Everyone keeps saying they hear Art Blakey but if you dig around a bit, Art Blakey got a drumming lesson from Chick Webb himself once and he described it in full, pretty damn cool
It is a great tragedy that no only is there very little film footage of Chick Webb (literally a few seconds) but also the audio recordings the band made are not of the best quality, either. Consequently Web’s legacy is mostly based on what other musicians say about him - which is always very complementary - but I wish we had more to see and hear for ourselves.
In an interview, Benny Goodman said he played songs with lyrics at the tempo a singer would sing it. "Stompin' at the Savoy" was one of those tunes, although I like the faster tempo better.
Benny's band played excellently but they were too conservative. Webb let his band loose. Remember too, that Benny Goodman was not a racist. So it wasn't about showing up Chick. When Goodman had Billie Holiday singing with him he refused to let his band stay at the hotel that refused to room Billie. As for Gene Krupa, he was up against a seasoned pro of a drummer, and not just an average band drummer. Hell, Chick led his band. Goodman knew what he was going up against...he knew Chick's band wasn't second rate. Just great musical times.
You should watch the Jazz series by Ken Burns. She tells an amazing story of being a girl whisked into the ballroom and her excitement to this day is just so fun
@Robert fray I see you're a special kind of stupid living in a fantasy world. Apparently you also never been to college. Black Jazz musicians created everything and were the greatest musicians. Have fun in fantasy land
Chick was and still is the king of percussion.
❤ Yes, one of the BEST EVER. Even Gene Krupa new that....and Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson and .....many more❤

What a shame that night wasn’t recorded.
I played on one of Chick Webb's driumsets. "Chick Webb cut me to ribbons." -- Gene Krupa.

Benny was absolutely sensational, but even be couldn't beat the 🐐.
It's not predjiduce to say that, that's the beauty of music, the better band is the better band, no matter what color.
IMHO,Chick was the greatest drummer that ever lived.
That was a quote from Buddy Rich! I can post the interview for those that doubt.
