Bédard wurde in Québec City (Canada) geboren, studierte am Conservatoire de Musique de Québec sowie in Paris, Montréal und Amsterdam. Nach einer mehrjährigen Organisten- und Lehrtätigkeit in Québec wirkt Bédard heute als Organist an der Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver (Canada) und als Orgel-Professor an der dortigen University of British Columbia. Seine zahlreichen Orgelkompositionen sind immer tonal und melodisch, und sie sind harmonisch oft der französischen Spätromantik verbunden.
„Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland“ ist ein Adventslied Martin Luthers (1483-1546), dem der altkirchliche Hymnus „Veni redemptor gentium“ des Ambrosius von Mailand (339-397) zugrunde liegt. Die heute gesungene Melodie geht jedoch auf eine Handschrift des Benediktinerklosters Einsiedeln aus dem Jahr 1120 zurück, die möglicherweise aus der musikalischen Blütezeit des Klosters St. Gallen um 900 stammt und im ersten Kirchenton (dorisch) steht.

Bédard, organist and composer at the forefront of contemporary Canadian church music, studied at Québec Conservatory and with André Isoir (Paris) and Gustav Leonhardt (Amsterdam) and served as organist at different churches in Québec. In 2002, he was appointed Principal Organist at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver (Canada) and Professor for organ at the local University of British Columbia. His compositions, essentially tonal and melodic, are characterized by a concern for formal clarity and immediate communication with as vast a public as possible.
"Now come, Saviour of the gentiles" is an Advent hymn by Martin Luther (1483-1546) based on the ancient church hymn "Veni redemptor gentium" by Ambrosius of Milan (339-397). The melody sung today, however, goes back to a handwriting of the Benedictine monastery Einsiedeln from the year 1120, which possibly originates from the musical heyday of the monastery St. Gallen around 900 and is composed in the first church tone (Doric).
