The original is a little more see-through than the reproduction veil. I can still see through it pretty easily although it does darken things quite a bit. Thanks for watching!
It's a lot of looking at originals. The pattern I used (Timely Tresses' Clara Christine) had the buckram curtain as one of the pieces. It seems they were common in the later part of the 1860s. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Silk crepe. It's not quite like original silk crape (which was finer, lighter, and more see through than modern stuff) but the closest I've been able to find. It has the right texture. This is the stuff I bought: www.etsy.com/listing/625537924/black-crinkle-silk-crepe-fabric?ref=yr_purchases.
The silk crepe I found is much thicker than original silk crepe (I don't think I showed my original mourning bonnet with veil in this video, unfortunately) so the 'real thing' was much lighter and more see through which is why it was sometimes doubled. Veils are super common as the 19th century of sunglasses (shade for the eyes), fashion, etc but typically they are not as thick as mourning veils are. Hope this helps!
Valuable video. You're so heavily veiled. Was this one in 19th century very thick too? Can you see through this veil easily?

Awesome video! Where do you get information on bonnets? I didn’t know bonnet curtains were a thing.

I didn't catch what fabric did you use for the veil?

Did women wear such a thick veil only during mourning? If not, then where else? Thank you in advance for your answer!
