About the speaker: Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P. (Thomistic Institute) from Pennsylvania, graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville. However, it should be remembered that during World War II, some of the countries occupied by Germany had their legitimate governments in exile, which continued to wage war sometimes with large armed forces. Therefore, it seems to me that the citizens of these countries had the right to deceive the enemy with whom their legitimate government was still fighting. There are no dilemma in whether or not to protect people from dying when it comes to the pandemic. At the time, everyone was vulnerable. It is likened to walking off a cliff and trusting God will save you…or if you die, you die in faith. Wouldn’t it be a sin, as well, if you were not sure you were sick and go to Church anyways but end up infecting others?
In the example of the Gestapo officer, couldn't it be a case of conflicting duties? I understand that there's an implicit moral obligation to protect one's guests, like Lot in Sodom...
I never quite understood the example, because wouldn't the Gestapo officer order a house search regardless? But it occurred to me that there could also be a case where the house owner senses the possibility of a "lukewarm" officer. Only an officer less than willing to do his job would ask if they are hiding Jews, and be fishing for an easy way out, to save face vis a vis his subordinates...
In such a situation, wouldn't the moral obligation to protect his guests trump the moral obligation to tell the truth? Wouldn't the old Jesuit trick of "mental reservation" be a way out even of venial sin in this situation? On the contrary, I believe that the obfuscation of the truth in this case would be a virtuous deed, like Herod wouldn't have been only not failing to keep his word, but rather saving a life, if he had refused to grant Salome's wish.
@b-a-boon it's a case when you must choose the lesser evil out of two, or a conflict of moral obligations, like the case of Herod confronted with a choice between the moral obligation of honoring your oath or the moral obligation of not killing John the Baptist. In the Gestapo officer case, there is an obligation to tell the truth that conflicts with the obligation of honoring the implicit promise of not doing anything that harms the guests.
Well, and Augustine did not have a good intuition when it came to the Immaculate Conception
