- What started off as a ratty 1900 Kellerman Clown toy, ended up... slightly better. I clean up this old toy, but will likely give it a second go around in the future...
I love these early turn of the century toys. I think it came out fine Alex. Good job for saving it.
Thanks for saving something that would have been thrown away. Good job with the face.
As the comments come in, it's good to remember this bit of wisdom:
It isn't the artist's job to make sure that everyone gets it.
I remember seeing that toy in an antique guide some 50 years ago when I was in the business. It was rare then, but not unheard of. Must have been popular back when it was new.
I like that you paid attention to the original colors and used those. It's nice to see an antique item look the way it did when it was shiny and new. Gives you an idea of how designs and tastes have changed over the years.
You did a great job! It’s a clown and looks so much better with paint. I saw it still has the key as well. How exciting. I spent a few decades restoring old toys that I would most often sell, and of course condition affects the value but bringing an old cherished toy back to life is so much more satisfying, if you just love having it around, as I would.
I think the paint job looks good. I enjoy these types of videos!
I loved watching this. Thanks for letting us see the repair process. Well done, it looks very nice. It would be fun to see it moving.
Nice job ! Your too hard on yourself ! Looks much better and it's rescued !!
It's looks good. I enjoy watching you repair and fix stuff
love seeing you going Through all the things looking for the treasures I used to do something like you with buy and sell
Whoa, that is quite an old toy, and we did quite a good job restoring and repainting the paint from that time didn’t always last very long, but it came out very well. Did a good job Alex.❤❤❤
I love it! Very whimsical
Hi Alex it looks way better then what it was. Good job
Well I enjoy clowning around with you today
👍🤡👍
That is incredible! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it😊
Happy you decided to share.
I can think of a dozen reasons why it was good you did.
I think you forgot to mention that because of the age and the paint flaking off there was also a health reason for taking old paint off even though there wasn't much of it left.
You should get an inexpensive air brush and mess around with it.
Keep up the good work
It would be cool to see it working and moving! My daughter collects clowns but we've never come across a piece like this!
Alex, you should get another can of ivory paint and dot some of that on, over the blue to calm it down. You can achieve the airbrush effect by going back and forth with those colors, until you’re happy. I think you did fine and if all else fails, get yourself a little airbrush painter and give it a try. The portable one’s are affordable and do a great job for what you need it for. Thanks for sharing with us. ✌🏻🤍🤞
Alex, I'm 64 now wish I knew who got that toy from my Oma's house. I remember playing with it as a child wind him up watch him go
He looks great!
Cool clown on a tricycle! Hearing you say airbrush for the dots made me curious to see when they were invented so I went to google...
The air brush was known first as an “atomizer” and was patented in 1876 by Francis Edgar Stanley (1849-1918), a photographer, inventor, portrait painter, and businessman.
Cool stuff Alex👍👍
You need to watch restoration videos!
Not bad Alex! You had better luck with the Testors paint than I have had trying to do old Matchbox cars. Well done!
You did a very nice job of preservation on this clown. He can safely sit on the shelf for the foreseeable future. Full restoration may happen later. 🤔
It’s clean and not flaking everywhere you did a great restoration job ❤
Another technique for the blue is to take a piece of sponge and dab the color on. :)
You sure are a Jack of all trades! My late husband was as well. You did a great job of bringing this toy back to life! 😍🤡💙
You did a great job of the clown considering how far the paintwork had deteriorated ❤️💚🙏🏻🇬🇧
Cool restoration…but I was hoping you would wind it up and let it go! Or maybe he doesn’t work?
Very nice job Alex 👍
I know it is too late now, but I'm sure on The Repair Shop (UK) they have saved to original paint by some method. That is without taking it all off, even if flaking. But you did a wonderful job, well done.
I've used a toothpick for a fine line brush. It works.
I like the blue dots!
I can’t believe how good you are at fixing toys.
I love these videos! You know you could turn those blue dots into little stars actually!
Good job Alex!
Dab the blue spots with a sponge rather than a brush.
Good job, Alex.
Alex. If memories serve, I think saw the same clown on the Antiques Road Show BBC.
Wow! That’s really great.
Thanks for sharing this😄
I'd like to see it operate!
I'm wondering if it might help if you have a 2nd complimentary shade of blue either darker or lighter, to dab in with the spots you have there already. Maybe even a very dry brush black/silver to give it some depth or a bit of an aged look?
Try using a pencil eraser dipped in the blue paint. Dob it on. Will be more controlled and easier and come off as a cleaner refined look. I understand you were trying to replicate the piece's original look, sometimes there is a better way. Just a thought.
It came out fine, good work
I found similar looking clowns listed on Ebay with the name Kellermann or Gunthermann
Clown looks very good
Paint a clown while wearing a mime tshirt!
Alex, I’m so mad I searched and got a picture of that clown up the first search I did and when I went to take a screenshot of it. I lost the picture and now I can’t find it again. I’m so mad.
I like to see you restore things.
My ex used to use a toothpick to do fine painting work.
good effort!
id go ahead and paint the body blue with white polka dots. Then id do the gloves and neck ruffle in a complimentary color. Make it attractive to you, and you can be sure you'll have many fans
It was a nice try, Alex. It will redone to your specs as the piece will ask you for help every time you look at it. Once you decide to repop the value becomes more negotiable anyway so you should feel happy when you look at it. Do you think that the front wheel could use a tire or a weak round black rubber band?
Fie future prjects you can cut out tge bristles if you oaint brush to use for smalker areas.
Nice
I like your UFO TV series toys!
You should have :dry-brushed: the red and blue paint.
If my vote counts I'm all for a do over on the paint job.
The spinning wheel of death 😅
most importantly, it no longer sheds.
but are we sure that front wheel dies not have sword spokes, and the clown has tried to use his fingertips to stop?
I think it needs color on the ruffle at the neckline and waist.
Nice toy❤ 🤡
Alex my darling. I think maybe you should paint a clown suit of your own design. It looks like it is not completed. Well honey, until next time. Please, take care and stay safe. I love you 🍺🌈👍😇🇺🇸🕊🌹❤️🙏🌞
Maybe he could be German Guntherman Clown
Hey Alex, my wife and I watch your videos quite frequently. We always notice that when you are going through a box or tote of things, you sometimes have a bit of a hassle opening things. My wife asked me "Why do you suppose he doesn't have the camera mounted to this head like on a strap or something to keep his hands free?" I told her I don't know. I'll send a message on one of his videos.
He has said before that he prefers to hold the camera so he can zoom in to look at details, names etc, which he can't do with a head mount or tripod plus not being sure whether he is focussing properly.
It was OK until you put the red and blue paint on 😁
Let your son repaint it.
*use crumpled tissue/news paper dipped in paint to do blue splotches*
Should of let Stephen have a go at it
Alexander, That’s more than likely lead paint. Hope you wore a mask.
😊
I understand not finding pictures and information on turn of the century toys. I have my grandfather’s wooden large beaded giraffe. And a wheeled rocket with wooden bead clown riding it.
I enjoyed your video and the efforts to restore the German toy. However since you DID paint it, the attempt to put patina, failed miserably. I was hoping you’d just paint it complete
Clear coat it several coats????
Could this be lead paint because of age?
I like it 🩷
You forgot his nose
Definitely not a teal blue… 🤷🏻♀️
I think I first!
dont paint if you want to sell to a Collector
I think it looks good; nearly what it would have looked like in its original state. Which is what you wanted to achieve.🤡🤡
Great video
I think your better at painting tin toy clowns.
