This has been an elusive topic for me for many years and you have simply nailed it in simple descriptions. Thank you for this gold and essential information
If the GCM is over by 100 , wouldn’t it be best to drop the weight in the caravan rather than the car as it’s best to keep the car heavier than the van? 🤔 Thanks for your work on this topic, much appreciated 👍🏆🍻
On a truck, the fifth wheel (Turntable/ greasy plate) is ahead of the axle, not behind it. Same with a fifth wheel caravan. So some of the weight is shared by the front wheels. This just shows how complex our weight rules and. I doubt there is a caravan on the road that is legal, and the most sneaky reason is the rear axle loading. I have not been able to find the rear axle limit for a 100 series Landcruiser!!
I have a question regarding tow ball mass. The tow ball mass is part of the GCM and GCM =GVM +ATM There fore if you want to know what the maximum GVM is then rearrange formula and GVM= GCM-ATM Bearing in mind that the tow ball mass is now on the hitch and is part of vehicle payload does this mean that in reality the GVM is GCM-ATM Remember that ATM is tow all mass + GTM The reason I say this is Ford Ranger supposedly can tow 3500KG The kerbwieght of a ranger is 2200 kg and if you take 3500 from the 6000 KG GCM then your total payload is only 300kg. If you then minus from that pay load a 450KG TBM then the ranger can tow it Whish is why I ask do you subtract the GTM or ATM?? Sorry it's long winded
The TBM isn't really part of the GCM. It's better to think of the GCM being a limit of the total weight of rig and towcar. There is no formula for it either. ATM is max trailer can weight. Max braked tow capacity is different. GCM may be less than GVM + braked tow maximum. Does that help?
@@L2SFBC I fully understand what GCM is, it's is the combined with of both vehicle and trailer or GVM plus ATM However ATM is TBM plus GTM Therefore using simple maths GCM= GVM+ATM Substituting the two components that make up ATM We end up with GCM= GVM+ ATM+ TBM This proves mathematical that TBM must be part of the GCM equation Maths proves that TBM is part of GCM is doesn't come out of thin air
No, GCM is a maximum limit, as are GVM and ATM. GCM = GVM + ATM is incorrect. What is correct is: weight of vehicle + weight of trailer must be less than GCM The TBM is covered in the trailer weight already.
@@L2SFBC yes I realise they are maximum. Let me put it this way Let's use a Ford Ranger an an example. A Ranger has a Maximum GCM of 6000 Kg and can tow a maximum of 3500KG What I'm getting at is this. Let's assume the van is on the max at 3500 kg well that only leave 2500 Kg let for the vehicle. A Ranger has a kerb weight of 2200 or slightly less. The TBM is part of the ATM as it is GTM plus TBM. Assuming a 350lg TBM based on 10% that TBM is now part of the payload. When calculating the available GVM is it based on subtracting GTM or ATM from the 6000 kg. One will give you 2500 less tow ball the other is 2850 less tow ball so you are left with only 300 kg for payload on Ranger, or passengers etc Sorry if it's long winded, it's often hard to explain in writing I Think. Cheers
i just wanna know if i can tow 2 ppl 1 atv and 2 jet skis in my toyota tacoma trd sport 2wd v6 automatic.. i dont understand, my truck is rated for 6700 pounds towing capacity. that tells the buyer hey i can throw 6700 pounds on this baby and be good to go
We were considering a very nice caravan. So many rules and so confusing. An absolute waste of time. We did't bother in the end. The holiday would be over before we worked out what we could tow.
These rules are simply not safe. It would be far simpler and safer if the regulatories would wake up and put a simple but effective rule in place. Such as...No more than 85% of the prime movers GVM should be towed. This would give a very nice safety margin for all the idiot caravaners out there. Ask yourself this... Do you think it's a good idea to tow a load that is heavier than the actual tow vehicle? Did you know that Australia is one of the few countries in the world that actually allow this to be legal? Less is best, people.
@@L2SFBC for calculating the weight of the trailer.. u do not mysteriously double dip on the TBM..the weight of the trailer alreasy takes into account the entire weight... it's definitely bit correct in your example

Yes it would be
In above 3000/1500 = 2 but not 1.5 .
I did not get the calculation of 3000/1500=1.5 to calculate the effect to TBM on rear axle.
Means that with the 3000 / 1500 ratio you add about 1.5x the TBM to thr rear axle
In the example no.3 , for GCM calculation , Vehicle mass is 2400+300 kg is considered.
But it should be 2100+300=2400 kg.
Pl show us the calculation how much weight is reduced at the front axle.
Look at the Rear Axle Load video, all explained there
Could you give us the link please.
How does the calculation changes for front and rear axles of truck provided with 5th wheel and semitrailer .
On a truck, the fifth wheel (Turntable/ greasy plate) is ahead of the axle, not behind it. Same with a fifth wheel caravan. So some of the weight is shared by the front wheels.

Oh I see. The TBM is counted twice. It is part of the ATM, as well as forming part of the car's payload.

Maybe you can tow 6700lb. Depends on the other weights as per the video.

Yep..
we did the same . We considered a Caravan but ended up with a 10M motorhome built on a Merc truck chassis . We have everything with weight to spare
3000 / 1500 = 1.5 ?
50% extra on top of 100% = 1.5....sorry not very clear, but it does work out correctly.

The trailer mass takes 8nto account the TBM.. it's about weight distribution... u do not double dip...😂😂
Depends on which weight you're calculating. The TBM is at the same time part of the ATM but also factors in the car's payload.
