I like when John feels comfortable enough to show us his nightly stalking process. Like a cat on the hunt... for vending machines, strange alleyways, and shrines... Keep an eye out for yokai. That water pump is probably the local kappa fill-up station.

John, I love your nocturnal alley walks/walking tours. I really enjoyed the last one. I cannot get over how quiet Tokyo is at 2:30AM. And those alleys look pretty safe compared to alleys over here. I would never think about going down any alley at 2:30AM here. I’m a night owl so it’s good to know when I come to Japan I can go for walks around 2-3AM and know I’m pretty safe.

Whoa! This was an awesome live from Feb 2021! You realize that Japan is probably the only place where you can walk around the city, with a camera and do a live session, without being in danger. Although that shrine guy was pretty creepy. He was probably following you at a distance to make sure you were not up to something nefarious. Also, I think the UA-cam algorithm is at work here, because in your recent video, you mentioned that tree from the shrine (Japanese Summer Festival around Tokyo, Aug 5, 2023) and I believe this video is the first time you found that shrine! At least from your reaction. It was so cool that you touched that tree. A tree that has been there for thousands of years perhaps? Judging from the size of the trunk...it is so huge! OMG! So cool. I seriously have to go back and watch some of your lives during the pandemic. ❤ Great stuff.

I am really jealous. Japan looks very safe and that even in a really big city like Tokyo.

Been watching more and more of your videos John. I can't wait to get back to Japan. It's been so long since 2019. Ugh! But , yeah I just love Japanese alleys like those, haha.. I rented a house for a week in Kyoto and the house was in front of a tram railway, and then narrow alley on the side of the house to walk to the other side where the shopping arcade. It's dark but not creepy at all. I miss that place.

I can see recalling the ghost story still freaks you and I don't blame you - No one ever truly 'believes' in ghosts until they have an encounter themselves... I know from personal experience. Like yours, mine was a benign encounter, but it still gives me the chills retelling it.

Thanks John. Fun and interesting video👍🏼
For visitors coming to Japan, it's always best to practice etiquette at shrines. Before taking photos/videos, it's always best to first show respect. Simply bowing before entering and doing a small prayer at the alter. No need to ring the bell, but would be good to at least bow first and pay respects. Photos and video taking are fine after at most unless signs prohibiting are posted. It's kind of like someone coming over to your house and before saying "hello", they bust out their cameras and start taking photos. 😇 Shrines are sacred and places of worship, not haunted places. Shrines are also not solely tourist spots.
I share this not to get too serious, but it is one of many special and intimate parts of culture that Japan has that is not often told by tour guides and others. I hope it brings a more special experience to your visit.
