15:25 let’s also not forget that he saw her as property. In chapter 26 he thinks to himself that he liked the circumstances when she was locked in the Capitol zoo because then he knew where she was, what she was doing and who she was with.
Loved the book and I love the movie, but my love for the movie is more of a “love by default” since it’s the only film adaptation we have on the book. I agree too, it is the worst of all 5 Hunger Games movies. I hope Sunrise On The Reaping is better in its film adaptation but I’m not gonna let said hopes get too high.

I'd also say that Sunrise would have a chance of getting a better adaptation, but yeah, I'll keep my expectations in check lol

Rachel Zegler is pitch perfect casting as Lucy Gray Baird she captures the essence and the spirit of the character and played her flawlessly

The Ballad of Lucy Gray is actually a real ballad written back in 1799 by William Wordsworth about a girl named Lucy Gray who disappears in a snowstorm, with no-one knowing if she died or if she just went somewhere and never returned; so Suzanne pretty much told us Lucy Gray's fate as soon as we learned her name.
As for Lucy Gray's connection to Katniss: I don't personally believe they're related. I do however think it's highly likely that Maude Ivory is Katniss' grandmother on her father's side. Maude Ivory was described to have a beautiful voice and the ability to remember any song after one listen, traits that both Katniss and her dad possess. That, combined with Katniss' dad knowing of, and showing Katniss, the small house by the lake, as well as carrying knowledge of native flora and hunting skills that are similar to that of the Covey, and that aren't really exhibited by anyone else in district 12, are some pretty good signs that Katniss is at the very least related to someone in the Covey. It's also worth bringing up that the hanging tree was only performed live once, on the head peacemakers birthday party, so unless one of Katniss' dads parents was a peacekeeper, he most likely would have learned the song from growing up with a Covey parent (probably Maude Ivory as she's the Covey member who's most likely to remember the song).

THIS IS WHY WE NEED THE FOUR HOUR CUT. If you didn’t know they is a mythical 4 hr cut that was tested on audiences but was deemed too long.
Also 13:00 it is explicit, “yknow my father bought him for me? To teach me I could never go back to 2”

Fantastic book read it on release weekend wearing my covid mask to the book store to pick it up when I was in Grade 11. I saw the movie twice in theaters and really enjoyed it. I'm excited about the new book this March, which is getting a film adaptation slated for November 2026. My only issue with both the book and film was the third act feeling rushed.

This video was fantastic! I will say though, I do disagree with your ending point about wanting Corio to start off optimistic like Segeanus and then descend into his villainy. I disagree because honestly, the way he is currently written is far more in line with real world people. People who end up in powerful, authoritarian positions in life, HAVE all of the qualities of Snow. They have a feeling of contempt and disregard for the feelings and needs of other people. They are selfish and self oriented. They are single minded and highly ambitious and find every justification and rationalization for their actions while completely avoiding accountability for how those actions affect other people. They are cunning and conniving and extremely controlling. And deep down they're extremely insecure. These are incredibly nuanced and interdependent characteristics that take years to develop across a person's life and they are reinforced through their life experiences but they don't just manifest in a few months to a year just because of a couple of difficult experiences. They are typically nurtured by family of origin and childhood trauma and then get exacerbated as they get older out of a need for survival. By the time they mature into adulthood, the blueprint has already been set. So while I think as an audience member, changing the start of his charter could feel more satisfying as an arc, I think he is written perfectly to exemplify his real world counterparts. And Suzanne Collins has always tried to ground her world, her characters and her stories in the tragedy of our real world politics and societal issues.

As someone who read the book and saw the movie, I never understood the love for Sejanus. His moral ideas are right but even tho I get where he's coming from, his naivety and constant temper tantrums (espesially in the beginning) made him unbearable and annoying. Even tho we're ment to pick his side and root for him.
It gets a little better in Part 3 about the peacekeepers but only because Coriolanus is even worse (which in his case was the intended outcome).
Sejanus' death was undeserved but really felt like he asked for it.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED THE FOUR HOUR CUT. If you didn’t know they is a mythical 4 hr cut that was tested on audiences but was deemed too long. Lawrence also didn’t allow more kissing between Baird and Snow on screen because he worried audiences wouldn’t believe he’d turn if they did bc the chemistry was too big (booooooooo).
Also 13:00 it is explicit, “yknow my father bought him for me? To teach me I could never go back to 2”. I agree though that Coryo’s disdain for Sejanus should’ve been a bit more visible (even some micro lip curls from Blyth in Part 1 scenes would’ve been nice).
On 15:00, I think this is up to interpretation. I read the book as he’s really intrigued by her at first, from seeing her on the screen to the cage, but sticks with his own self preservation. As they bond he starts to catch feelings and it freaks him out (numerous times in the books he goes “shit why did I share that, AHH why am I blushing ?!”). By “start believing I can actually win” he’s actually half motivated by their connection. I think Blyth’s performance is EVERYTHING here. On rewatch you can see how he tried to hide some of his disdain for others but can’t help himself to connect.
Snow is an asshole in his head desperate for status, but I always got the vibe he was suppressing every good instinct until he kills them.

1:00:03 I love this because it's not true. Snows gladness that Lucy Gray is now dead and forgotten simply because the evidence of her existence is now gone is very funny because now she exists only in his memory. But also if we assume she continued to live and sing which is pretty fair because the Hanging Tree is well known in D12, it implies she moved on from Snow which I like to think haunts him in Mockingjay when Katniss makes the song basically the Rebellions Anthem.

very thorough review. I read both the book and watched the movie, yet there were some small differences you pointed out that I didn't catch. I think my favorite change was how they ended the hunger games. I really liked how they portrayed Reaper in the movie.
