Pre rendered cutscenes. They have been doing this trick since the ps1. The psp was impressive for the time it was like an above average ps2 with some of the best examples of working within hardware limits I've seen on a console.
@@liammccbyrne4184 Of course it was pre-rendered, but have you seen, what other games were doing with pre-rendered cutscenes back at that time? Nothing looked even CLOSE to as good as FF in literally every game

I love how between this and Kingdom Hearts, it’s firmly established that Sephiroth never starts a battle at full strength. He always holds back significantly, and as his opponent proves himself, he incrementally increases his power and effort.
Its has if he had some humanity a long time ago, but when he then met Jenova in her current state. I think that was breaking point of him wanting to seek revenge on not just shinra, but also the world too and try to make it back into a world for the Cetra to prosper again.
@@0GlassOfAcid0 yeah thats true but in reality, the sad part was that sephiroth got the wrong info about is true mother, Lucrecia Crescent is the biological mother of Sephiroth, but now rests in a secret cave encased in mako crystals She was once a Shinra scientist ..and is sad that sephiroth never found that out ...he just had the cells from jenova cuz his dumb ass father took the cells and implanted it to Lucrecia while she was pregnant. poor sephiroth was desperate to find his real family, his past and wanted to know where he came from so he thought jenova was his mom and that destroyed him thinking he was born a monster so thats why he turned evil cuz hes like well shes my mom i gotta finish what she started ..it sad when i see sephiroth if he only knew the truth =( ..he looks just like his mother too

The only two people Sephiroth ever trusted as friends. Once that trust disappeared, all he had left was his faith in his own humanity... and then even that was shattered in Nibelheim.
@@fiction5559 I feel Sephiroth was trying to build a relationship with Zack after losing his two friends. the Nibelheim incident (which Genesis technically was behind) was what ruined that. Had Genesis actually died, Sephiroth would have established a new brotherly relationship with Zack, and life would have turned out way differently.
Angeal is literally carrying a huge buster sword. Genesis' expertise is magics, you can see it on his saber. While Sephiroth is like the jack of all trades. His sword is like to meant for everything
Crisis Core. Showing that Sephiroth could be 'Human' and was capabile of being 'normal' before the truth was revealed. He really did snap badly didn't he...
It's not so much as realizing the truth, as it's more of Sephiroth not knowing the whole truth. Spoilers for those who never played the original PS1 FF7: He doesn't know who his Human birth Mother is: Lucrecia(if I remember correctly, doesn't even know Hojo is his Father.) The reason for his existance: A product of Hojo so that Hojo could brag that he was the greatest Scientist ever (basically to '1-Up against Professor Gast) The point of him being the General of the Soldier Program: to be used by Shinra as the ultimate weapon. He never got to realize any of those truths. He lost his mind the moment he believed he had a higher calling. When he started reading the experiments that made him in that Library in the Lockdown Mansion at Nibelheim. Sephiroth knew he was abnormal, but he didn't realize he was Alien-Level Abnormal. Literally, the idea of what his Alien mother was, an Alien parasite that travelled from planet to planet to drain the planet of it's life-source, use the dried out planet as a UFO via Meteor to travel the galaxy.. That Destiny was calling him, his Alien Mother,Jenova; got to his head and helped perceived himself as God. Throwing away his humanity, and decided to take his Alien mother's place as a World-Eater.
I love how all three of them had their own unique themes to each beat of the fight: Angeal: calm but exciting Genesis: rockin ready to go Sephiroth: you dun fucked up, the orchestra is here to back me up
Sephiroth's sword skills are elegant even left handed(which of course he is). While Cloud skill is about raw and direct power attack, he's is precise and fast moving. Angeal and Genesis is having hard but fun time trying to surpass him, he's kinda like dancing with it.
@@DoctorWhoKage nah.. I would say Zack, because without Zack's help and sacrifice Cloud wouldn't lived long enough to be the hero... Plus Zack and Aerith was Cloud's main motivation and inspiration to keep on fighting Sephiroth until he eventually win...
@Lockonese Even if this specific scene is pre-rendered the in game graphics were still no joke. Crisis is one of the best looking games put on the PSP. Sometimes it feels like I'm playing a triple A PS2 game from that era. The way you see moving reflections on the tile floors of the Shinra office, the way characters actually move and fight smoothly without looking like robots, and the fact that the PSP didn't freeze or noticeably slow down while handling all that crazy detail were all mind blowing things to witness on a handheld. It's a shame the PSP never really got the same recognition that the DS did over here in the states cuz that system had so much potential. Then Sony pretty much killed the Vita on arrival with their own hands and lost their chance at redemption by making Vita memory cards insanely expensive and necessary. The history of Sony handhelds is honestly tragic cuz they all had so much potential.
If Sony supported it better, it would have been a stronger competitor. They pretty much focused on porting ps2 franchises to the psp instead of originals.
When you realize the sephiroth had everything taken from him by shinra His closest friends dead. Finding out that his whole life he was bred to be the ultimate soldier. So all his hatred comes out and decides to get payback by destroying the planet. Crisis core was one of the greatest games in this universe.

I mean, i can see it as another propaganda for Shinra to look good, especially during the Wutai war, Sephiroth was just their strongest weapon and biggest form of intimidation, If you where with Shinra he would be “the hero”, but not in the “hopeful and traditional sense”, he’s basically a “war hero” who kills for “his country”(-really for his shinra company).
Yeah, he was a "good guy" right ? I never thought i see someone saying Shinra is a good guy cause Sephiroth was working with Shinra before his meltdown.
Its the worst part of this whole cutscene. 1. How would shooting the big fireball with a small fireball destroy them all? Sephiroth wasn't even hurt by being at the epicenter. 2. Why does Angeal sound generally unconcerned about it? 3. Why is the reasonable request of asking Genesis NOT to take that risk something "unheroic"? 4. Your point about point blanking him in the face like an asshole. Cool scene though regardless.
I love that as soon as Sephiroth goes on the offensive, everything starts breaking. Like, this mage knight starts using supercharged magic strikes and it dents the metal, and it's like "oh shit" Then Sephiroth just presses the attack button a couple times and the whole fucking cannon is in pieces.

@@Zephal42 To be fair, I think Sephiroth, Angeal, and Genesis were based off of the Black Mage, Blue Mage, and Red Mage respectively. Sephiroth casts Meteor which is a Black Mage exclusive, Angeal is copied into monsters which is probably derived from the Blue Mage's ability to copy monster abilities, and Genesis uses a sword and not very high class magic which is basically what the Red Mage does. I suppose Aerith is the White Mage seeing as she can cast Holy.
They’re reincorporating the events of Crisis Core and Before Crisis into Final Fantasy VII, considering the first part alone is just Midgar, I honestly expect when the entire flashback of everything that happened before Final Fantasy VII to actually be a game in itself and if not, a significant portion of one of them. Heck they’re already going to be adding Before Crisis elements into the Midgar part of the remake regarding The Turks and Avalanche so I have high hopes for at least some level of fan-service incorporated into this from Crisis Core.

It says a lot that when Angeal finally manages to break up the fight, while Sephiroth was all too willing to stop, Genesis wanted to keep it going. And the reason Angeal wanted to stop the fight because he knew *Genesis* would get out of hand. He fully trusted Sephiroth not to go overboard with the fight, and Sephiroth didn't.... well, not as much as Genesis did anyways. And he did still get the lecture.
There is also the fact that they're on something like the 40th floor of the shinra building and in reality they're in a small room, the combat simulator, that probably wasn't built for people like Sephiroth and Genesis having a full on fight and more for normal members of soldier or other shinra troops. At the rate they're going at it if that simulator/room failed they'd probably end up dropping a building on themselves.
In hindsight, Genesis' degredation made continuing the fight unwise. Even if Sephiroth held back and simply defended himself, he would have not only still suffered a wound but it could have been worse than what he did get. Genesis' pride was almost that of a Saiyan in Dragon Ball here.
It was a nice touch towards that fact that he chose to face Genesis when he broke up the fight. He had his back turned to Sephiroth that entire time, trusting him not to attack while Angeal's back was turned
SleepyGuy I love it when the characters point out epic instrumental or choral music before getting thrashed. It’s just something in the simplicity of it... like the guards who say “did you hear something?” As something just appears behind them and KOs both. It musta been the wind
Now imagine the opposite. *Gackt's Redemption starts playing* Sephiroth: Why do I hear J-Rock music? Genesis: REDEEEEEMPTIOOOOOONNNNNNNNN (those who don't get it: Genesis is modelled after J-Rock celebrity Gackt)
With how much we as a community have built him up as the 'Be-All-End-All Psychotic Mass Murderering Final Boss of Doom' - it gets hard to remember that at one point in his life, Sephiroth had been the kind of person that would sneak into a training facility after hours with his friends just to shoot the breeze and indulge in an off-the-books sparring match for the heck of it. Superhuman Jenova Enhanced Mako Warrior abilities aside, Sephiroth was really just a regular dude before he discovered the truth of his origins and snapped. A pretty stoic dude, but still just a dude.
Notice that when Angeal breaks up the fight because Genesis gets out of control, Angeal faces and blocked Genesis with his sword, exposing his back to Sephiroth. He was vulnerable from behind and trusted Sephiroth to remain calm and not hurt him. He knew Sephiroth had a head on his shoulders and was more balanced than the arrogant Genesis.
His mental state is probably 15x worse than sephy period. And he disappeared after crisis core and only reappeared in dirge of cerberus. We can only hope he committed suicide in the original timeline. I want to see what the remake does with him, but honestly he'd be crazier than barnabas.
yep. plus, I also see it like this Angeal stopped Genesis' sword swing cold with one arm with his ordinary sword He stopped Sephiroths sword with the far better buster sword, used his whole body to brace against the attack, and he still buckled a little bit. he needed the extra strength to stop Sephiroth
@@allengordon6929I personally think that after he came back from death in Dirge of Cerberus *and* after Deepground lost and the conflict ended, Genesis intended to personally change the timeline himself. He implied as much in Dirge of Cerberus' end credits scene, when he picks up Weiss' body (presumably to save him for some yet to be known purpose). And judging by how the remake *is* an altered version of the Final Fantasy VII story, it worked. I wonder how AVALANCHE will confront Genesis after defeating Sephiroth on that meteor or just before the end of the entire remake (not just the first part they released *and* Rebirth). Whatever the case, I believe that over the course of Rebirth or sometime after the events of Rebirth, Cloud will start to sense that something is very wrong with time because he, himself, was the crux of most of the events of the Final Fantasy VII games (with the exception of Crisis Core, the events of which he came pretty late and Dirge of Cerberus). Cloud could very well be the epicenter of a possible temporal crisis that Gaia is about to face. Something that's even worse than Sephiroth trying to destroy the planet...twice *and* the Deepground Conflict. It's something that, if they existed in the same universe, only The Doctor from Doctor Who could stop.
So Sephiroth is clearly a badass, but I think we should all stop for a second and appreciate the boldness of Genesis taking such a legend on and more so ANGEAL FOR THINKING HE COULD STOP BOTH!!
To be fair, Angeal *did* stop both, or at least snapped Sephiroth out of that fight that was going too far. Too bad Genesis is too dumb and prideful to know when to quit. He deserved that cut to the shoulder.
@@TheKalZul This is what happens when pure defense meets pure offense. Neither gains ground, but the defense can always halt the offense. Also why going on the offense against Sephiroth never got them anywhere, but defending until Sephiroth got cocky and screwed up is the only way to fight him.

Bluebird Grayson it was the reason crisis core still stands as one of the only games people still look at fondly in the compilation. The writing and acting could be a little meh at times but it added some great additions as well. Sephiroth went from a cartoon psycho to a tragic victim in one game. And zack ended up being so likable people still talk about him even though he was only meant to be a side character. It is implied also that weird mako shit occurred after his death which was the true cause of his memory muddling. Essentially meaning him and zack kinda fused. Thus explaining how he has memories he literally couldn’t have and can fight using techniques he never learned. It made it a more coherent story imo even with the weird retcons all over the place.

Bawa Pakhandi that’s a bit dramatic as zack only exists as part of clouds backstory and this game only exists due to ff7’s success and clouds popularity. Also cloud didn’t cause the scenario that killed zack. He was a victim too. That’s what made zack’s sacrifice beautiful. He did for cloud what Angeal would have done for him. He’s not even mad. Coming back to this after hearing the 2022 remaster just feels so good. The coldness in Sephiroth's voice in this is just perfect. I really want to like the new voice but I just cringe hearing how in his voice he's trying to imitate the old one.
George Newbern managed to add some otherworldly tone into his voice, which greatly fits Sephiroth. Unfortunately, this tone is lost in Tyler Hoeclin, something people have already noticed since FF7R.
@@adekaiwamisou disagree, I think the old voice acting had this theatricality to it. Which is perfect because genesis is a dramatic dude. Likes to quote poems and is into myths. The new voice just sounds generic and uninspired.
I have watched the English and Japanese versions of this fight so many times that I have lost track. It's interesting how the English translation changes some of the energy. Sephiroth is more bravado, more egotistical in the English version. He says to Angeal "Is that the best you can do?" which is a cut on Angeal's ability as a fighter. In the Japanese version he says, "Why don't you put that toy sword away," which is more an attempt to coax Angeal to go harder on him, to fight with his full power, that Sephiroth knows he is more powerful but has used the smaller sword because he's too focused on damage control. And, indeed, the smaller sword DOES seem like a toy sword because its shattering at the end is what causes Genesis's wounds and stirs the resentment that he just doesn't get over. In the Japanese, Genesis says he wants to be a hero. In the English version, Genesis says it's time for a new hero. The subtle difference is that the Japanese expresses a yearning and the English version expresses hubris. When Sephiroth says "come and try," in the English version, he is clearly lording his power and egging Genesis's hubris on. But in the Japanese, the energy is more of a consent to Genesis's desire to have an actual all-out contest between them. There are other differences, but these are the ones that stick out the most to me. In the English version, "all hail Sephiroth" is the energy, with Sephy himself being kind of a smug prick. In the Japanese version, we see a Sephiroth that just wants to measure himself against these two other friends, and let them measure themselves by him in return. I love the English voice acting, but I prefer the energy of the Japanese version better. It helps paint the picture of a soldier who was destined to be alone trying in his own way to form a bond with his peers. I wish he had been able to do it and keep it. If he had, maybe he would have seen something good about the world when he found out the truth, and not been so eager to just drop the fireball at his own feet.....
lmao i love how this is like actual friends playing and then it turns into a real fight angel in the back like "we was supposed to be having fun, it was just for fun"
3 badass, exceptionally powerful, and inhumanely strong men who have earned the title of first-class soldier. But, only one of them has his own theme song
Genesis: The world needs a new hero! Sephiroth: And Smash needs a new challenger... Genesis: What do you mean? Sephiroth: (Shows letter with Smash seal) Genesis: Aaaah! C¨mon!!
Sephiroth was a great Villain in FF7 but what im still impressed about is the Fact that i felt a lot of Symphathy for him as i played Crisis Core. That just shows how good the Storytelling is.
this is definitely one of the most pivotal scenes in the entire game (never played it, but watched all the cutscenes once!). this is crucial because it reveals sephiroth as human, as a brother. he didn't just appear human to the other soldier members, he was. this is important because when discovering the truth about everything - angeal, genesis, himself, his own origins - he is not simply arrogant with power because if his gifted inheritance; he is truly in pain because of what he lost. burning deep inside with violent anger. to me this goes to show there is only a certain amount of a lies, deceit and betrayal that one can take before just snapping, complete darkness and wrath and there is no turning back.
Yeah, it's a great way to show one party is giving it everything and the other is cruising, by having one grunting or loudly breathing and the other quiet as a church mouse save for maybe an annoyed grunt. They also did this when he fought Cloud in Advent Children. Sephiroth is silent and Cloud is sucking air constantly. Justice League is another good example, with Wonder Woman noisy as a train as she fights Supes and Supes totally silent except for one grunt of annoyance.
Back in the day when sephirot had somewhat a hint of a real ... family, even brothers in the 1st class soldiers. then he discovered what made them and went crazy.
@Aldo Ch Yeah Angeal and Sephiroth were both perfected subjects of their respective projects. Only difference being that I think Angeal's mom was given the Jenova cells while she was pregnant and Sephiroth was directly given the cells as a fetus. Either way Genesis was the only one of them that was degrading and in this fight it kinda shows that he's the weakest of the 3 hence why he's trying the hardest out of all of them. Sephiroth is barely trying and Angeal just brushes off Genesis's fire blast after taking it straight to the face and can still casually stop hits from both Genesis and Sephiroth at the same time at the end. I honestly really wish we could've seen Angeal vs Sephiroth cuz I really believe they were equals or at least super close to each other in strength and skill (closer than Genesis at least) and it would've been cool to see. Instead we got stuck with whiny and emo Genesis for most of the game though while Angeal basically committed suicide by Zack.
@@ozairchishti1264 I do agree with Angeal being closer to Sephiroth than Genesis, by miles honestly. But Sephiroth was always the highest class of the 3, even then. The problem was even if you could consider him having more raw physical strength than Seph, the speed and skill was way ahead. That's how he was able to brush off every swing, the way he holds his sword, where he takes the blow, how he deflects, Angeal could swing full force with both hands and Seph could still deflect it without any harm, just because of how he moves his sword. That's also why he was such a huge threat and it took cloud having like 8 swords, materia, and his ultimate skills to take him down. Hell, in advent children when he actually lost, I'd assume he was in a weakened state considering how he showed up. All that aside, I do like Angeal, and he's probably my favorite of the 3 by personality, he's the most real guy. But Seph is just fun to root for, he's the super strong bad guy that everyone wants.
@@MikuIsMine I do not think Angeal and Sephiroth should fight, it would be a pure fan service. In this scene we can see them as they are- buddies. And as sad as it is Genesis was the odd duck in. @@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley I'd love that and more too, but IMO to realize a game/story with Sephiroth as the central main character may overshadow the relevant rest of SE's like FFVII remake, or damage his rep if they made it as a lesser thing. I'm tired of these mutha sniffing snakes in mutha flucking Hollywood!
This popped up in my recommended, and oh the nostalgia. Though it’s weird seeing all the comments about Sephiroth easily overwhelming Genesis. Because honestly, it’s not like Genesis was getting demolished. Genesis unleashed his barrage, Sephiroth unleashed his, and then both of them were about to go at it. Would Sephiroth win? Probably, but Genesis was still SOLDIER First Class for a reason, and his magical aptitude would have certainly given him an advantage in the fight. And I’m surprised no one’s talking about how easily Angeal just stepped in and stopped their clash. Both of them were looking rather serious about it, but Angeal managed to effortlessly stop both of their attacks. So if you ask me, between the three of them, Sephiroth was obviously the best overall (his technique was unmatched), but Genesis was a cut above in terms of magic and Angeal had the raw physical strength.
Both Sephiroth and Genesis can use magic. However, Genesis had no advantage here. Sephiroth was playing defense for most of the fight. Literally the instant his music started playing, he went on the offensive and decisively pushed Genesis back, all without using magic.

PSP was the shit. This game, birth by sleep and god of war ghost of Sparta looked mindblowing on a handheld.
Psp what a system way before it's time. Highly underated at the time of it's release.
It’s nothing more than a pre-rendered video saved on the disc

It says a lot that when Angeal finally manages to break up the fight, while Sephiroth was all too willing to stop, Genesis wanted to keep it going. He fully trusted Sephiroth not to go overboard with the fight, and Sephiroth didn't.... well, not as much as Genesis did anyways. And he did still get the lecture.
Facts.
@@RossMitchellsProfile Meh just another day in the training room *cue audience laughter*

@@zovinchen3281 much agreed. Its hard to trump the original when he's already put in such stellar characterisation into Sephiroth with just his voice
sephs OG voice is just the best
Still, I think New genesis does a somewhat better job than this one.
In other words: The English dub sucks.

Sephiroth was a great Villain in FF7 but what im still impressed about is the Fact that i felt a lot of Symphathy for him as i played Crisis Core.
That just shows how good the Storytelling is.
Ff7 kinda painted him as a emo looking for his mum's approval. Crisis core made him into a proper character
Sephiroth as a character is great but as an antagonist is pretty shitty..... Kefka from FFVI is much better in terms of evildoer.

this is definitely one of the most pivotal scenes in the entire game (never played it, but watched all the cutscenes once!). this is crucial because it reveals sephiroth as human, as a brother. he didn't just appear human to the other soldier members, he was.
this is important because when discovering the truth about everything - angeal, genesis, himself, his own origins - he is not simply arrogant with power because if his gifted inheritance; he is truly in pain because of what he lost.

I also love Genesis' reaction. "I shouldn't have fucked around, I'm about to find out"
2:48 I've always loved that part. While Genesis is giving his all, Sephiroth was like: you're seriously make me put mild effort into this?

Yeah, it's a great way to show one party is giving it everything and the other is cruising, by having one grunting or loudly breathing and the other quiet as a church mouse save for maybe an annoyed grunt. They also did this when he fought Cloud in Advent Children. Sephiroth is silent and Cloud is sucking air constantly. Justice League is another good example, with Wonder Woman noisy as a train as she fights Supes and Supes totally silent except for one grunt of annoyance.
It's feels weird thinking about Sephiroth having friends that he hung out with.

And cooperating with sick scientists. But Genesis was right, he was the only one who survived till the end.
@@MikuIsMine I do not think Angeal and Sephiroth should fight, it would be a pure fan service. In this scene we can see them as they are- buddies. And as sad as it is Genesis was the odd duck in. We need a Sephiroth game. Where he came from how he became the hero his life his adventures. All the soldiers he fought or became friends with.
The wish has been granted
I would love this, but would we enjoy Sephiroth more or less if we knew everything about him? Frankly, I would enjoy him more. He mentions in Crisis Core thst he wished Professor Gast had told him more, and viewed the man as a father figure. I'd love to see that relationship. Also, little Sephiroth was likely adorable, lol.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley I'd love that and more too, but IMO to realize a game/story with Sephiroth as the central main character may overshadow the relevant rest of SE's like FFVII remake, or damage his rep if they made it as a lesser thing.

I’ll never get over when Sephiroth starts to even go on the offensive just a little, he casually is destroying the cannon in the process like nothing.
Even Genesis was like : - TF bro ?
@@kaihedgie1747 he still grunted after Genesis's first onslaught though.
