The contention with the Royals v Mariners throw by Bo Jackson was that of how the umpires were supposed to rotate to ensure they had all the calls covered.
There are 4 umpires for regular season games (more in the playoffs). The ball was hit to left field, so the third base umpire runs out into left field to monitor the catch or here, since the ball was already on the ground, to monitor in case the ball bounces up into the stands or gets caught between the padding and the wall or anything weird like that. Therefore, the home plate ump moves to third since it is likely that a play might happen with the runner at third on the throw from the outfield. Since THAT leaves home plate uncovered by an umpire, the first base ump is supposed to move to home in case there is a play at the plate. In this case, the first base ump failed to do that, apparently, so the home plate ump had to turn around and make the call from nearly at third base (90 feet away - not optimal). That is what Mariners manager Jim Lefebvre (le-fever) was arguing about - that the umps were out of position and couldn't make a good call. This was in the day before video replay, mind. He was out by two steps anyway.
Keep in mind that this was Harold Reynolds running from first. He was one of the fastest players in MLB at the time. He had gotten a jump and was attempting to steal second on what looks like a hit and run, so he was well toward second when the ball was hit. www.mlb.com/video/harold-on-bo-jackson
Bo Jackson was a beast. In two sports. Professionally at the highest level. Simultaneously - baseball in the Summer and NFL with the Raiders in the Winter.

Not sure if you'll see this 2 weeks from post but you should check out Rick Ankiel's story. The reason he swiched positions is because he lost all control of his pitches. His pitches were so wild that the catcher couldn't catch them. Now he's making perfect throws from the outfield. Great vids keep up the good work

Yeah I've kind of pieced that together from the clips of him that I've seen. He threw out 2 guys from deep, in one game.

I knew this mans name would come up at some point. The fact I've heard him referenced in sooo many movies says he must've been one of the greats! I'll put him on the list.

@@reachmeorteachme Bo Jackson is the only player to play in the NFL Pro Bowl and the MLB Allstar. He would play the full season in baseball and then without taking any time off he would play football. I don't remember what the heading of video was but it should be the one that shows him playing both sports. Although the timing is done differently now than it was when he went to the combine, he has the fastest recorded time of any player at any position. He wasn't a small guy at 6' 1" and 230 pounds.
