Another suggestion is that you placed the right hand handle the wrong way. If you assemble the cords the other way, the handle will go the right direction.
the trick with the rope and the rubber band is pretty smart, ngl. did you come up with the idea yourself or is it like this in the ones we can find in stores ?

This looks fun, I used to build marble labyrinths out of cardboard as a kid, I remember making contraptions such as 1-way doors...
