I always like the videos when UA-camrs have on dealers, eBay sellers and LCS owners. It’s interesting to hear what’s selling? What trends are they seeing? Are people buying packs, singles, sets? What eras are popular after ultra modern? I think we all get caught up in the raw data sometimes, which is helpful. But it could be misleading as the dealers and LCS guys are on the front line as to what is actually selling.
I’m 42, totally agree about the nostalgia. It’s been actually great getting back into cards. I collected in the late 80’s and all of 90’s. Now just got back into it in May of 2024.
I remember the 1980s hobby quite well and why I made the transition to vintage in 1994. For me personally, sports cards became the outlet I needed to deal with my disability and the fact that I wasn't getting the education I wanted due to that fact. The cards eventually became my second education. Not long ago I opened several packs of 1986 Donruss. I hadn't opened a pack of cards since 1994 and it brought back just a flood of memories of my childhood.
I collected cards as a kid/teenager. But really hadn’t messed with it much in a long time. In the summer of 2021 I had a friend that called me that knew I had a lot of cards. She called to tell me about an antique mall in the area that had a lot of cards. I didn’t go until Jan of 2022. That day they had an autographed Joe Montana jersey that I purchased. The next day Burrow beat MaHomes to go to the Super Bowl. That night I watched Burrow’s rookie cards go crazy. And I’ve been back into cards since that weekend almost 3 years ago
I started collecting sports cards and comics all in the same year; early 1988 cards, late 1988 comic books. It was after middle school ended on that day, 14 1/2 years old kid. My friend's friend introduced a store not to far from the school. They sold comic books and sports cards. I didn't bother with the books, we all went for the cards. It was 1988 Fleer basketball. 2nd year Jordans, rookies of Rodman, etc. Pulled like 7 Jordans, and bunch of rookies. Later during the early 1990s, fantasy artwork on cards like Boris was a thing for me. As well as MacFarlane's Spider-Man and Lee's X-Men. During August of 1988 while playing Street Fighter 2 game with my friend Quy, at 7-11. I noticed an interesting drawing on a cartoon book. It was Uncanny X-Men #247 - newsstand version. Went home placed the book on the desk.. after getting ready to sleep, i turned the radio lightly on and read the book for over 30 minutes, appreciating the artwork. But the storyline hit me hard. Heroes risking their lives for people who rather kill them forc existing.
Dude I’d love to talk to you on your show. I got back into cards after 25 years. But it was after I first got into the nostalgia of picking up my old Transformers, He-Man, Voltron etc. I even have a small “toy and card” room in the basement of my house. It’s nostalgia overload!
Im about the same age as you. But in Canada our hockey junk wax era started a bit later, as we always get stuff later. But it came too, and I was into it. Then when I was a teenager, I gave up sports cards as many teenagers did at the time. Fast forward to 2010, I go into the local card store for some penny sleeves. There are some discounted blaster boxes. I pull a rare rookie of a player who never amounted to anything but was supposed to be the next Moses Malone. I was back! But over the years, I’d grab a hobby box here and there every year, always looking for the hot rookie, but never getting them…I got a bit tired of it. I transitioned to Vintage in 2017. That was cool because I was finally getting something for my money. Guy Lafleur will always be a legend. That’s still my thing. But I got concurrently back into the modern stuff too in 2021, as the Montreal Canadiens has some good rookies. But I’ve learned my lesson. Watch the boxes. They’re financial poison. Fast forward, I’ve been trying to buy big lots with some cards I like. I can sell the rest to keep myself in check and make a bit of money.
I grew up in a Cleveland suburb and loved the Cavaliers in the Mark Price days--a.k.a. "the Michael Jordan days" if you didn't grow up in Cleveland. I watched or listened to every game and kept a handwritten game log on a piece of notebook paper that I taped on the wall next to my bed. Then parlayed my interest in the Cavaliers into spending a major chunk of my money (the money that I wasn't spending on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Archie comic books) on packs of 1989-90 NBA Hoops cards. This lasted three years, before my interest in cards, the NBA, and sports in general, waned. Now I'm 43, and am discovering for the first time in life that hockey is dope. I just bought a retail box of hockey cards--not so much for collecting, though now I'm starting to become a bit interested in that too. But I'm enjoying having this stack of cards on my desk while I watch the games, and looking at the backs of the cards of these dudes as I watch them.
Nice video. I have always loved collecting everything here in the states but from 85 to 89 my parents took me to Mexico and in our hometown in Guanajuato close by where the great Valenzuela was discover playing for the silao tuzos most of our Town was a Valenzuela fan and Dodgers so when I came back in 89 one day my little brother came back with a 1990 Topps pack and got hooked didnt know cards existed so i collected as much as i coud than i stopped collecting 94 in high School until 2003 when one day i went to but some beer at a small and saw the 2003 Topps and since another mexican pitcher was big at the time Esteban loaiza i wanted a card of him i did get him and Martinez in one pack so i havent stopped since. 21 straigt years.
I’m 24, and have collected hockey cards for the entirety of my life. Got more into football cards around 2019 when I discovered pack openings and started to understand how football cards worked. My parents used to sell cards on eBay when I was really young, so I grew up around the hobby and met tons of wonderful people that I still deal with today. My nostalgia with sports cards might not be popular… I understand that it’s far from a Gretzky Rookie. But still, I can’t help but smile when I think about buying 2009-10 Collectors Choice hockey packs at the local Dollar Tree. I think of how lively the local mall shows were compared to the ones around me nowadays. I’m not here to flip cards or make money. I keep 99% of my hits, and that 1% usually gets traded for other cards I have more interest in. I just really enjoy shiny cardboard with pictures of guys I looked up to growing up. Sorry if this isn’t an interesting story… I just look at as one screw that helps keep this ship afloat.
Pack opening good for content creation because it tells a story, script writing is impossible for the meat of the video, not editing once the packs are being opened is ok because it shows your not seeding the packs, and their is a chance of hitting something big. Hitting something big is a double positive because the host’s reaction is video gold plus the value of the card. Unfortunately the cost of fresh product is pricing creators out. New product especially new hobby boxes get the most views and if you pre order and the release date gets pushed back, your video schedule for that product is pushed back. (2024 Prizm Draft football Hobby is my final straw in that department). I think I’m gonna pull out of sports cards content creation and make stop motion music videos of songs in the UA-cam audio library. Although time consuming it’s more reliable and cost effective. I don’t open packs off camera so perhaps I will incorporate it however it has to stop being my go to. Good video, thought provoking for sure hence the long response, well done! 🔥👻🔥
I got back in because I had a high end MJ that got water damaged when we moved. I was really young can’t remember which card. I just know Beckett Price Guide said it was worth 1000 back then and it wasn’t his rookie card. I was like 10 I had no idea what I was looking at.
What’s the difference between nostalgia and just continuing to “like something?” I watch almost every video of yours Dustin but this is Vlog content. Jeremy’s one of my top guys I watch on UA-cam but my takeaway from you video is only that you’ve recently talked with Jeremy and compared and contrasted what you like about each others channels. If I heard correctly. Then about stranger things cards etc and nostalgia. I mean I’m still wondering what’s missing?? lol What’s missing imo is if you or a content creator contacts an OG collector. My dad passed in 2009 and collect Terry Glenn and managed an Irving. That’s all he did. I’ve since inherited his collection but he didn’t go on social media or even think about positing photos of cards or videos etc He had a penpal in Michigan/halfway across the country and he would record him see talk on a portable tape recorder. Then they’d mail each other the tapes/cassettes and get them roughly a week later. Then listen in the Monte Carlo Those stories don’t sell though and there far and few in between these days
I hear ya TJ about these stories ‘not selling’ compared to hobby scam videos or whatever, but I still want to make them regardless of view counts. I think they are important stories to share and not hearing them anywhere
This is a very cool story of what’s out there, I love it. And you’re right, content creators never share this side of collecting and these types of stories at all. Collectors side of hobby content is mainstream focused and few and far between. The details are left out due to boredom and few clicks. Soooo much is focused on gambling side, flipping, scams, news stories, etc. sad if you think about it.

Collected mostly baseball, basketball and marvel cards back then and back into those again 😊

We need more card factory videos. Some tours and insight from insiders would be great.
