The Op. 39 set of Études-Tableaux, written between 1916 and 1917 and published in 1917, was the last substantial composition written by Rachmaninoff in Russia. It shows a marked departure from his previous work. Rachmaninoff listened keenly to his contemporaries Scriabin and Sergei Prokofiev, and studied Scriabin's works to prepare a memorial recital in Scriabin's honor. Though he was roundly criticized for his overly-analytical approach in his playing and failure to capture Scriabin's style, the first seeds of composition had been planted.

I love this piece and it amazes me just how differently this sounds when played by the master himself. By other hands it most often sounds like a completely different piece to me. Quite remarkable and such an important document on how this man interpreted his own writings. If you do not have this Decca 1979 Rachmaninov playing Rachmaninov recording i strongly recommend it.

Simply, the greatest artist since Liszt.
When I hear this master play, it is not the notes I hear, but only the feeling, the mood.

It's refreshing hearing a pianist who is interested in expressing only the music itself. Most of today's pianists don't seem to realize that what the audience hears from them is not what they intended the audience to hear, but the intention itself, which, in most cases, totally degrades the music and reveals that the pianists don't really understand what they are playing.

I think this is the Decca 1978 recording on an Estonia concert grand with an Ampico system added. Rachmaninov made quite a few Ampico rolls in the 20’s the Etude Tableau in B min being one of them. Just an excellent performance and a real historical insight into Rachmaninov’s playing.

During WW2 servicemen were allowed to attend concerts for a token price. My dad saw Rachmaninoff's last public concert in Knoxville and talked about it often. I recently saw the program and was blown away, especially compared to modern programs: It included:
    English Suite A Minor (Bach)
    Les Papillons (Schuman)
    Sonata 2 - Chopin
B Min, A Min Etude Tableaux
    E Maj, E min Etudes - Chopin
Magic Fire, Spinning Song - Wagner
Un Sospiro, Dance of the Gnomes
    Two Liszt transcendental etudes
    Plus two unnamed encores
He performed despite the pain experienced from the cancer that took his life a month later. Knoxville dedicated a 12' statue ("The Last Concert") of him in 2003.

You mean E flat minor! I have not found his recording of this either. It is one of my favourites, too. He only recorded a selection of his short works, as far as I know. There is one by Horowitz. Probably one of the nearest you will find. But I don't really like it. Too exaggerated for my taste. Ashkenazy is very good at this composer, I think.

You're right, this is not Rachmaninoff's recording, an Ampico piano roll from 1928 in which, even after digitisation, the sound is more muffled than here. There are few dynamic contrasts and it ends at a much faster tempo than it begins. Rach's takes about 3'32" whereas this recording takes c. 10 seconds more than that.
