BluePaperMoon - I still cant cut the perfect square, the large pink square at the end is of by 3-4mm which is annoying but i can still work with it. A few tips, 1. Your square does not need to be 100% perfectly square for box pleated models, why?. Box Pleating "never" requires the use of a full diagonal crease, i have never seen that or came across that. Your square can be of by atleast 1cm and it will still be fine. The paper for my tow mater was of by 1.5 cm yet yet it turned out amazing :). 2. Get a square that is already perfectly square, blutac the 4 corners and 4 middle sections on the outside. Press that sheet onto the sheet you want to cut from firmly and just cut around it, It will be near enough perfect. It works better with double tissue than single tissue :) Hope that helps!
FearlessFlourish Sorry for the late reply but thanks! :) I have absolutely NEVER worked with Methyl Cellucose aka MC so I'm a little afraid to make double tissue though I am willing to try it out lol Where can I purchase MC and what are the casual prices? Thanks in advance ^^
BluePaperMoon Ive left links in the description as to where to buy them :), making double tissue is easy, may take a few attempts to get the hang of it but once you do, you will never look back. As for the prices, they vary slightly, for mine, it was roughly £4 per 125g box of mc, i bought 4 at once and cost roughly£10 - £14 postage so a total of approx £26. One box does last a very long time so it is worth it :)
Deffinetly!, still not found a decent way to make a solid 2 coloured paper where the colours dont come slightly through each other, got a few ideas still to try :)
Thank you so much ^^ I live in a third world country, and it seemed it would be impossible to get good paper I saw in UA-cam videos, (I was pointed to shadow paper) But now looking more into it, I have found double tissue! Seems pretty affordable, and a lot of more experienced people seem to fold with this (I was pointed to Flickr for models where people link what paper they used), and I am thankful to you for making such a good tutorial for it!
Once i made the realistic praying mantis my robert j lang with homemade tissue foil and 2 of his realistic scorpions with homemade tissue foil but my dads dog literally ate it...
First time I see somebody showing how he treats his papers with MC. I personally don't like double tissue, but more props to you dude, seems like you have perfected your technique quite well. By the way, I'm sure I've seen your photos in Flickr, but totally forgot your user name.
esdras santiago Thanks! :D, double tissue is a great paper once you know how to use it, it really does work wonders :). Glad you have seen my flickr but i dont post new pictures on there until iv'e made a video and uploaded it here first, i have a ton of models to show! Here is my flickr page to remind you :) - www.flickr.com/photos/96540522@N07/page1/
I like double tissue, but even then sometimes it's still too thick for some insect, like Mabona's Mantis. Besides, how do you shape the paper using MC without making the paper tear and wrinkle like crazy?
Malleonardone You use single tissue for insects, no matter how complex it is. I'm using single for kamias new praying mantis because i know il be able to make the legs super thin and hid all extra layers, make it look lifelike. I dont shape with MC, i use glue first to hold all the layers together which adds strength, only glue on the inside so i don't leave glue marks, then i use water to finish which will dry solid and will leave zero glue marks :)
Hey, I think you posted a link to how you make your MC glue in one of the replies, but the video is unavailable. Is there any chance of you reuploading/remaking the video? Cheers. I’d also like to know whether I can take the same “recipe” and do the same thing for CMC glue, as that’s what I have with me right now (i.e. if your recipe calls for x ml of water and y ml of MC, can I use x ml of water and y ml of CMC instead?)
hello! i have some questions wich proportion of water and MC? wich mark of glue do you use? is the paper soft after the covering? at my first try i use polyvinyl acetate glue, and ruined it the paper(( tryed to fold phoenix satoshy ,and cant fold correctly ,cause paper has become brittle
Origamist Yeah, it took me awhile to figure out a good way to sort of apply the paper onto the glue with least amount of wrinkles, best method by far. The sheet i was making was just a quick test for this video, that's why there are so many wrinkles :). Best way to get rid of wrinkles is to apply alot of pressure when putting the paper onto the glass with the tube method, this forces out all the excess glue and air pockets making your first sheet 99% wrinkle free. Repeat the same steps for however many sheets you will be using. Also, use some sort of scraper as i do in the video, apply even pressure on both sides of it which will again force out any air pockets and extra glue. Hope that helps! :)
I have question. what can I do to prevent the paper from sticking to the glass. I've ruined 2 papers trying to peel it off once dried. I'm starting to get frustrated
dont worry, i got you covered, making a tips n tricks for making paper :). Definitely leave a part of the glass dry from mc, put the paper on and apply mc as normal but only cover the top 90% of the paper, meaning the bottom 10% of the sheet will be completely dry, no mc below or above that part so you can easily lift it up when its fully dry & peel it of without any problems, hope that helped :D
I think it does, having the mc to thin will result in a weak batch which will give a less crispiness & strength in the paper after using and drying, same with to thick, can result in a non even layer of mc, honestly never used it thick so not sure on that one. You want to find the right balance between thin and thick which will give the paper perfect crisp and strength. I did make a tutorial on how i make my mc glue, that could help you aswell :) ua-cam.com/video/229ns145Tjo/v-deo.html&lc=z12wutz5woishjwxx04cehiyxrrrgpwr5as
It does sorta hold itself together when you form the cube, depending how you collapse it, but yes i used glue & would highly recommend it to achieve the best result :)
+JonathanShSl Had it for ages, not sure where i got it. All you need is a large piece of glass, i ordered a 100x100cm square of glass from a local glass shop, you should try that :)
JonathanShSl Order a size that you will definitely need, no point in ordering a 50x50cm glass square if you want to make 70x70cm square sheet, just letting you know :)
+FearlessFlourish ive already looked for some in the past at Idee (my local art supply store) and they dont have anything, not even 50x50cm. Do you think a large picture frame will work?
KAKAPOOPOOHEAD xD Thanbks! :D. The dice is relatively simple, more of an intermediate difficulty, but the hard/tricky parts are collapsing the cp, making the 5 and 6 side and finally folding it into a dice. There are no diagrams for that model as far as i know of :(
@@cptlevi2951 No my mc is as thick as treacle ( even thicker) and I do not even have glass but a tray. You need to wait for it to dry properly or be more careful. It will reduce the quality of the paper making it less crisp.

J daton no, its a waterbased glue i use, it disolves into a liquid basicly when you re apply water, just have to apply a bit of pressure when washing to fully remove it :)

Also, If you're worrying about paper are you really sure you're ready for Ryujin? You'll soon have much bigger things to worry about
3l3c7r0 gamplays If you do use 3m x 3m paper, because there will be so much paper, the weight will be very heavy when collapsed so you will need to compact the model with wire or something to keep it up/hold its shape :)
+FearlessFlourish I think you have to use wire anyways. Ryujins are very heavy from my experience so you have to use wire to pose it if you want it to look good and not like a fat snake with arms :)
