Edit: some figs will taste a bit like fig newtons. I don't know my variety but mine taste a bit like fig newtons - it's very sweet. I just tried another variety that I grew this year (turns purple when ripe) and was totally surprised when the inside was yellow. Took a bite and now I understand your comment about tasting like watermelon and cantaloupe, maybe honey dew for me. So very different!
Figs when they're really ripe do look disgusting. I have a fig tree and I picked them earlier last year and it didn't look gross. But this year they were bigger and ripe and I did get a bit grossed out.
Pick figs when they bend downward and feel squishy. The ones shown are green then ripen into a purplish color (probably a type of black fig). There are figs that will stay yellow/green even when they're ripe.
Personally I don't like figs when they are too ripe because 1. they're too sweet for my taste and 2. I like eating a thicker skin. The skin balances the taste and gives it some texture. I don't know if it's the skin but sometimes it'll taste a little nutty (could be that the fig isn't totally ripe).
This is the first time I've seen someone peel the skin which I thought was funny. It reminded me of an orange when you were peeling the skin off.
Common figs are self pollinating so probably no wasps in your figs. But enzymes in female figs would melt away the wasps anyway. If people are grossed out by that realize that many foods probably contain bits of insects like spaghetti sauce.

    • @BeatTheBush

There are some that are pollinated with wasps and some that are not. I'm not sure about the one I show on the video as I've never seen signs of wasps. In any case, there could be some wasp content in the fig but it has long been digested. Sorta like there is a minute amount of poo all over your clothes after a wash.

The type of figs pollinated by wasps are capria figs. The kind we usually eat in the US are common figs which are self fertile and don't need wasps. So relax, enjoy a fig, they're delicious and very healthy. Also, you can make a very healthful tea from their leaves, which can help stabilize blood sugar, as well.

California is an ideal location for growing any type of figs although most varieties can be grown anywhere if you protect them from temperatures below 20F (keep them in pots and put them in the garage in the winter).
