  • Hey everyone !
Based on so many questions about this topic I decided to pull this video forward ahead of other videos...
So in this video we will cover the Z9 buffer how that buffer works with XQD cards how it works with CFe cards and how it works when you change the Raw from Lossless compressed to high efficiency * and so on.
If you are interested in my photography then follow me on instagram nikonricci
As always thank you so much for watching
    Goodbye

How about wear and tear on the processor? Is it possible that the processor will slow over time? That’s the one thing I’m wondering, is while it’s great to think we won’t have to be concerned with shutter count anymore, but yet, everything about the camera is dependent on how well the processor performs. I’m sure that must have a lifespan or a rate of degradation.

@@paulrubino1399 I'm no engineer but I think solid state electronics last a long, long time. The thing to worry about is acute damage, not wear and tear over time. Then again, sensors do get gunk in the AA filter that can be hard to get out. That's happened to me.

Definitely, this all started because the very trusted DP Review, Chis Nichols only got 40 frames buffer in 14bit Lossless and there is no 12bit, so then Matt Granger said everyone was horse-shit liars, but he was testing the Lossy High Efficiency Plus mode, not 14bit Lossless RAW. Which just caused more confusion. Still with the fastest cards, you'd be lucky to get about a 4 second buffer, not bad, not great...but pretty decent for 20fps in 14bit Lossless! I get around 75 frames buffer on my D850 in 12bit Lossless RAW with a Sony CFexpress 128GB Tough series card. But that's at 9fps (actually 9.5-10fps with fully charged battery at 64 ISO) with the MB-D18 and EN-EL18c battery, so around a 7.5 seconds of buffer. Obviously the Z9 is getting more images in the buffer, at 20fps and 14bit Lossless. I never noticed any real difference at all between 12bit and 14bit Lossless, but I still wish the Z9 offered 12bit Lossless, just for the smaller file size, without any noticeable losses in IQ. Seems with the Z9 you have to shoot Lossy to get that big, endless buffer. Still the Z9 is awesome and maybe someday in firmware they will release 12bit Lossless as an option. No more sRAW or mRAW either, right?

@@patricksmith2553 In the Nikon panel discussions there was a comment that the compression software more efficient and that the file size for 14b not significantly larger than 12b files on previous versions. Ricci hopefully will give a better explanation.

Even in a highly active scene 80 frames means your moving subject is in a completely different position in the scene. That's 4 seconds of action. Shooting moving Cars, motorcycles etc. In sports the play you are shooting is already over (American Football most plays or downs. Basketball the action sequence of a player driving the lane that you just shot is now history. In Baseball the batters swing is long over and the ball is already in play on the field or in the catchers mitt. A tennis player has already returned the shot across the net) etc. The Z9 specs are just incredible. Getting rid of the mechanical shutter is fantastic. Wish I could get one. I'll just have to settle for my D850 for now.

Another great video. I've done some similar card testing on the Z6, Z7ii, and D850. My routine was to test for 35 seconds, and then to count the number of frames written in each full second using the EXIF data. What I found is all cards write at the frame rate for the first few seconds until the buffer fills. Once filled, the camera would shoot at the write speed of the card because the buffer needs to clear to allow space for an additional shot. Depending on the card, write speed with a full buffer was highly variable and could be quite slow.
In your test, it looks like the XQD card writes 13 frames in 1.5 seconds or around 9 fps, the Lexar CFExpress writes 41 frames in 3 seconds or around 13 fps, and the Delkin Black writes about 61 frames in 4 seconds or around 15 fps. That means the full buffer clears for the Delkin Black in 1.3 seconds. There are plenty of cards that are slower than the Lexar card. The ProGrade Gold was the slowest card I tested. Card size also makes a difference and smaller cards - especially 64 GB cards - are much slower.
One test I'd like to see is the write speed with a full buffer using lossless compressed. In testing the Z6 and Z7ii, I found the cards were exceptionally slow (less than 2 fps with the ProGrade Gold) when the buffer was full, and stayed at the slower speed until the buffer cleared fully.

Thank you so much for this methodically made video which clear all the doubts about the Z9 buffer issue.
    Now the following takeaways,
    1. Speed of the CF Express card is critical to get the best buffer performance
    2. Camera does not give 1000 frames in lossless compressed.
    3. Z9 give more than 1000 frames in High-efficiency Star with Delkin Black series CF Exp cards
    4. Need a bit of clarification on the image quality between Lossless compressed and High-Efficiency Star.
If there is a negligible quality difference between Lossless compressed and High-Efficiency Star, then no worries, I will go ahead and buy for wildlife work.

The way to go is by short bursts . Anyone who has been interested in fast action/ wildlife will know how quickly you can fill the card needlessly , I know I have done so with my D5 and that was at 24 mpxs let alone 45 at 20 fps! The important factor is how quickly the buffer will clear and evidently it will do so in under 1-2 seconds. I think Nikon has knocked it out of the park with the Z9 as it is BUT there’s another HUGE thing coming in the driveway in the form of computational photography for HDR. I see a Bright future ahead as Nikon has done away with the mechanical shutter and there should be room for developing the system more towards that respect.
Ricci also knocked it out of the park with your videos, not just for the z9 but each and every single one since day one, hands down the best channel for photography. Thank you for your efforts mate great stuff.

This is becoming so fanboyingly childish and tiring... Some people really need to find better things to do with their lives other than fueling tribal wars just for the sake of it!

Yes, I also think that a lot of the initial confusion stems from that first test video DPReview put out using any random card they had laying around. After that some people started to spread the idea that the capacity of a card should not even be an issue at all claiming that it’s all about an insufficiently sized buffer that’s causing premature choking. Now Ricci have put everything right again with this excellent video more or less confirming what the community of more intelligent commenters suspected was going on with this “issue”. Problem solved! The good thing about all this (unnecessary) confusion and noise is that now EVERYBODY knows that the name of the new king is Z9 and it’s made by Nikon.
For me, if I want to get relevant and correct information regarding everything Nikon I go to Ricci for that! No need for a second opinion even.

Loving these high quality detailed videos! Given how fast that buffer clears, I don't even think people who want lossless will have issues, because there's almost no situations where you hold your finger down for many seconds, its almost always bursts, even with wildlife action stuff.

Cheers Ricci. Your videos on the Z9 and 100-400 are the best on UA-cam. We’ve all seen the specs by now, but you go deep and show it all in real-time, no questions asked. Can’t wait to get the Z9 100-400 in my hands.

So, the best performance mainly depends on the Speed of CF EXPRESS.Which means the RAM inside Z9 is not so big indeed. Thanks a lot. A very useful test.

  • @pahafx
    @pahafx 2 роки тому +3

Thanks for this excellent test! Good to see that the buffer seem to clear extremely fast, ca. 1.5 seconds after hitting buffer limit with 81 lossless compressed raws :)

    • @jerryfaircloth
      @jerryfaircloth 2 роки тому +1

And doing the math on that it looks like the RAM buffer in camera is around 8GB. I no longer think I will have any issues at all with speed assuming the HE* RAW format is essentially perfect image quality. Nikon is finally killing it! And Ricci as usual doing the same!

Nikon users don't spray and prey! We'll leave that to the Canon-users! Whilst you can take 120 frames per second, I think this will be more of a specialist angle. I can't see using more than 20 FPS and then rarely. My main motivation for possibly getting this camera would be bird photography. The Z6ii I have at present is the fastest frame rate camera I have ever had and I may have had it on continuous low sometimes. If I had a better birder lens I might have tried Canon-style spray and prey, but I don't, so I have to steer away from bird photography until I can get a longer lens. I really hope the 3D tracking makes it down to the Z6ii... * Looks at Ricci * - he's defo not going to answer that one! Great stuff Ricci and thanks for all your content.

The test I’m dying to see is how the lossless raw of the Z9 compares the uncompressed raw of the Z7ii and even Z6ii in extreme dynamic range situations and low light, shadow recovery etc. Does the Z9 hold better than the Z7ii and Z6ii? If so Im selling both my Z6iis for a Z9. If the the Z6ii is still better in low light, which on paper it should be, I’ll have to keep one. If you could test that out, I’ll be eternally grateful. And Ricci, thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge. You are the best ressource for us Z shooters! It’s so appreciated! :)

Always great to have you bringing a clear un biased view of what Nikon is doing.
It is amazing to see that Nikon has basically designed the Z9 to have the data buss and processor be able to output at virtually unlimited speed. The only bottle neck is the medias write speed and capacity. WoW.
Thank you so so much for all your work and sharing.

Great video, in the US we have some "Pro Grade" branded cards that appear to be close to the Delkin, btw love to see how much fun people will have edited a few thousand pics as there's still the practical issue of not overwhelming the human part of the work flow too much with just spraying and praying.
