  • Although it’s been around for millennia, rammed-earth construction- layers of granite and soil, compacted into solid walls-is making a surprising reappearance in multimillion dollar homes. Photo: Robert Reck

"Although it has been around for a millennia,"
Earth oldest rammed earth structures are from the Neolithic period from 12,000 years ago, not a millennia, (which is 1000 years).

😍 Beautiful. I'm wondering about the price point & durability in more moist environments though. As well as cleaning the walls.

Durability? Tornado, hurricane, fire, insects, mold proof, and more.
Moist environments? It is mixed with cement. Moisture cannot get into it. The Great Wall of China (over 3,000 years old), and homes from Jesus's days, are built by using the Ramned Earth method. They last hundreds, and even thousands of years.
Price? Depending on whom you hire. Through a company, it could be very expensive. Also depending if you can use your dirt, or if you have to purchase it. And if you want to add different color sand, crushed sea shells, and/or colored rocks, etc for your Interior wall designs. Friends and family (depending upon county regulations. They may require for an engineer to help through the complete process) very affordable. Just make sure that it is done properly, or it will crumble. The type of sand used; mixture of sand, cement, and clay; and make sure that it is rammed very tightly, is the key to success. Please research many videos on does and don'ts, to have a bigger understanding on the complete process to building a Rammed Earth home.

The footage is great, and the projects showcase some excellent design, this is one of the worst narrated construction-related videos I’ve ever seen. The narrator repeatedly mentions materials in a way that insinuates that she knows what she’s talking about, when in fact, she’s woefully ignorant of the subject. Granite is mentioned repeatedly, as if granite is somehow a core component of rammed earth construction. It is not. It may be an ancillary aspect in terms of the amount of granite that might be present in the aggregate, but that’s it. No mention is made of clay, or water, or Portland cement. This has all the earmarks of a NY apartment dweller’s freelance take on a design concept they have no experience with.

I fully agree with you. Her inexperience with the subject, combined with her abysmal lack of real knowledge shows through over and over. "The two foot thick walls..." -like that's a surprising design feature that the builder came up with. And her insistance on repeatedly mentioning the tonnage of materials involved, then claiming that some of the walls were made of "sand and gravel'... All in all, I think you got it right with your last sentence.

Bjarne Henningssøn in arizona we have crushed granite in 1/4" minus form we used to name decomposed granite..or dg . We use it as a sand bed under brick paver flooring. it has great compression standards... better than sand.

Zero Merxer Buddha is just an idol anyway. Throw the idol into the fire. He becomes dirt. Use the dirt to buid a rammed earth wall. No more buddha
