Me: thinking about how unlikely it is to win a pair of shoes Also me: Wins pair of shoes literally 10 seconds later 😎 So stoked Nick! Thanks so much!!!! Made my day, heck, maybe even my month!
this isn't easy to answer. it takes a long time to learn these things. however, if you're "burning out" you'll eventually get injured. if you're handling your mileage for 3 weeks and still improving, you more than likely aren't doing too much (burning out). if, after 3 weeks of a new training block you're dead tired and feeling tweaks here and there (tight spots that aren't normally tight, sore spots that aren't usually sore) and even feeling sick, you may be burning out. you're going to have to learn your own body and that's just as difficult as any training you can do
tired means you're physically worn out from exercise but the motivation to improve is still there. think of it as a 'good soreness'. burnt out means your body is breaking down and mentally you're questioning yourself and your choices. for me that line is like, 4 miles a week XD
Nick you've quickly become a role model for me over this past year since I found your channel. You've really done a great job at educating and informing young individuals such as myself. Just wanted to say thanks!
Wow I really appreciate this message and am very happy to hear you have found this videos helpful. It is fun for me to pass on the knowledge that I picked up over 20 year of competitive running!
Please make a video on how you structured a week of training, how much quality speed work, easy runs, threshold etc and what would the workouts look like? Love your channel!!!
great point, runners can get so focused on improving and being at their best that they can miss their own signs of burnout, and a good coach can help with that
Within my first 6 months running, I was up to 60 miles. And stuck at an average of 60 miles, sometimes getting up to low 70s at peak mileage over the summer. And a little over three years in, now a D1 runner, I'm still between 60-70. But I'll probably be adding on some miles this coming summer.
Was running 12 miles a week. Followed your ebook. Now hitting 20 miles a week and Weight lifting twice-thrice a week. Training to reach 25 miles per week by April.
Good info! What's been important for me is not just thinking about mileage but also intensity. Training for the 5k in high school, I only ran 30ish miles per week, but that was doing two interval sessions and a hard long run every week. A few years later training for the marathon, I've essentially doubled my volume, but I only do speedwork once per week and even my long run is at a fairly comfortable pace minus the occasional fast finish.
Dude, I don't think I have ever seen a Carotid Artery that pronounced. I think the lighting is exaggerating it. It is kinda freekin me out. I love your videos, keep them coming. Your awesome. You inspire me to run more, and I just signed up for Instagram for the first time ever just because of your shoes. - thanks from Sgt4man
Thank you for the excellent content Nick! I am glad that there runners like you to advise runners of ages. Love your commitment to excellence, to business success and to the running/health community!
I’m trying to be the best runner I possibly can but I don’t have a coach and I don’t think I can get one so I’m happy for all the tips from you on how to be our own coach I guess😄 Do you think you can become a good runner alone?
I worked up to 30 miles a week taking one day off weekly and for me thats alot. I also know that if i run at a certain pace on up i get pain... But if i leave my ego at home and do a moderate mid range pace i have no pain and no injury.
Awesome stuff Nick! Could maybe summarize with; continually work to know yourself, get a coach, and be transparent with that coach? As for the 100 miles a week... it's true, go through shoes like run gum! ;) Literally buy based how long the shoes look like they will last to try and save money. haha
Do you think it is better to do weight/ strength training on hard days or easy days? How many times a week do you recommend to do weights for a high school runner?
What if someone is doing cross training nearly everyday like swimming or biking? How should somebody handle their mileage if their doing cross training
I have the same question. Running is my favorite sport but I also love to go mountain biking and that is really tiring so can’t run and mtb in the same day.
I've always wanted to b able to run, not necessarily sprint but just run a steady pace for a decent distance, little bit of back story on me, I was born with spina bifida so my legs r weak and often have pain n my joints, when I was young I could run and play, I'd often go play basketball with friends but when I was done my joints would hurt so bad my mom would have to carry me into the house (I was 10 or younger). After a few surgeries on my ankles I was n a wheelchair for a few months, my mom got me a Playstation bcuz I was unable to do active things at the time and from that point of I've been n a decline, I'm 6'1 260 lbs, probably 40 lbs overweight which doesn't help with running, my lung capacity is garbage, last time I went to a track I was only able to run 100 meters and I worked my way up to 200 meters b4 I was out of breath! I'd b really happy if I could just make 1 lap, a mile would b great but thats shooting awfully high at this time... anyways, idk y I decided to share this with u but if u got any tips to help me out with this goal of being able to at least make a full 400 that'd b cool
Spina bifida probably needs way more specific advice but try a type of cross training that doesn't hurt or endanger you like biking and jf you can work up to a couple minutes on the bike then it should help you complete the 400. Good luck!
@@yaseenabdalla8713 I can bike forever! I used to bike around a loop here where I live, its 10 miles all the way around! I agree biking will help but it doesn't seem to increase my stamina much for running, I guess I just gotta start out doing what I can and it'll improve over time, run a little, bike a little, swim a little and maybe I'll get to that point
@@Q123-t3t If u don't have a coach then just start from scratch.(if ur a Begin) Do maybe 1 or 2 mile a day then build up day by day with patience. Once u get faster then you'll be able to start doing different and more intense workouts
Bruh my coach told me to run 300 miles this summer if I have a chance of getting in varsity this year for cross country, but I'm down for the challenge
@@charlesevanspope true, I mean the running part is never the most difficult, it's just waking up and going out that's the hardest, but sleeping in all day won't get me anywhere, so gotta put in that grind 💯💯💯😤
hey nick how can a distance runner become faster? I know strides work but is there any thing else distance runners can use to target fast-twitch muscle fibers to gain middle distance/all out sprinting speed?
Hey Nick, since the start of 2021 I've been running a little over 80km a week (50miles) and up until now I've never really gone over 65-70km a week. Since I've started doing the higher mileage I've felt tired most days and I struggle with any faster paced session that I do. I was wondering if this is too much mileage for me because I cant really do much more than easy or tempo runs right now. I dont feel burnt out like you said in the video but I feel tired and like I cant go in any way fast. I'm 16 by the way
Honestly I’d recommend you take it down a bit. If it’s like that it could still lead to injury I’d come down a bit for a couple weeks. When you start feeling good again then take it up slowly.
Hey Nick! Random question but I saw this video talking about the Nike Viperfly 100m spikes and how they could potentially change sprinting times in the future. I dont know how much you know about those shoes inparticular but I would be very interested in knowing what your thoughts are on them and running shoe innovation in general. I hope all is well 🙏🏻.
