Contrary to popular belief, he did not just all of a sudden convert in Mecca; his conversion process to Sunni Islam spanned a few years but was finally complete in Mecca. Malcom x stated to leave your religion at home in the closet. He realized that both religion played a role in the misguiding and oppression of their people. He states in the letter I mentioned that he had been “misused” by Elijah Muhammad. This got published in The NY Times and based on FBI files and the account of some who knew Malcolm at the time, the NOI had been finally ready to leave him alone, but when they saw that he was basically calling them a cult and that he planned on spreading orthodox Islam, that did in fact anger the leadership of the NOI and Brother Malcolm started getting more death threats and attempts on his life. So orthodox Islam did play a role. Of course, the NOI cared. They feared that if their followers learned Sunni Islam, they would leave the NOI and join Brother Malcolm’s Muslim Mosque, Inc.

I never met this King in person, yet he is in my spirit. I know to love this man is a great thing for my soul. Malcom x stated to leave your religion at home in the closet. He realized that both religion played a role in the misguiding and oppression of their people. He realized this when he had his falling out of the Nation of Islam. That both religions were used for imperialism and that just like how king was dupped into following religion blindly so was he.
