You're immortalised in the positive influence you've had not only on a generation of people but also your industry changing critique that has protected the consumer for many years. You're a real legend mate, i sorely miss you.
I had favorited this video 6 years ago when it debuted and just now rewatched it. I miss this man so much. Nothing was better than first impression videos when new games released where the first 10mins were about the options menu :D. Such a legend. Thanks for changing my life TB. Rest well.

Early on, TB was more approachable to lootboxes and didn't immediately denounce them. He engaged with people like Jim Sterling in calm debate, which Sterling reciprocated. However as it became as bad as Sterling predicted, TB changed his mind, as is seen in this video. TB was always constructive and careful with his criticism, and was willing to change positions as facts surfaced to him. This is the sign of a good critic. I don't think anyone has filled the void of TB today. But I hope that more people emulate him. As much as I like Sterling and people like him, many are very overt and toxic in their rhetoric. This is legitimate in the face of a toxic industry, but we need the patient voices too. Thank you TB for being what you are, for taking your time even if you were wrong sometimes. You were as rigorous and as objective as possible. And you changed your mind when proven wrong. Like how you measured War for the Overworld before and after release, saying the release wasn't good enough after explicitly endorsing the beta. (War for the Overworld, by the way, has since been fixed and is a great game today.) We should all aspire to be more like you.
Y'know, I've been seeing this video in my recommendations over the past few days or say and I've gotta say, the gaming industry got much much worse after TB died. I miss him and we need him. RIP TB.
I'm sad to say, that with games like lost ark, BDO, Genshin Impact and now Diablo Immortal we have lost the fight. Wish you were still here to fight back with us
I still believe that the spirit of TB remained and haunted WB until they gave in and removed microtransactions in shadow of war. Thank you for doing this video and all your content, TB, you're sorely missed.
So, im doing research about monetization schemes in videogames. As much as it would be easy to do paper on loot boxes at the time of commenting the loot box debate has kind of come to a hault as there were legal ramifications in spots around the world and we've moved from loot boxes to battle passes. I'm curious if TB ever talked about battlepasses but i can't find anything or remember them talking about it.
Wow I haven't seen this in a long time. Thanks algorithm for reminding me of when there were pro consumer games journailsts. And now im sad because I miss TB...
“In order to make it fair, you literally have to make it pointless.” That line just encapsulates everything wrong with the idea of game-altering multiplayer DLC. This is why I feel that the older formulas had it right and the modern age is just trying to fix what wasn’t broken. Upgrades, if they exist at all, are earned through skilled and/or tenured gameplay. Players choose certain upgrades that suit their style and ignore the ones that don’t. Matchmaking can be separated between balanced and open depending on whether players want to always compete against others of the same skill level or if they want to roll the dice on facing people who may be significantly better or worse than them. The result is that skilled/tenured players enjoy perceivable rewards for their actions while still granting new players the option to compete on equal standing until they’re confident enough to go into open matchmaking. You can even go the extra mile and allow exceptionally skilled players to challenge themselves by competing without upgrades against players that have them (i.e. the MW2 prestige system). The paid DLC model really should focus more on single-player enhancement and restrict multiplayer content to cosmetics.
I like being able to gauge my skill level with my opponents, many people do, this is what competition is. This system in Battlefront just means in not having fun because I don't ever really know how good my opponent is. The lines are all blurred, so I'll just go play something that is more, TRANSPARENT.
to think that we finally got rid of lootboxes, and now some CoD players want them back. Truly sad, considering how awful they were. Lootboxes need to stay a bad memory.
Watching this now after watching the UK EA lootbox hearing, fingers crossed governments won't be fooled and step in to prevent more predatory businesses extorting money out of players
When in game pay to win / loot boxes / microtransactions / battle passes / season passes / character skins cost IRL money (instead of purchasing them with the in game currency you earn) it is definitely a form of gambling!
Wow. This video was quite informative and those facts about the dopamine levels... Damn... Makes you wonder in what world you live in where everyone thinks he can exploit something to gaslight you into doing something. Damn.
I've been playing a F2P mobile game for awhile now, while I didn't spend any real money, even using free currency and not getting what I want, is frustrating. May the Goddess watch over his soul.
Lot of companies are going downhill, as 2k games player I can safely say that hunger for money and lack of effort are making me not wanna play basketball games ever again. His words are still true for this year.

Just had an epiphany after the "rich man's playground' comment from TB. Imagine, in the not too distant future, developers only caring about how they can cater to they're whales (millionaire/billionaire clients) by developing games that allow them to shit on they're opponents (everyone else) through excessive loot-box purchases...oh wait, we're already here... time to go and start that aquaponics veggie garden I've been designing.
Not all loot boxes are an issue. Cosmetic loot boxes that can be bought using in game currency earned by playing the game are fine. The big problem with loot boxes are the pay to win loot boxes that directly effect progression in game by people paying to get an advantage over other players. Overwatch didn't popularize loot boxes. Loot boxes have been in games as far back as 2009. EA were the ones to popularize it and make it the thing it is today. They started the whole thing with fifa ultimate team years ago and it grew into something like an 800 million dollars a year practice that other developers have tried to do aswell.
random lootboxes that can be bought by money IS a problem .. it´s like playing slots (and yes there is the risk of addiction which you should not underestimate) .. you put money in at the risk of getting shit out of it and then some people are tempted to try again ... and again .. .. .. if it´s cosmetics then just let the person buy it directly, why would i have to pay money for the chance of getting a good looking skin? ... only to be milked of cash .. to me getting lootboxes by playing the game realy is the only acceptable way at this point .. the best way is to just get a damn ingame currency and to have that be spent at your own lesure ..
@@MrTBSC I know dude. Paying real money for loot boxes whether its cosmetics or for in game advantage is a shit practice and I never buy in game purchase with real money. But if its a game that gives you in game currency just for playing like gold or what ever that can be used to buy loot boxes is fine by me. I just don't agree with anyone having to spend real money to advance in a game they already own. Buying a game should give you access to everything that game has to offer. That's why I never buy anything with EA or Activision's name on it because pretty Mich everything they release is a cash grab rip off.
I love star wars but untill it sits with EA i won't buy it, would like to try Assassin's Creed but still Ubisoft is going up this road so I'll pass!! Please Bethesda don't go to hell aswell :3
