Dude was an all-Pennsylvania track guy before he played LB at Penn State. Man was an absolute physical freak, better coaching would’ve made him a hall of famer
This dude could have been the Von Miller of the 2000's had the Redskins used him as a pass rusher. He was a freak athlete with very good instinct on the football field.
I remember when he signed with the Giants I was super excited because Im a Giants fan. Then just when he was hitting his stride in NY and making big players, I believe week 4 or 5 in Dallas tears his achillies and his career ended... What a tragedy of what could have beeen.
I got to meet Mr Arrington outside of a game at fed ex one time near the exit the players left through and a lot of times would stop and sign some stuff it was like his 2nd maybe 3rd year or so and even though I was in cowboys stuff he was awesome to us I never gave up on my Cowboys (though maybe lavar was right we ain't won shit in my life lol) but I always had a soft spot for this dude just because of how incredibly nice he was to us I really enjoy now listening to dude on the radio before work HTTR Lavar
This guy is probably the most misused player in the history of linebackers. He was the next LT. Instead, they wanted to use him to cover the pass and fill running lanes.
Definitely should've been your classic Edge Rusher getting 15 sacks a season. I mean you could occasionally use him in those other situations but his primarily use should've been blitzing.
@@joemckim1183 , not EVEN blitzing. Go to a 3-4 defensive front and have Arrington coming off the edge as the 4th pass rusher. I can’t name another player coming out of college who had this much ability besides Lawrence Taylor and Derrick Thomas.
@@Joe-lu7mf Yea but they started dropping in him in coverage after he was getting double teams and line shifts and H-back chip blocked and all that and they had Carl Banks on the other side
It's funny that I found this video. I was just listening to sports radio this morning and the host mentioned that long interception he had against the Panthers during the '01 season as the turning point for the team which started 0-5 but finished 8-8 just missing the playoffs.
That was Norv Turners fault. When Lavar was drafted he put him in the strong side ., but Lavar is naturally a weak side backer who could’ve just wreaked havoc from there. I agree
It's because it was more of a passing league at the time .it was a few great running backs but for the most part it was a pass first league so pass rush was more applicable at the time . But in today's run heavy game he would dominate wit the blitz and stacking the box
One of the most memorable interviews ive seen. Maybe 15-20 years ago. lavar and interviewer are in his old neighborhood and theyre looking at a photo of his youth football team in think. he said some of the guys are gone and that he wasnt even the best athlete on his team. which is a sad and beautiful acknowledgement of how much some people have lost. And very few people know.
As a grown man ive realized the media did this guy so dirty. The fact that his smarts and his ability to think was questioned is crazy..that stuff would fly in the media now in days
LaVar Arrington's career is very similar to Sterling Sharpe's. Both only played 7 seasons but prior to that were on pace to being Hall of Famers. If they both were able to have gotten in another 3-4 years they probably could've been.
It's criminal to what the redskins coaching staff did to this mans career... Only 23 career sacks... Easily could have had over 100 if used as a 3-4 edge rusher
Probably the most misused linebacker in NFL history. I'm a Skins fan and it was infuriating how they used him. He was the next LT, but instead they kept trying to make him defend the pass and plug running lanes. It was bizarre.
Lavar went for the kill every hit Watch his film Then watch ray lewis. You’ll understand why Arrington had such a short career. Lewis had fineness Coming from a redskins fan
Too bad they kept changing defensive coaches and schemes almost every year back then. Arrington never had a chance to get comfortable in any system before they’d change to another one.
It’s a crying shame the way he was misused!! He would have been a prolific HOF linebacker like Lawrence Taylor!! The ego of Greg Williams ruined that great talent! Disgusting!
People don't realize he was a 3 time pro bowler, heard him called a bust before. Couldn't stay healthy, him and Ki-Jana Carter, apparently momma didn't give them milk growing up.2nd pick in the draft, Courtney Brown was first and he WAS a bust and I'm a PSU fan saying that.
Met LaVar more than once. My cousin was on the PSU team for four years while LaVar was there. They roomed one year. LaVar and Brandon short took the couch from my parents house when they were at PSU. Anyway, he is the best LB Penn state has ever had, followed closely by Paul poz. LaVar was the victim of that doofus Gregg Williams…I mean come on, who spells Greg with two G’s? Only a douche bag that’s what. LaVar was on a path to the hall of fame.
Un-coachable. Gregg Williams and Joe Gibbs couldn't wait to get this freelancing doofus out of town. Between Arrington and them....I think I trust Gibbs and Williams.
CORRECTION, the Redskins coaching staff lacked cerebral ability for not utilizing Arrington’s skills properly. Arrington should have been the 4th pass rusher, period.
Dude was seriously overrated. I'd go as far as to say the man sucked, he really sucked. I mean, think about it, his career highlights are basically a bunch of plays from one game haha.
at 260 he ran like a corner, way before his time athletically. Man was a beast
If he didn't get injured bro? Jus think of the implications.

@@Joseph-lz5er These days he'd miss a the rest of the season but be ready for camp the next year
I would have loved to see him on the Patriots. Belichick loves players like that who are great pass rushers but who can also drop in coverage
Von Miller??? Lol
Micah Parsons reminds me of Arrington for his versatility as a LB.
Both worn the legendary #11 at Penn State
Arrington works with Parsons

Yep, he had 9 sacks wen Marvin Lewis was the D coordinator that one year during the dark years with Spurrier 🙄

best college linebacker i ever saw. im 39. just saying
Literally rung Aikman’s bell into the retirement.
He was a monster. Just couldn’t read a playbook to save his life.
one the best linerbakers
Met him today. Super awesome guy.
Lavar Arrington was the first Jersey I owned
Same bro
Same
Glad I was either at the games well most of them at least and saw the rest on TV
He was my favorite redskin linebacker
I remember a lot of these plays...
he could've been the next LT if the redskins & giants turned him loose & let him play his way. 💯
LaVar Arrington's career is very similar to Sterling Sharpe's. Both only played 7 seasons but prior to that were on pace to being Hall of Famers. If they both were able to have gotten in another 3-4 years they probably could've been.
Not even close. He had 23 sacks and barely 400 tackles in 7 seasons. 3 int and 6 forced fumbles. Not even close. He was a god in college though.
Sterling Sharpe was much better than Arrington. You forget the expectations he had coming out of college. 2nd pick in the draft!
It's criminal to what the redskins coaching staff did to this mans career... Only 23 career sacks... Easily could have had over 100 if used as a 3-4 edge rusher
