We eat a lot of figs in Turkey and I have never seen anyone peel it. I do not peel it, I eat it whole.
Great! They do say the internet pretty much has everything.
Turkish figs are the best. These ones kind of small compare the Turkish ones.
Portuguese Figs are the best ! Especially from the island of Madeira but the main land has amazing Figs as well
We eat them hole never peel it wtf lol 😂??
❤My husband is Lith too! He dosent know much about it yet, but we ARE exploring🤔 especially with our TASTE BUDS! Now that we are retired, eating is what we can finally relax & ENJOY! Instead of rushing thru it like we used too. I'm getting better @ scratch cooking the more I do it, like anything😃 Any hints you wanna share in pleasing MY *Lith Man?🤗 THANX!
Edit: some figs will taste a bit like fig newtons. I don't know my variety but mine taste a bit like fig newtons - it's very sweet. I just tried another variety that I grew this year (turns purple when ripe) and was totally surprised when the inside was yellow. Took a bite and now I understand your comment about tasting like watermelon and cantaloupe, maybe honey dew for me. So very different!
Figs when they're really ripe do look disgusting. I have a fig tree and I picked them earlier last year and it didn't look gross. But this year they were bigger and ripe and I did get a bit grossed out.
Pick figs when they bend downward and feel squishy. The ones shown are green then ripen into a purplish color (probably a type of black fig). There are figs that will stay yellow/green even when they're ripe.
Personally I don't like figs when they are too ripe because 1. they're too sweet for my taste and 2. I like eating a thicker skin. The skin balances the taste and gives it some texture. I don't know if it's the skin but sometimes it'll taste a little nutty (could be that the fig isn't totally ripe).
This is the first time I've seen someone peel the skin which I thought was funny. It reminded me of an orange when you were peeling the skin off.
Common figs are self pollinating so probably no wasps in your figs. But enzymes in female figs would melt away the wasps anyway. If people are grossed out by that realize that many foods probably contain bits of insects like spaghetti sauce.

John N - thank you ! Very informative and helpful. But what are Fig Newtons ?
ur video was worth watching....
I appreciate u answering all the comments
Only if you have a question but a comment without a question is also appreciated. =D
I've never seen a fig. good video
+Shawn w. (D.j. underground) Probably because it's so perishable, they do not usually sell them in supermarkets.
I'm glad you got it figured out
+Tin Nguyen Are you really glad?
Finally, fig 101. Fig is new to me, so your video is very informative and helpful. Most of the other sites ASSUME the viewer is familiar with figs.
The comments and your answers to them are also very helpful. THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!
You are welcome!
Aw man I so want to try some fig but they do look disgusting haha. Thanks for the vids sending ya support from 🇳🇿 New Zealand
Aren't they made out of wasps
There are some that are pollinated with wasps and some that are not. I'm not sure about the one I show on the video as I've never seen signs of wasps. In any case, there could be some wasp content in the fig but it has long been digested. Sorta like there is a minute amount of poo all over your clothes after a wash.
Gizl Alindayu ever seen a video Of the information from what the fig is created
Gizl Alindayu that are so look it up on UA-cam 😷
Gizl Alindayu most of them but the ones in the supermarket are most likely not
Ive never seen a fig in real life and less so in a video. Now I know what to look for! Thank you!
you can also eat the fig whole, skin included. It's not tough skin. It's very soft, tender and adds good texture.
Indeed you can but I don't like it.
Fig Newtons use a paste made from dehydrated figs, if you buy whole dried figs and eat them it will taste the same as a fig newton.
I figure it's dehydrated AND with other preservatives added. The fig newton of course will have the pastry wrapping.
Apparently, the place where i live has a WILD fig tree. They aren't like this though, they're all green every single one, no purple. -Tried it and still tastes good, sweet at first then watery.
Figs vary in color - some are yellowish and green (I think they call these white figs) instead of turning purple/brown. You can tell when it's ripe when it starts bending downward at the stem.
@@jngx80 I know
You should really upload this to reddit, more views, I'm sure they'd love it.
+Jacob G Apparently, I don't have enough Karma points to post. haha.
Even though figs are amazing, pretty messed up how wasps get stuck inside the figs...
Its as bizarre as pigs turning into trees (Speaker for the Dead)
pretty crazy! however if you buy them from a store, you're very likely not eating any wasps xD
Just Some Summer How do you know? The determining factor is the species and wasps are most are required for figs to reproduce.
Well, if you watch the fig video from gross science that will tell you why! :D
Just Some Summer WIll do. Please link!
Do they grow in hawaii?
It appears figs grow in hardiness zones 8-10 which exists in the central part of Maui or Hawaii main island. So yes, but in cooler areas than near the coast.
BeatTheBush Thanks!
And Arby's taste nothing like roast beef....it's still good though!😂
Figs are the best!! You are also the best!
You should definitely eat the skin what are you doing thats gross.
+Nat V Wow, thanks for your compliment and un-compliment! haha. Its great you can have the skin but its skin irritant to many as well as myself.
wanna know whats moving in the fig, also the white part? ITS WASP LARVA AND DEAD WASP PARTS!!!!I THREW UP ONCE I SAW A VIDEO ABOUT IT!!😷😷😷😖😖
Usually it dies off and gets digested by the fig. If you open one that is not yet ripe, you might have wasps in there.
Eating FIG Fruit with Wasps Larvae😳😳😳😳😳
FIG with free Eggs😂😂😂😂😂😂
#Neveragain #EggsofWasps
Rub them against each other after you cut them in half. They will get juicier and sweeter. I eat them whole.
After you cut? Then the juice will leak. Do it like lemons? But then I prefer it to not leak when I'm eating them.
Figs are one of the most unappetizing looking raw foods I've Seen, I truly don't understand why a person would see a fig and think "man that looks tasty" especially knowing their life cycle and how they're pollinated/created.
Gross all around.
@The Truth these people think chicken comes from a magical fairy that drops em in supermarkets, lmao like they are so ignorant to everything, all food comes from nature and it is bound to have insects, microbes etc, you have microbes in your god damn intestine... Millions, on your skin, bitch ass snowflakes...
FIGS HAVE DEAAADDD WASP IN THEM
Yes. Although highly digested so it wont be crunchy or anything.
What kind of degenerate peels a fig? Just eat the damn thing.
Naw, I don't like it. Having one single view and denouncing anything different is degenerate.
Haha, BeatTheBush - I absolutely agree with you !! I hope we recall the well-known axiom / proverb : "One man's meat is another man's poison".
(I have read the other helpful comments that tells us some love the skin but others' throats get irritated by it.)
Found it in the supermarket once, tried it absolutely loved it! Haven't been able to find it since. Lucky you for having it in your yard.
+Betty9971 Just have to find a small fig plant and like 6 years later... BOOM! Figs! Lol.
Omg he responded to everyone.....will I get noticed by sensei BeatTheBush?
Lol, not too big a deal. You see, I live on the internet. ^_^
just at a fresh fig from my tree, I think the crunchy bottom taste alot like fig newton. The leaves give me an itchy rash. Don't wipe your butt with it!!
The type of figs pollinated by wasps are capria figs. The kind we usually eat in the US are common figs which are self fertile and don't need wasps. So relax, enjoy a fig, they're delicious and very healthy. Also, you can make a very healthful tea from their leaves, which can help stabilize blood sugar, as well.
Nice! I really wonder if the ones I showed are wasp pollinated or not. I cannot find any sign of them.
OMG don't peel the fig man eat the skin!! lol Its so delicious! Do you know by chance what type of fig that is because they're huge! I would love to know so i can get that type of tree myself haha thanks!
+waldron024 all based on personal preference right? it's a mission fig but somewhat of a monster fig tree since the figs are often the size of oranges. lol
HAHA you're totally right.! Yeah they're huge man did you grow them? If you did I will buy some cuttings for sure !!
+waldron024 Yep, I grew them. I tried giving cuttings away but then they didn't work out for the receiver. I really don't know what the secret is, just water it and tend the tree I guess.
These are called mission figs, i was about to eat mine but when i opened it, it was green so i threw them both away.
Been buying/eating dried figs for years. First thing I thought when I had one is "Oh, so this is where fig newtons get their texture and flavor", so I disagree
When dried, they taste exactly like fig newton's because that's what's in them.
They do... except I guess fig newtons is more ground up?
❤Just made a big batch! However👀*Instead of all that sugar & corn syrup in the newton recipe, ('how its made' ch video) I use dried figs, dates & Port or Marsala wine. Wrapped in shortbread! Thats all!😚 Tastes the same (better?🤔) BUT, my body recognizes it as food!😉 Good health to you!😁
I wish I had listened to this video before the pandemic .. the leafs can be use as toilet paper 😹😹😹
Also if you find leaves of three, they make great TP as well
WASP EATING GROUP 😷😭 WHERE YALL AT
I'm okay with that. I ate insects before but they are not good by themselves. The fig tastes like a fruit and not an insect.
BeatTheBush but that's nasty eating dead wasp and new ones in it to because the pregnant mother goes it then she does what she gotta do then she is dead then the males are born and make there sisters pregnant then the males make tunnels in the fruit for the new mothers then it goes from there and ik it's LONG but it's NAsTy😷
Verneisha Sisco you eat tons of bugs throughout your life without knowing. it’s safe to say that figs that happen to contain wasps will still b as good as ones without. it may be nasty but it’s a simple price to pay for a delicious fruit.
jordyn xx I actually didn't never did
Verneisha Sisco doubtful
Very interesting!
+ohio67 And gross looking right? =P
yes, but I still want to try it lol
did you taste dead wasp
Nope. The dead wasps, if any, are long digested and integrated into the fruit. So it tastes like a fruit and there are not traces of insect texture or taste.
There’s bugs in every fruit if you’re so worried about it don’t eat them simple
Fig Wasps
would you say it tastes better than a mulberry?
I never had mulberry fresh I don't think.
I didn't up until 2 weeks ago that wasps breed inside figs.
If it's true that these last only 1 day out of the fridge does that mean the "fresh" ones at my local Publix are radiated or such to last longer on the shelf? :(
These actually last about 1-2 weeks. Best before 1 week.
A fight is a flower not a fruit
Taste is like which fruit?
Is this the same thing English figgy pudding is made with? Merry Christmas!
figgy pudding I assume is made out of figs. =D
There are hundreds of different varieties of figs. Some taste more like honey or caramel and some taste more like berries or fruit. California is an ideal location for growing any type of figs although most varieties can be grown anywhere if you protect them from temperatures below 20F (keep them in pots and put them in the garage in the winter).
Mine is way too big to put in a pot. It's about 2 stories tall! Unfortunately, since this video, the tree is too old and doesn't grow figs anymore.
@@BeatTheBush Figs are produced on each years new wood. Are there figs growing 30ft up?
the skin is legit this method is unnatural
Lol... I just don't like it.
ugggh lookz like a grip ah bugz
It's super delicious and sweet!
