As someone who uses the Fjalraven backpack a few times a week, I have to disagree with it being a good everyday bag. The shoulder straps are not padded enough and after about an hour or less of walking around with this bag on the straps are cutting into my shoulders and making everything hurt. It is lightly loaded with one 8oz water bottle, and change of clothes, and snacks for my 4 year old. Size wise and material, it’s a sturdy bag, but the shoulder straps need serious work for it to be a regular carry.
Just sayin...I use the Fjallraven Raven 28 everyday, super loaded with 2 laptops, umbrella, 18oz. water bottle, camera, electronics and LOTS of other stuff...I find the straps to be every bit as comfortable as my Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 21!
I won't even put a sling without pads 😂😂😂 seems like a trend bag more than a real bag everyday. Never tried but seems like a basic bag when I looked at it. I use to do a lot of Peak Design but the design started looking like a diaper bag , their slings. I started using Code Of Bell.
i agree with this! this is why i got the laptop fjallraven (which has padded straps) back in 2017, but even then, i found the straps too thin + the material wore down very quickly for me making it look 'worn out' after ~1 year of use :(
Alder Stream canvas is definitely my go to. Not very well known brand, but their packs are some of the best quality/durability to value options on the market. Heavy weight 18oz duck canvas (request to order), full-grain leather straps, high polish belt style buckles all over the pack, machine-pressed rose brass rivets holding hardware and strapping, double, triple, and quadruple stitched seams, all for around $250. Several color options available, and every pack is made to order. I highly recommend checking them out if you grow tired of replacing under-performing day packs every 2-3 years.
Can’t believe the Nomatic backpacks didn’t make this list. They aren’t cheap but are absolutely amazing. Best backpack I ever had. Checks all the boxes. For EDC I would also include the Tropicfeel Nest. Very nice and versatile.
The perfect bookbag to me is the Oakley kitchen sink all black color way. The retail price is about 220 usd. But in my opinion its one of the most stylish and funtional bags of its time. Its 30 years old but the design still holds true.
For EDCs it's important to consider empty weight too. After years of happy daily use of an eastpack, I switched to a north face recon. It felt so pointlessly heavy even when half empty that after 3 months I sold it and went back to my old reliable (500 g.) eastpack
Thank you for your feedback! When choosing an everyday carry (EDC) bag, it's crucial to consider its empty weight. Your experience of switching to a heavier bag and then returning to your lighter Eastpack emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between durability and weight. The right EDC bag should not only meet your organizational needs but also be comfortable, especially in terms of weight, for your daily use:)
This is just the kinda video l needed, a a week ago my 13 yo totto backpack broke after so many years of usage, and now living in the UK I have no idea on what brands are there, thanks for sharing!
I'm looking for a backpack suitable for both daily activities for school and short trips, many pockets, comfortable straps and can handle big water bottle. Maybe the TNF Borealis? Anyways, this video helps a lot, I really appreciate this!
The TNF Borealis sounds like a great choice for your needs! Its multiple pockets, comfortable straps, and ability to hold a large water bottle make it versatile for daily activities and short trips. We're glad the video was helpful for you, thank you for your feedback:)
Can’t understand why you would choose the Fjallraven Kanken instead of the Raven 20, which is far superior in design and comfort as a day bag. Great video though. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I previously put a lot of trust in the AER Travel Pack 3, having bought BOTH the 28 and 35-liter versions in the X-Pac variant, and I really liked them. However, they are just too heavy for daily use, especially commuting to university. I'm looking for a backpack that includes: - separate zip compartments for a Macbook Pro 16inches and an iPad, - is waterproof, - has a slot for a water bottle - features a breathable back panel. - has a lot of compartments/zippers like the AER, preferably accessible from the outside of the bag - can be opened completely (sometimes I like to fit a camera packing cube inside as I’m a photographer too, but usually this happens when I don’t have my Mac on me) Budget is not a constraint as I'm willing to invest in quality and functionality. If anyone could recommend a lighter alternative that meets these criteria, it would be a huge help. Thanks for your assistance! Best, Mattia
Hi Mattia! Based on your requirements, we recommend checking out the Peak Design Everyday Backpack. It meets all your criteria including separate compartments for your MacBook Pro and iPad, waterproofing, a water bottle slot, breathable back panel, plenty of compartments, and easy access zippers. Plus, it's lighter compared to the AER Travel Pack 3:)
Yes! Both the North Face Surge and the North Face Router are excellent options for both everyday carry and travel. If you prefer a slightly smaller bag, go for the Surge, and the Router if you want maximum space. Cheers!
Were you able to get your hands on the Triple Aught Axiom S2 VX? I can't find any reviews anywhere. I got mine today and while I like the form factor I don't know if I can overlook how loud the material sounds. It sounds like ruffling paper. Hoping you can get one and do a review, would love to hear other opinions.
We haven't personally tried the Triple Aught Axiom S2 VX, but if the loud material sound concerns you, it might be worth considering other options. While form factor is important, noise level can impact overall satisfaction. Checking online forums or reaching out to communities for more reviews could provide additional insights.
I love the review ... but the Veilance Nomin baffled me... I suppose you buy it for the brand or something ?, because it looks(and as I see from the organisation inside is almost nothing) like a cheap junk for 20-30 dollars that I find in a random shop in my town. I liked the Alpha One Niner most , great functionality.
It's interesting to hear your perspective! Indeed, sometimes brand recognition can influence perceptions, and personal preferences vary greatly when it comes to backpacks. Thanks for sharing your insights!
For the Jansport option the leather bottom is a bit better for durability and a little bit more dollars. I also love the ll bean deluxe bookbag which surprised me. Just be aware about how you unzip and to distribute the load. I mention those points cuz a lot of the bad reviews are stupid parents blaming the zipper getting caught on the storm flap so they think the zipper breaks and complain about not being able to return. I have a second ll bean backpack which is the mountain classic and also surprised me with the durability and how much I liked it. Dakine student campus backpack is also a nice budget option. I love budget backpacks... can't justify spending more than 100$ right now.
Thanks for sharing your insights! It's good to know about the durability benefits of the leather bottom on the Jansport option. The LL Bean Deluxe Bookbag sounds impressive too, but as you mentioned, it's important to be mindful of how you distribute the load and handle the zipper. The Dakine Student Campus Backpack also sounds like a solid budget-friendly choice. Budget backpacks can offer great value without breaking the bank!
For a simple yet distinctive option with extra pockets and darker colors, Aer offers several great choices. The Aer Day Sling 2 or Aer Day Sling 2 X-Pac could be excellent options. They feature a sleek design with multiple compartments for organization and come in darker color options. Alternatively, the Aer Tech Sling 2 could also be worth considering, offering similar functionality with a slightly different style:)
