My dad was Mousey, Al Ostrowsky, who owed Mouseys Bar at 1102 Hennepin for many many years until it was burned down , a result of arson. One of our employees died in the fire. I worked there for a number of years. His bar was by far tougher then Mobys and got the extreme number of police calls each year. However, this does not get mentioned as my dad took care of the trouble himself. He did not have bouncers. If someone was a bad actor, Mousey would pick him up off his feet, brace him against a wall, put a .357 in his mouth, and tell him not to come back. There are so many stories attached to my dad and this bar....did you ever hear the one about Ice Pick Willy.............? We have lost so many wonderful characters of the old Hennepin Avenue era. Much gratitude to all who work to keep the old escapades and culture alive.
I grew up in minneapolis (born 1944)...eugene field, ramsey and washburn high. my paper route was on portand ave.and on chicago avenue the old parkway theater is still there. My brother and i use to go there in the early fifties for 9 cents on a saturday afternoon. Fond memories!
What ever happened to the weather ball? As a young child in the early 50s, our apartment in Fairview Park looked out toward the city... and a clearly in view Weather Ball above a billboard.
It survived the fire and was stored for many years while its fate was considered. Sadly, it rusted too much to be recoverable. forgottenminnesota.com/blog/2012/03/170
The NW weather ball was removed after the bank building burned mid-1980's. It was stored at the Minnesota State Fair but was never re-erected. Eventually it was scrapped :/

Those were the great times! Heidi Collins!😁😍👍
Makes me wish I had taken photographs when I first lived in Mpls.
Even as a kid in the 80s in northeast Mpls, I find myself homesick for a place that doesn't exist anymore.
I lived up there with my girlfriend in the late 80's and early 90's, a lot has changed since then and not for the better it seems.
I can honestly say, I've had a drink in Mobys and saw Henry Fonda in his one-man "Clarence Darrow" act at the old Guthrie.
Now because of the riots we need a new video 😔😔

Nostalgia is Greek for the "pain" (algos) of not being able to return home.
