Two absolutely staggering tone-poems, the first of which is utterly exquisite in its marriage of liturgy and nature, and anticipates so many later composers too numerous to mention. The second is a dramatic/romantic sea evocation, still with spiritual undertones but less obviously so. "La Predication Aux Oiseaux" though....what an amazing piece!!

Noseda's recording is the best when it comes to St. Francois de Paule.
Actually, James Conlon's version is the best ----->> on UA-cam: Liszt 2 Légendes S354 : II St Francis de Paule Walking on the Water (orchestra)

Indeed, Debussy was enthralled and profoundly influenced by Liszt's innovations. Liszt was light-years ahead of his time.
