Makatoo Rhapsody
Composer:Che-Yi, Lee
Commissioned by the Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra in 1999, “Makatou Rhapsody” was well received at its premiere due to its vitality and strong grassroots flavor. It was rewritten as an orchestral performance in January 2007.
Taiwan’s indigenous peoples include communities that have traditionally lived on mountains, and those that have lived on plains and other low-lying areas of Taiwan’s islands. Many plains-dwelling indigenous peoples who lived near the coastline when early Dutch and Han immigrants arrived adopted the practices of those settlers.
Today, there are 16 officially recognized mountain-dwelling indigenous peoples in Taiwan. However, due to the history of assimilation the exact number of Taiwan’s plains-dwelling indigenous peoples is debated. There are believed to be anywhere from eight to twelve distinct plains peoples, and each community has its own language, songs and other cultural traditions, which are passed down orally by community elders.
This composition is based on two traditional songs used for prayer and sacrifice by plains indigenous peoples. It builds on the beauty of the original melody through orchestration and the integration of worldly rhythms.
