What was your favorite monster? Mine was definitely the Turtle Monster!!!
The bat-cat
The little mummy hamster!
@@thehomeofrainbows would be mine too... maybe because I love Batman😉
Bat-cat.
The bat cat
I'm pretty sure the mummified hamster came back (relatively) normal like sparky because he was loved. He stood no chance against the tortoise 😭
I mean Nassor gave a speech about how they'd finally be reunited and did you see Colossus's tomb? His resting place is way fancier than the others. Definitely loved 😭
This movie is great, I love it, a wonderful little Halloween classic.
A few fun facts:
All of the creatures in the film are in some way referencing old movie monsters.
* Sparky is obviously Frankenstein's monster
* The neighbour dog's white hair stripes is a reference to 'Bride Of Frankenstein' who had identical hair. Not only that but the neighbour girl being named Elsa is a shout-out to the actress Elsa Lanchster, who played the titular Bride in 'Bride Of Frankenstein'
* The rat is based on a werewolf
* The invisible fish is a throwback to 'The Invisible Man'
* The turtle that turns gigantic is a nod to both Gamera and Godzilla
* 'Colossus' was obviously 'The Mummy'
* And finally, the cat-bat hybrid is inspired by Dracula, as a 'Vampire Cat'
* Also, Sparky taking down the were-rat first can be seen as a nod to the first crossover monster movie, 'Frankenstein Vs The Wolf Man' from 1943
The shot of the kids climbing the stairs at 25:23 is a callback to 'Nosferatu', which had a similar iconic shot of the vampire Count Orlok climbing the stairs, shown only by his eerie-looking shadow moving along the wall.
The tall skinny kid who owned Colossus? You noted he looked weird, that's because his appearance and voice were based on the actor Boris Karloff, most famous for playing both Frankenstein's monster and the Mummy in the old 1930s movies. Look him up sometime, the movie's character design isn't TOO far off. This is also referenced with that character ending up wrapped in bandages and locked in a 'coffin' in the finale, just like a mummy.
On that same note, the science teacher was based physically on horror legend Vincent Price. I don't know if his accent was based on any particular Price performance, he was in hundreds of films, it's entirely possible it was and we just don't know which one.
The finale taking place in a windmill is an obvious nod to the original 'Frankenstein' again, where the finale took place in the same location. In fact I think the entire reason for the town being named New Holland and having 'Dutch Day' was just an excuse to put a rustic windmill in the town, solely for the finale.
Lastly, this film is actually a remake. Tim Burton made it as a live-action short film way back before he was famous. It's much shorter and less ambitious (I'm pretty sure Sparky is the only 'monster' in that version), but it's worth a watch. I think it's included as a short on most DVD releases of 'Nightmare Before Christmas', if you have access to a copy be sure to check it out for a fun comparison.
The original Frankenweenie short is also on Disney+, I just discovered it a few weeks ago when I rewatched this version and it came up as recommended.
The Sea Monkeys were also The Creature from The Black Lagoon
And Edgar is a combination of Egor and actor Peter Lorre
I love how this movie is just a HUGE love letter to classic monster movies, so many references and gags in names and visuals.
I loved this movie, Victor and Sparky's bond was the best, and I liked that Victor's parents were portrayed as caring and supportive.
Tim Burton made a 30 minute live action Frankenweenie film in 1984 for Disney and they fired him for making something too dark and scary for kids. After other successful dark children movies, Disney released it and produced a remake with Tim Burton as a full film.
Disney just cares about the 💰 that’s why
Oh wow, a reincarnated dog is too scary for kids.
-says the people that made the darkest lion movie and deer movie of all time
Elsa Van Helsing lives up to her family name. While all the adults ran, she tried to fight the monsters.
It's been confirmed that Tim Burton is done with Disney and will not be making anymore films with them, calling them "a Hollywood Circus run by greedy clowns."
He’s not wrong
I don't blame him they only care about money now unfortunately
Seeing the lack of originality, the explotation of nostalgia and the threw up of tacky remakes... he is damn right.
@@LadyOndyne Yeah, and he made one of those tacky remakes.
2:06 i can actually answer that! yes, the models are made in black and white because only using a filter on color models fucks with the shading. however, they do add a filter even when using monochrome models because you can't get a purely monochrome image on a camera capable of displaying color. it's very subtle, but even footage of monochrome objects has hints of color to it primarily because of lighting/reflections. so, they combine the two. i know many studios use a bit of additional cgi to correct lighting errors when making monochrome, but because tim burton specializes in stop motion and likely had many set resources because disney i don't know if they needed to do that in this movie.
hope that answered your question!
All the creatures were paying homage to classic horror movie monsters.
Of course Sparky was Frankenstein. Shelley was Godzilla. The rat was the Wolfman. Mr. whiskers was the vampire. And Colossus was the mummy. And maybe the goldfish was the invisible man. And I want to say the sea monkeys were creature from the Black Lagoon.
I thing the sea monkeys were some sort of hybrid between the creature of the black lagoon and gremlins
@@thetriplejjj0177 I can see that
This is actually a remake. Tim Burton made this same movie, but in live action, in 1984, and it was only 30 minutes long. It starred Barret Oliver (from Neverending Story), Shelley Duvall (from The Shining), and Daniel Stern (from Home Alone).
A movie about a dead dog done by a former Disney animator who eventually became disenchanted with the company? That hasn't been done since at least... All Dogs go to Heaven?
So glad you noticed queen Winona Ryder, she was also in Beetlejuice, little women, girl interrupted, stranger things, mermaids and Heather's. Yesterday was her 51st birthday. She was 41 when she was in this movie
victor in this film reminds me of victor from "tim burton's corpse bride" along with the mayor (he reminds me of victoria's dad)
Hi guys. Here with my horror recs again. I recommend The Boy (2016) and Orphan (2009). They could fit into a Halloween vibe easily, but either way! The Boy is a creepy doll movie but with some eerie twists. Orphan has a pretty jaw-dropping twist if you don’t see it coming (I didn’t LOL), plus some A+ acting. I’m kinda surprised Isabelle Fuhrman isn’t more famous as a young actress honestly 😮 .
Mr. Rzykruski's appearance is based on Vincent Price's. Price was in a lot of those black and white B horror movies.
Here's the monster references some of them are pretty obvious
Sparky = Frankenstein's monster
Persephone the poodle = bride of Frankenstein
Colossus = the mummy
Sea monkeys = creature from the Black Lagoon in appearance and gremlins in behavior
Edgar's goldfish = invisible man
Edgar's rat = wolf-man
Shelly = Godzilla
Mr. Whisker's the cat = vampire
I never got to see this movie again, my dog was also called sparky and he died a few years ago. I'm happy to be able to see it again with you guys.
I love how they incorporate the idea that experiment was only successful when it was done out of love and determination. It gave more to the fact that Sparky and Colossus were the only successful. The other pets had no love, only repulsion and hatred. I know this might be a ridiculous recommendation, but if you like Alvin and the Chipmunks, there’s a double feature where the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein and the WolfMan.
🧑🏻🔬🐶☠️⚡️🖤🤍💚
9:33 im sorry but the "you dumb idiot mayor" kinda killed me for some reason 😂
I'm upset that Mr. Whiskers literally just died lol
Because the others were already dead, but he was just living his life as a weird little cat :c
In the original Addams Family sitcom their house was actually pink because it looked better in black & white than other colours did. So a film being black & white doesn't preclude interesting colour use, you just don't see it.
Yeah!! That’s really cool
I made the same comment before I seen yours.
I went to see with my nana when it was in theaters (she wanted to go to the movies and I already promised Mom we would go see Hotek Transylvania together (which we never did) and this was the only other movie with a family friendly rating) and at the end, she said she didn't think Sparky should have come back. She also said young kids, mainly boys, would now get the idea to resurrect their pets from this movie🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sparky = Frankensteins Monster
Poodle dog = The Bride
Dead Gold fish = The Invisible Man
Shelly(turtle) = Godzilla
Colossus (Hamster) = The Mummy
Sea Monkey = Gremlins
Dead Rat = The Wolfman
Mr. Whiskers (Cat) = Dracula
This is a feature-length remake of Burton's 1984 short film of the same name.
It is interesting that they mention your makeup has to be black and white to make the movie look good in black and white. The Addams Family television series was pink and the camera shot in black and white.
this movie was a fave and means a lot to me since I was a kid, it came at a weirdly ironic time in my life where my dog called SPARKY just passed away and child me really thought about trying to reanimate him 🥶
Forgot this movie was in black an white, I think it adds the the eeriness.
This film paid homage to old-school horror films (Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, The Mummy, even Godzilla)
This movie breaks my heart
Ok for me, victor was really depressed he brought back his best friend … I WISH I could do this
It's actually a lesson for me that yes you lose your pet yes you'd do anything to bring them back but... it's best if things stay dead as hard as it is I'd do anything to have my old animals back but... I know it's best they should stay dead which I know is the harsh way to put it but, this was a lesson I learned.
The black and white is to give an old horror movie esthetic. The models are absolutely black, white & gray, there’s no point in using colors in a colorless movie, it’s a poor waste of material. It’s a good fusion between the models and light manipulation. There a behind the scenes of this movie on UA-cam, I’d recommend giving it a watch.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my mom and my brother, and the jumpscare with the monster rat made me jump a foot out of my seat!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
An interesting fact: In the original Dracula book Dr.Van Hellsing is dutch. So the story plaing in New Holland is likely a nod to that.
There is an older Frankenweenie movie btw
Maybe not this year, but sometime in the future, I would love it if you guys can react to classic movies from the Universal Monsters! ✌
The Hammer horror classics would be good too
Transylvania is a real region in Romania
Burton practically copied the titular character from "The Family Dog" for Sparky and the round-headed boy with the bad teeth also. "The Family Dog" was Brad Bird's 2D animation for the Spielberg TV Series "Amazing Stories" first airing on February 16, 1987. I highly recommend you watch it as it is only 21 minutes.
Did a quick Google search .. It seems like the movie was shot in color, but released in black and white. As soon as they got done with each frame, they changed it over on the computer to black and white. Also, this movie was a homage to 1960 monster movies, so it had to be in black and white for the director. This is also based off a short TB did in 1984 with the same concept.
I saw the midnight premiere when this had come out initially and they double billed it with Nightmare Before Christmas. I probably had more fun seeing a favorite up on the big screen than the new film but Frankenweenie was a major relief after seeing career low Dark Shadows in theaters that same year.
I actually quite liked Dark Shadows, apparently it was based on a 60s sitcom so maybe it would have fared better as a series than a movie.
@@silverwind3766 It's more like a soap opera, I looked into it around the time Burton's came out and it's actually extremely interesting from the couple I watched (Certainly the best soap I've ever watched not that it's a high bar) but those things go on forever and I'm someone who likes to watch in order to completion so....probably not happening.
Character cast base movies and the teacher-Vincent Price.
I love this movie it is very amazing. This movie is like a dog version of Frankenstein itself. And the type of dog breed that Sparky was based off of was a bull terrier.
The teacher I think is based on Vincent Price I think, who was in numerous horror movies. Was also in Edward Scissor hands.
i think you guys should react to more tim burton movies
Im so glad you guys are reacti ng to this I suggested it on your patreon ages ago I absolutely love it.
Creature from the black lagoon/ Sea monkey's from the black pool. The Wolfman/ The wererat. Gamera/Shelly. The Mummy/ Mummy Colossus. Count Dracula/ Count Mr. Whiskers. Frakenstein's Monster/ Frankenweenie Sparky. Invisible man/ Invisible Goldfish.
I also have a film you guys mays want to see, it definitely made me jump and freaked me out but it had a bittersweet type of ending. The film is called Before I Wake
Actually, Disney did a short live-action Frankenweenie movie back in ‘84. It staring the kid from the Neverending Story.
Believe it or not, this is actually a...dum, dum, DUM...REMAKE!!! It was originally a live action short film made by Tim Burton in his early years. The live action was also in black and white and had the same type of dog (French bull terroir, I believe), but it didn't have the added horror classic monsters. Its very cute and I recommend giving it a watch!
I remember having a mini chills when i saw this for the first time coz i thought it was the victor from corpse bride childhood and he also got a dog.
Victor looks like Victor from corpse bride.
Agreed
I love how every character in this movie looks like a very classic monster.
The teacher, is a zombie
The Asian kid and Victor is a mad scientist
The tall kid with a sweater, is Frankenstein
The short kid was crooked teeth in a hump on his back, is obviously Igor
The weird girl with the cat I feel supposed to be some sort of Michael Myers but he just stares at you in a creepy way
The sea monkeys supposed to be a reference to the gremlins
The giant turtles supposed to be a reference to Godzilla
Ect. There is just a ton of references
I think that teacher supposed to mad scientist also, tall boy supposed be a mummy and blond girl a vampire or creepy doll
The Tall Kid also looks like Lur from Adams Family
Anyone else notice igors left hand is super streached out as well as his fingers
I'm so excited that you're thinking of continuing reactions to stop-motion movies! I saw MAD GOD. It was nuts! Not only 'cos of the animation but also 'cos it took Phil Tippet 30 years to make it! Just be warned though..don't eat when you're watching it. :p
The fact that they made a Gamera in this movie killed me lmfao.
What a great movie!🖤 I have to buy a DVD ! I only saw it once. I have to watch it again. I think it could be one of my favourite movies.😎 Thank you for the Reaction ! 🙂
This is a remake of a live action short Tim Burton did inbetween doing animation for Disney (he did Vixey for The Fox and The Hound but only i distance shots as he couldn't draw the Disney eyes) and his directorial debut of Beetlejucie, Edward Scissorhands and Batman. It was in black and white as well to pay homage to the Frankenstein movies from Universal (including the original and The Bride of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff who played The Monster).
It also contains the Goodbye Kitty tombstone, which of course, is dark pun on Hello Kitty.
It's always wonderful watching movies with you handsome guys. By the way, is that money in the background? :D I want it! Thank you for this reaction!!
Check out the color photos of the sets from Addams Family tv series. The show was in black & white but the sets were bright pink & gold
I will!!!
Having stuff in color then putting it in black and white gives better shades. Like the Addams Family show, their house was pink and bright and it made it perfect for giving various shades.
I like the ironic twist of the Adams Family having a pink house xD
25:25 Those shadows on the wall up the staircase was a reference to Nosferatu.
21:27 COOLEST. SCIENCE TEACHER. EVER.
*Me realizing this is what Victor most likely would’ve looked like as a child with back then* Huh…
Hey guys! I think you like the stop motion tecnique so there is a film now available in many languages in youtube for free named 'O apostolo' an unknown spanish movie creepy as f*** in the good way, you may like it.
Vincent price is the science teacher
Still not a hard favorite, but it makes me feel like I need a revisit because I watched it too long ago and in a state that wasn't interested. Tim Burton has always had a creative crush on Johnny, he proudly admits it that he is the golden gothic look he sees for his films. It's the best because I agree completely 😁. You guys have got to see the 2015 Victor Frankenstein it's an eye opener
Just being random here, I would love to be cast in one of Tim Burton's films it would be so cool 😍 gotta be one of my top 10 favorite directors. As always Great reaction 💜✨
With the way how the vampire cat dies could be a reference to The Omen. A priest in the movie dies in a way like the cat
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!
Same!!
I feel so bad for the cat in this movie. She did NOT deserve what happened to her. Plus rabies is actually really rare in bats. My parents used to rescue them and less than 1% of bats have rabies!
you guys really should do like a special reacting to the original shorts or something, it would be so cool!
i love this movie cause i reallly miss my dogs, i really cried cause my i reminise the time im with with my departed dogs...
I hope you get to see the Laika movie Boxtrolls!
Mayor Burgermeister is both name and look-wise heavily based on Burgermeister Meisterburger from Rankin-Bass Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, which is also a stop-motion animation film, Also Burgermeister means mayor in German (it's similiar to swedish word for mayor borgmästare borg = burg, mästare = master).
I did not catch that the girl’s name was Van Helsing when I first saw this movie. Feels like both a reference and a bit of a letdown. I mean with a name like that, you’d think she’d get to do something cool.
Still love the movie, though. I kind of want to rewatch it to see what else I missed before.
For October you guys should check out a haunted Mansion
Thanks dad, glad I tried sports.
Hope you get to Kubo and the Two Strings
Song of the Sea takes place on Halloween
still waiting for Disney Pixar Cars (2006) 🙏🏼🔥🔥🔥
Great film
A couple of easter eggs in this film that a lot of people look over is the science teacher and the dracula movie. The design of the teacher is based off of classic horror star Vincent Price who was Tim Burton's idol and got to work with him a few times. Originally Tim wanted the teacher to be voiced by another Horror Star Christopher Lee but sadly Lee passed away before production began. But as tribute to Lee, Tim placed that clip of dracula in the movie which Christopher Lee starred as Dracula. This whole movie truly was a tribute and inspired by all the classic horror movies. Even the fish was a tribute to the Invisible Man. This is absolutely one of my favorites just because of how much heart was put into it.
2:53 To me, I can literally see 2012 Victor having 2005 Victor's face (The kid in Frankenweenie is Victor and Victor is the main character in Corpse Bride. I am trying not to confuse people or anything in this comment with Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.)
Plus, what is with all of the dogs in Tim Burton's stop motion movies? First, it is Touchstone Pictures 1993 The Nightmare Before Christmas (Re-released in 2006 by Disney) with Jack's ghost dog Zero. Then, it is Warner Bros. 2005 Corpse Bride with Victor's skeleton dog Scraps. Now it is Disney's 2012 Frankenweenie with 2012 Victor's Frankenstein dog Sparky
Which stop motion dog do u like the best out of all of them I explained ;)
Please make a reaction to Maleficent, the first movie🙏, there's just a second one there, but first the first one😊
will you guys be reacting to the Wensday Adam's series?
I think so!!
Love your reaction so cool!
have you guys ever seen beetlejuice
I love this movie ! My favorite monster villain is Dracula ❤️ I love novel Dracula by Bram Stoker
I just now realized that this is literal animal abuse.. those poor animals didn't deserve any of this. Especially poor Mr. whiskers
Plz react to a movie called song of the sea it has a or of a Halloween part but it’s such an underrated animation and movie
Boxtrolls, great animated movie!
You guys should watch Trick r Treat
React on movie "Silent Hill" .. it will give you nightmares 😅👍❤️
the short film of this is better ❤
Please react to Ginger Snaps
One of my all time favourite movies so sad but then a happy ending
Plz react to a movie called song of the sea it has a or of a Halloween part but it’s such an underrated animation and movie
