Can't believe ITV plc have actually allowed Yorkshire and the North west to retain their original regional news names!

@@entertain1048 yeah, in fairness Calendar and Lookaround are pretty neutral names when it comes down it. But Granada Reports is literally a direct reference to the old regional ITV setup. Thought ITV plc would want to avoid that at all costs lol.

The very first clip with the hand flicking the paper pad spelling Calander was my uncle Raymond's hand who worked there for many years as a cameraman till he retired

fun fact: one of the presenters "richard whitley" was the presenter of the C4 Gameshow Countdown. which started in 1982 following the "Countdown" to channel 4's launch

The graphics at 0:22 are like 'First Tuesday' intro version for 1982, makes sense as both programmes are by Yorkshire and are news / current affairs related

North Norfolk was forgotten about by Yorkshire when they took over the Belmont ITV service from Anglia.

I stopped watching / listening to Calendar News when the broadcaster replaced the " Trumpets and ..." can`t remember the last word to the tune but it corresponds with the thum flicking through the calendar.

Never understood how North Norfolk came under Yorkshire Television network.

Grampian TV covered not only the Grampian region, or the Grampian mountains, but also the Highlands and Islands, Tayside, and parts of Fife. Scottish Television only covered part of Scotland. Does it matter?

It’s a result of how tv transmitters work. North Norfolk got a far clearer signal from the Belmont transmitter near Louth, Lincolnshire thanks to a combination of its’ power and the flat south Lincolnshire countryside and the obstacle free Wash next to it than it did from nearer transmitters at Sandy Heath and Mendlesham.
This was not a problem when all three transmitted ITV services from Anglia Television but in 1974 Belmont was reallocated to Yorkshire Television which meant that anyone getting pictures from Belmont now got them from YTV, and this included North Norfolk. You could still get Anglia in this area but the reception was not as good.
Efforts were made to boost local relays to allow the folk of North Norfolk to get Anglia and this was largely resolved by the mid-80s, giving them the choice but because the area was officially served by Belmont and this was allocated to Yorkshire TV, North Norfolk remained officially part of the YTV contract area.
Rumour has it that one of the more vocal critics - in private of course - of the 1974 change was Prince Phillip who was annoyed to no longer receive clear pictures of Anglia when the royals were in residence at Sandringham. It is believed he may have had something to do with overcoming the IBA’s initial reluctant to fit relay transmitters in the area to boost the Anglia signal…

@@nkt1"Grampian" region didn't go back to the early days of Scotland as a nation. Yorkshire has a 1000 year history- and didn't include King's Lynn, or anywhere near it. Because of the Pennines, some areas of Yorkshire had Granada TV after 1968- and North Yorkshire had stronger reception of Tyne Tees than Yorkshire TV- but the Belmont Transmitter should have been for Anglia or Central, not Yorkshire.

The third intro with the camera panning round the studio reminded me of Dansk Radio's TV-Avisen from 1983: ua-cam.com/video/I0gcanBqK6s/v-deo.html

BBC Sixty Minutes 'Look North West' intro 1983-84 featured a camera tracking in the studio towards the programme logo on the wall behind the presenter. Don't know of other Sixty minutes regional magazines that used this approach, but a bit like the 'Calendar' intro here
