corruption in the church is juicy drama I can get behind. I write it too... My issue is that the show is largely set in Wallachia, Romania... they're Orthodox Christians, not Roman Catholics. That's not to say Catholics didn't exist there, but they'd certainly not have the authority or reach they do in this show. The Orthodox church is nowhere to be seen in this version of history... So why the fuck is the Catholics running the show? Simple... Warren Ellis. Now I'm not one to get all pissy about historical accuracy, I believe in the need for artistic licensing for quality storytelling but lying about another country's religion so that the author can take some social political potshots at the big Christian institution that did some naughty things is kinda sketch to me. I tried to be nice so please don't at me I just feel the need to get that off my chest.
Actually, the myth that Bram Stoker based Count Dracula on (Prince) Vlad the Impaler is ENTIRELY false; there is not a single iota of truth to any of it. Not only that, but Stoker wasn't even inspired by Vlad. We know because Bram Stoker's notes have been extensively documented, and nowhere in them is Vlad EVER mentioned. In fact the Character and story of Dracula were basically finished LONG before Stoker ever even chose the name Dracula. (which he only chose because he mistranslated as 'Son of the Devil'. There's also no evidence that Stoker had ever even heard of Vlad the Impaler, as Drakula was a surprisingly common nickname during the 1400s in Eastern Europe.) Not only that, but Dracula was explicitly stated to be from Transylvania, which nowadays is in Romania, but at the time was a part of Hungary. Dracula is explicitly stated to be a Székelys, which is a Hungarian ethnic group claiming to be descended from the Huns. (Also, the vast majority of those who Vlad Tepes impaled were NOT Ottomans, they were his own loyal subjects. And funnily enough the impalements did not work to stave off the Ottomans.)
Did not work? I thought the sultan at least once retreated, together with Vlad's brother who was the sultan's protégé. Seeing what Vlad was capable off doing to his own people with his forest of corpses even the great sultan Murad II thought it unwise to go against this demon. He would leave that to his other enemies like Matthias I of Hungary. Also the sultan figured Vlad being his own worst enemy. ... I do agree with the rest. Vlad executed mainly the upperclass or ambassadors to make an example. Still often they lied to him or made a bold statement of not taking account lower class. That's plain foolish knowing Vlad's reputation. He's that easily provoked & he considers his civilians equal. Only he decides who's "low". Stoker based his entire story off his grudge to his employer plus maybe some circulating text about folklore in the Balkans & possibly has read Carmilla by Le Fanu. That historian giving him info on Vlad Tepes is so far unconfirmed, but could be.

This turned into a very interesting topic. I never knew Nate was a Christian, that's awesome to hear, it's not often we hear people come out and admit that. I very much enjoyed the topic and it was interesting to hear some viewpoints. One thing I do have to correct and don't take this the wrong way I'm not trying to start and argument or anything like that. I would just like to point out that Jesus did not have the complete viewpoint of that nothing in the old testament matters anymore and that certain things like Homosexuality is alright, it's more of that many things that we did back then such as sacrificing animals for our sins is no longer necessary because Jesus did that for us. In Mathew 5:17-20 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." He does speak on the union of two people as well. “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:5-9 So to me that's quite plain, it is meant to be a union of man and woman quite simply. Now this isn't me saying I hate homosexuals, I have no particular feelings of dislike or hatred for them, I am simply expressing the truth that I see and believe, and I don't just predicate this off of facts from the Bible I do think there are practical reasons why the union of man with man and woman with woman shouldn't be. There are studies that show gay, bisexual men and women have a much greater chance of getting STDs in fact I've seen a study that said seventeen times greater than a heterosexual male, so I think things like that are fairly substantial. Last thing, again please do not interpret this as me trying to hate on homosexuals I do not think they are any different from anyone else, I simply believe they made a misguided choice.
